I sniped some plvmb off eBay which I got for less than the cost of the shipping[emoji3] I am surprised no one here bid against me! I will post some pics one I get said items! Speaking of eBay who is out bidding me on the top box like ragtopta's ? Don't worry , I am topped out in that auction!

I want to but with the missing cover and also the seller sketches me out a little bit on the shipping . Notice how the shipping says it is from Florida but the item says it is in Oakland ? I asked the seller about this via eBay messenger and tried to pin him down on a cost to me since I am in Oregon . He would not give me an Oregon rate for shipping and was avoiding the question. It just means for me that the hunt continues for the right box!

Plomb question of the Day: How hard is it to come by a Big Bertha? I found one thats $125 and says the gear doesnt turn correctly.. thats it. Im wondering if its worth a look or my time talking to the guy..

I saw one at the swap meet for $65 but I did not get it because I know I will never use it ! Big berthas are hard to find but most people don't want them so that limits their resale value ! If you needed it to use it I would say it is not a bad price but if you are just buying it to add to your collection I would wait for a better priced one !

I was always under the impression that Big Bertha's were 7/8" female drives and male sockets. When did the 1" fall under the Big Bertha's?

well I went to look at the add and the post has expired... dang. it said 1" big bertha Plomb Ratchet... oh well.. in the mean time I set all my Plomb stuff out to take a MASS picture of what I have so far... I think I have a problem....

I'm gonna have to spread it all out to get a group pic. Theres so much underneath all that **** its unreal.. one has 14 ratchets in the bottom.. under the ziplock with the screw drivers and such... I gotta get back to messing with my big box.. this one day off every 8 ***** : (

That 3/4 box is a 5695 and the middle latch you have half of first seems to appear in the 1942 catalog (pg 50). My impression is mid war the army was using all the green, so after that boxes were red.
Now hurry up and paint that box. I need a paint code, and mine doesn't even have a valid color sample to work from.
I paid $40 for it with the sweet patina import socket set,
Then I drove another half hour to get the matching ratchet for $20. Sped the whole way.
No date code on pebbles, but the non pebbly grip, and more teardrop shaped head make me think this must be a first year pebble. The plate was a little warped and the screws in super bad shape. Turns out a low grade M7(?) screw deforms enough to strip itself in without disturbing the plate. With the guts clean and a dab of lube, it works perfect.
It took some fine angle grinding to remove the mushroom tip of the too long screw.
The paint from inside my box seems to be stuck to the big Chine socket. I think that purple color happens around 550F?
I do need to find a few more of the 4 ring sockets....

There's a little bit of surface rust in a couple of drawers and the inside the lid there's a little paint still needs to come off. Few dents then get it sanded and ready for primer. Then find a painter!

All three of my boxes had good paint samples left so should be easy to match. I'll report back when I get that far. thanks for the info on the box! I gotta find a ratchet hopefully for $20! and a Sliding T bar! oh and a couple of extensions.

Yeah that box got hot at some point! As I am sure you someone serviced your ratchet some time and put it back incorrectly. The selector should not be on the drive side . Nice pick up !

One of the pawls was in there upside down for a very long time too, you can see the wear pattern is a hair different, and it clicks a tiny bit different in one direction.
thinking I should open an extra can of worms and try to pull the hinge pins out of my box so I can attempt to straighten the parts separately.

I can think of two reasons for installing the selector upside down. First, the selector sticks up and in tight quarters could hang up on an obstruction, leading an user to flip the guts to put the selector on the socket end.
Second, the pawls could wear to the point of slipping, and flipping the gear in relation to the pawls could present a fresh wear surface.

I found this WF Plomb speeder today for a dollar.
It matches the half inch breaker I already had.
Both of them have the odd up/down arrows.
The ratchet with a few Protos for comparison.
They are all marked 5249 and the chunkier Proto is labeled Professional.

The "nifty " bar is actually an offset screw driver but can be used as a pry bar I suppose . Nice pick ups!

Someone sharpened the screwdriver a bit, which led me to think it was a pry bar.
I am not sure why, but I really enjoy using tools that are not chrome plated.
Oh, I also have a pebble 3/8" breaker I will try and post a photo of. That one is chrome plated.

I feel you on the chrome tools. I actually enjoy my plvmb that is cadium plated or is just as forged finish better than my chrome tools!

I'd be on this, but I'm laid up post shoulder surgery. Maybe one of you silicon valley Plombites? The Proto WF is especially interesting; I suspect the Plomb is likely 9/32 drive. 25 simoleons.

I was gonna get those for the breaker as well and got busy doing something else and forgot about them till it was too late! i slacked off buying much off Flea bay since I have been hitting sales and fleas so much finding stuff. I get to go back to the monthly this sat and see Florres the tool guy and get some of those delicious Amish fried pies!!

Judging by what you grabbed, I don't think that the Plomb was 'scarce'. Here you'd be lucky to find a couple pieces.
went over to a guys house advertising an edger. found out he was going to have a g-sale. checked out some of his tools and got some plomb. the breaker bar might be something unique? everything is marked. the power trim, although nice was over priced. anybody know anything on the blackhawk sockets upper right corner?

I've been waiting for a suitable explanation on the Proto WF ratchet. I've only been collecting for a short time but was under the impression that the Proto name was created post war. This one seems rare, imo.
