I refuse to buy from sellers that gouge on shipping

same here... instant deal-killer in my book, but they always have lots of "reasons" for it, which are sometimes hilarious.

FTR: neither of the two gigantic boxes that I shipped out for the "Secret Santa" thing - one went to d42jeep, one to Don Long - cost that much to ship, and they were both oversize packages (that go at a higher rate.)

I know what you sent to d42, and there is no size comparison between that and a wrench roll.

I am not sure if I'm allowed to ask this here, but I would trade this for about anything Blue Grass Belknap?

Finally got all my plomb hand tool finds from last weekend cleaned up. Still need to clean up the clamshell boxes but the hand tools are all done. Some were pretty rough but everything is cleaned and rust free. Some of these are for my collection and some will be available( I'm keeping some of the pebbles . If you see something that interests you, let me know).

Top down
-phillips # 4
-various dbe's including a nice offset 15/16-1" that I needed to finish my offset wrench set!
-various pebbles and some shorty dbes
-various doe's including some nice pebbles from another member
- 2 wf extensions
-12" adjustable-plomballoy
- #247 pliers
-various combos including a war finish and a dual mark 1/2 combo from another member

Sockets-
-1/4 drive deep chrome

-various 3/8 drive
-wobble sockets- civilian and wf
-Phillips#4-3/8 drive socket

1/2 drive-
- 3 of the 32nds series sockets ! 19, 21, 25
-various finish sockets...almost a complete run from 7/16 to 1-1/4. I did find 2 dual mark 3/4 sockets at the scrapper booth
-1/2 stud puller with wedges
- 9/16 low clearance socket
-1/2 wobble and 8 pt socket

1"- big 1-1/8 impact socket

All in all I think it was a good haul :) . About 50% of this came from 1 booth that was the scrapper.

A partial 1/4” drive set arrived from an eBay seller yesterday. F8DB8B79-1B44-4C5D-B352-1637C47073E3.jpeg
I added these dykes to my Plomb based GMTK as well, replacing a rusty, plain handled pair.

I bought the partial 1/4” drive set because it had the pieces I need to make a complete set. Here are some pictures of the results. 3DB89163-308F-480A-B564-6D58224972BF.jpeg9783DEAC-CAC4-418D-95F2-595C1ABFBA79.jpegC2D1F9C3-9808-453F-B2E1-8552BED3BC92.jpeg
I added it to the Plomb tower. There isn’t much room left for any more sets. AF5DC59E-0EB0-46A9-9410-E1A18EDC649F.jpeg3BB2DDAE-CFA2-48FA-91CB-0B1D49A129FA.jpeg

Thank you. I chipped that hard old paint off with a razor blade and then used a fine wire wheel on a grinder to take the last of it off of the shank. The handle had crumbling 'skin', so I wet sanded that, followed by a little 3M rubbing compound. I'm not usually that aggressive, but that paint was very hard (and very ugly). I did a little bit of the sanding with the shank stuck in the drill press chuck.

These are all marked PLVMB on the handles, except for the #3 (9686), which is marked on the shank. Is that an early/late difference?

Here's a (crappy) shot of (most of) the rest of the family.

1681828911170.jpeg

I'm also wondering if the lack of a (painted) groove around the handle indicates early/late. The two up top don't have the groove. EDIT-- those two are marked <P&C>, not PLVMB.

That stubby Phillips is #9671.

I think this was the latest handle iteration.

All of the Phillips tips are in fairly good shape, except for the big 9688. Someone butchered that one.

Thanks for the tip on the restoration process. I will try that some time. In terms of your question about age....you are correct. The phillips you pictured is the latest Plomb but they also made that handle style in proto as well. I call it a 1st gen bet'r grip.

One of the most interesting re-applications of a branding in the vintage hand tools world, as I've noted before. The term went from describing the square throat of the fixed and dynamic steel jaws on J.P. Danielson's adjustable wrenches in the 30's and early 40's to describing the fluted shape of CAB handles on Plomb screwdrivers, which J.P. Danielson never made, in the late 40's and 50's. Quite a lift-and-shift.

@d42jeep Would you be willing to trade or sell this one? I’ve been wanting a pebble finish 1/4, but the seem tricky to find for a reasonable price.3DD58459-5E56-4961-A2C7-216088988744.jpeg

Plomb never lifted when they shifted and they hit a big wall in 1948 😉😂

Besides the 8 point sockets, it looks like I need a stepped 3/8” socket, two 5/16” sockets, one 9/32” socket, and maybe some 7/32” sockets. I would rather not have chrome plated sockets since these are green box sets.

Pulled this motley assortment of WF- orphans out of the same USAAF type II toolbox at the flea this morning. Found the ratchet frame first. Had to dig for the rest. Uni and swivels are 3/8-drive, socket, extension, and ratchet are 9/32-drive. All extras, but I would never leave them behind. Good flip/trade material. The WF-8 in my keeper set has the oval face, not the figure-8, but the guts are the same. I may have to hit up @RagTopTA for the twin pawls and a machine screw out of his wood box ratchet spares and repair kit! :)

Is that cad plate, or did someone bead blast the ratchet/parts?
All the face plates on all the WF- ratchets I have ever had, even the no-namers, are like that. More like a satin vs plain steel finish. I won't postulate how they arrived at that finish, and I'm not going to scratch one up to find out, but I don't think it's cad. Or I should say, I never considered it cad until you asked - and as you know, I have lots of cad plated tools. I suppose it's possible, although I am skeptical of them cad-plating just the face plates. The frame, drive wheel and pawls inside are plain steel. Whatever it is, it results in an attractive two-tone appearance that these probably don't get enough credit for. Here is a current stable.

There's a specific time period for the pebbled field in the wing, before and after are smooth stamped with on I'm pretty sure. I don't have enough pullers to have tried to figure out what those dates are.

I found a Plvmb 4515 the other day... missing the wedges and pin, of course. Luckily, the Proto LA 4515 I pulled recently includes all the requisite parts (4516, 4517, and pin).

Best regards,
John
