Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

This is my all-time favorite Plomb. It just may be my all time favorite tool in my entire collection!
A rope banded socket. I only have this one. When I saw it on ebay, I snapped it up. I've blocked out of my memory what it cost! :D

Why are Proto tools today so plain looking when they were once so uniquely stylized? :dunno:

I just picked these guys up last night, I had to show you all the ys speed brace! it does have owner markings but I think the rarity of it makes up for it. its the 9/16 female drive. plomb tool co los angeles. and the other is a 5480 speeder. I cant seem to find a completed listing on ebay for the ys ?

That's a great box. Nice find. Looks like an older one with the squared off corners. Probably late 30's at the latest. Looks like it's missing the removable tray.

One of these days I'm going to get around to actually making some reproduction water slide decals for the Plomb logo inside the boxes.

Here are a few sample images my buddy and I have drawn up for tshirt/decal ideas - these were all taken from old catalogs/decals that were macro photographed and retouched in photoshop so resolution/clarity in the finished product won't be an issue.

Gonna try to start making them soon.

I'll definitely get back on here once we finish. We'll probably only print 1 or two styles. I'll get back on here with pics once we do a print run. Since this is low budget and we're not looking to make money on it all the shirts will most likely be run in adult large.

If I may, I think
The style in the top center picture is the best one. After that the one on the bottom left.
Also, printing on a white tee shirt is not ideal. Some other base color would look better.
I'll definitely buy one! :rocker:

I do have the tray but forgot to put it in for the picture.
I for one would be interested in a decal for inside the box.

Those rope rings sockets are really hard to find. I have one and the stamping is light.

The dots on the wrench are original.

Yes, we're thinking Black, Green, and White. Possibly Red. I'll talk with my buddy and try to get things going.

Don't forget the one of the naked flying lady. I bet you could sell that to hipsters nation wide. They may have no idea what Plomb is, but will purchase based on the image alone. :lol_hitti

+1 for the gray shirts. You might want to think about starting a thread on here to see how much interest there are for these, I'm sure they're quite a few fellows who would be willing to all pitch in to get it going.

If you print it they will come!

That's an awesome find:thumbup:. The early pliers are fairly uncommon!!! I guess all the pliers are for that matter when compared to the other tools they produced!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I picked up this wrench a couple of weeks ago at a swap meet. It is a Plomb 1236 - 1 1/8" which I am guessing may date to the early 40's. To me it is special because I believe that it would have been made here in LA. I post it however because of the 5 'divots' in the side. They almost look too perfect to have been worked related injuries. Has anyone seen these marks before?

Could possibly be someone's method of personal markings?

...It looks a lot better than someone's initials etched on.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

These are my first Plvmb tools. A WF-21 3/8 ratchet and a #5262 3/8 12" extension.

I also have 8 total WF sockets, not pictured: 4x 3/8 drive WF-32 11/16, WF-30 9/16, WF-29 1/2, WF-25 1/4, 4x 9/32 drive WF-15 7/16, WF-14 3/8, WF-13 11/32, and WF-12 5/16. All 12 pt.

All of the WF tools have plumb bobs facing opposite directions except the WF-29 and WF-15.

It looks to me like someone just neatly marked them. I've seen grind marks on the edges of assorted tools before, pliers, wrenches, etc.

Cool wrench and I have never seen a plomb in that style.

I love those obstruction wrenches - very handy for automotive work - especially under the hood:thumbup:

Here are a few I've picked up from time to time over the last few months because of this thread. The WF-84 has an ugly owner's mark on it on the back side but the others are clean. The close up as you can see is a 1137: 25/32 - 11/16; it seems like an odd size.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Sorry for all the sideways pics... having trouble on the work computer.

Dug through my box to pull out my "Plomb LA" period stuff to check for duplicates so snapped some pics of all the LA items.

The first pic is just an overview of the Plomb LA stuff I could find. I know there's a bit more scattered through other boxes. Starting out my objective wasn't to collect Plomb LA, but as I built up sets I guess I kind of gained an affinity for the older Plomb stuff. Real nice steel. Plomb Los Angeles probably accounts for about 1/6th of my collection. Most of my items are from the USA/Pebble periods. One kind of cool fact is that the two small combo wrenches (bottom middle) are both dated 1933 which was the first year of production for combo wrenches. They were only available in 4 sizes that year.
PlombLA002.jpg

All the items in this pic have come from either local estates of the GWC swapmeet.

2nd pic are DD series sockets "rope banded". Some early adaptors 5/8 to 3/4 and 1/2 to 3/4, and an early partial grind off universal round o as well as some early ignition wrenches.
PlombLA003.jpg

3rd pic are some LA period 1/2 drive sockets.
PlombLA004.jpg

4th pic - nice 2 jaw puller from 1935 and a pile of "Plomb Tool Co" or a variation of... earlier stuff. The slide hammer is dated 1936.
PlombLA005.jpg

5th pic - some early screw drivers - the phillips is one of my most common users - its #2 with a hex handle and a broaching to be turned with a wrench.
PlombLA006.jpg

6th pic - some bits and small cold chisels - I've found it really hard to find cold chisels in these smaller sizes.
PlombLA007.jpg

7th pic - some larger cold chisels
PlombLA008.jpg
