Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

It's funny...why two breaker bar lengths? I guess complete is relative, I just thought it had common sockets, etc. no universal though...I'm already looking for the missing pieces.

Different bars for different jobs. Some jobs are low clearance and you can't fit a long bar in there so you are forced to use the short bar.

There are actually Three 1/2" breaker bar lengths (5466, 5467,5468), and those are the ones listed in the catalog. Plomb also liked to make a lot of things not listed in the catalogs. It makes having a (complete set) a challenge.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Interesting! I understand having several lengths for different jobs, it just seems like some of them are really close in size. The more I learn, the more I am amazed at the volume and variety of these sets. I am trying to put together that 1/2" socket set...not realizing how many pieces I was missing. I'm also interested in putting together a pebble wrench set, but I can see it isn't going to be easy either! Luckily finding the tools is half of the fun.

Thanks again for the info and help. I picked these up the other day.

What size drive is it?? Looks like an old 1/2 or 3/4 drive with the removable drive pin??? Looks to be 20's/30's but I can't quite make out the date symbol??? In your picture you need to rotate it a little more so we can see the symbol and we could date it pretty accurately. Look next to the Los Angeles and there should be a symbol or a number and letter which will tell us the date.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Farma11...that ratchet looks old!

I recently saw this at a local junk store and I did a little research (on GJ) http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57217 and then went back and picked it up.

There are no pics in that thread, but here is the Craftsman made by Plomb 'circle u' 1/2" drive ratchet I picked up today for $10.

Nice finds Duro, It's good to live in one of the Plomb zones. I've been picking Northern Oregon for along time, and it hasn't dried up yet. It might take awhile but can find all the Plomb you want here.

It's a 3/8th drive. the drive pin seems to be locked in. According to the date code it was made in 1937.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

This haul came from an estate sale about 10 miles from my house. The long wait and hefty price tag was worth it.

It's a near complete set of late 40s combo wrenches (12xx) that span from 1244 down to 1210. I think I'm missing one or two but I have some to fill those gaps. Also pictured are some DOEs and not shown it 2 sockets

~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Long time lurker, infrequent poster here. I actually found GJ while researching an old Plomb screwdriver. Since then I've been buying anything Plomb/Proto LA I can get my hands on. I love the style. In my area it is scarce enough make it fun to hunt, but just plentiful enough to find regularly. I thought I'd share of anyone's interested.

The only thing of mine that I don't think I've seen anywhere before is the green tool tray. I use it for the in the house tools, but I would guess it came from inside a larger box.

Good start to the collection! When you have a moment, we would like to see your pictures, but they are all connected together which makes them hard to see in their fullness. It would be much easier to see if you can put a space between the pictures by hitting the enter button after each picture url posted when you are making your post. I think we might be able to help with the green tray. You are correct, I think it was part of a bigger set but I can't think of which set off the top of my head.

The tool tote was sold separately and is catalog number 9920 - Handy Tool Tray. page 17 in catalog 19R.
That is very nice!

Great, another thing I did not know about that now I feel the obsessive urge to buy. Just when I thought I had seen it all a new item is pictured and now I will have to find one:evil:

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I'm doing some cleaning today and pulled this out of one drawer in my tool box. It's going to hit the storage shed since I just have too much plomb.

I thought everybody would like to see the variety of wrenches that plomb made over the years:beer:

I picked up the 86A cold chisel and this PLOMB thing today for 50 cents each. I quickly looked through the thread and older catalogs but didn't notice it anywhere. Anyone know what it is? Am I reading the date code right to say it's 1928? It's stamped with a 32 and then a bigger more pronounced 3. The hole on the side goes through to the other side. The hole on the end goes to the side-to-side hole.

As soon as I saw this I was thinking it was a handle to a stud puller?? Anyone else want to take a stab?

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

That is a rivet set. the typical use would be with a copper belt rivet and burr. they still make them and lots of people still use them. http://www.csosborne.com/rivets_1.htm

I was visiting my parents a few weeks ago and Mom had a box of "junk" from the shed that she was going to take to the metal recycling depot with the household recycling... had a look and found a couple vintage trowels and pointing tools, a couple bronze concrete edgers and an 86A los Angeles !!!! my Grandfather was a master mason and somewhere along the way these ended up in Dads shed... now they are in mine. :)

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Mustang -- Cool, thanks! I confidently told a friend I'd have a GJ answer in an instant. After several days of no response, I entertained the thought the GJ crew had been stumped but my faith is restored (shame on me, I'll never doubt again, promise). Regarding the horse harness comment in your linked thread, I also acquired some horse blanket safety pins from the same seller so both may be related.

I do metal sculpture so now I just have to figure out how to use it including what "holes are for "drawing" the rivet tight on the back-up washer" means in a practice; I understand the principle. Now that I know what to look for, I'll look for instructions.

Thanks again guys!

Sure!...keep an eye out for the garage sale when I croak. The Mrs sez she's putting up the garage sale sign before she calls for an ambulance.

I'm not shy about using them but they are in the woodshop, not the garage. The Plomb stuff turns up often at the flea or garage sales...never in a set, only a few at a time. I just toss them in the 'Plomb' drawer as i find them!

SH: my wife has the big "FREE" sign ready maybe even if i decide to take a few day vacation before i croak. i might have to give her access codes to GJ so she can PM you guys first. that's how i usually find the Plvmb sets too except i think i found a 3/4 inch socket set in one sale that i think i still own.

cheers,
D
