I combined the pebble wrenches I found over the summer with my existing collection and took the opportunity to take some pictures.

Thanks, guys. While taking the pebble pictures, I found that these wrenches were missing their pebbles. The second and third pictures are a comparison of two wrenches with the same numbers, one with pebbles and one without.

Mooreag47: welcome back!!!

JEEP: pretty nice little pile of plumb you've got there. tool boards take up a lot of wall space so not for everybody so hopefully you have a nice drawer for them.

ALL: I'm starting to get the shakes a bit now that i'm starting to organize my wrenches and sockets cause I haven't found or bought any in a while. that said when I find an old toolbox, bucket or container with some in it I guess it's sort of like going to my own private FREE garage sale.

carry on!!

Thanks, Drives,
They pretty much fill up my Plomb box. I’m going to have to eliminate some duplicates. I have no wall space available for boards.

Jeep: that's a pretty sweet Plumb box. I hear you about Duplicates cause a few years ago i wanted a plumb set to use daily and another sort of collectible set and somewhere I found other brands and stuff catching my eyes and my cash.

maybe soon i'll have at least one working set and one of those Plumb boxes you and a few others have.

is that label one that Smokeshow made or did you find it elsewhere cause i'm guessing it's not original?

The label is one I bought on eBay. The box looked pretty plain without anything on the lid, in my opinion.

JEEP: I think one of our member's Smokeshow made up a bunch and sold a few on Ebay so maybe you got a one of his. or not. I agree it looks better with a label there.

ALL: speaking of Smokeshow's labels here's the ones I got from him.

just trying to find the right box or tool board to put them on so they are quietly sitting around waiting. (hope the glue doesn't go bad before I find a spot for them)

Found a missing link on my 8pt set with the addition of a 13/16" 8pt. I am only missing the 2 largest sizes 1-1/16" and 1-1/4". I have only ever seen in them that catalog. Those sockets have to be huge.
Here is a family photo along with some 4pts.IMG_20191003_180038366.jpegIMG_20191003_180055912.jpegIMG_20191003_180042902.jpeg

Thanks. I started out just collecting the wartime stuff but the pebbles kind of grew on me.

OLSON: i'm not sure I own those big sockets you are missing so you I can post a real picture of them and just curious if they are 1/2 inch drive or another size?

Jeep: yep PEBBLES seemed to catch my eye about 6 years ago too and I was lucky to find a few and i've just missed some really nice sets.

looks like you really like the ratchets?

This maybe easier. The first picture are 1/2" drive. The second picture are 3/4" drive.Screenshot_2019-10-04-08-21-48.jpgScreenshot_2019-10-04-08-23-02.jpg

OLSON: so i'm guessing in a past life you made a few charts?

looks like you put RED IN THE BOX if you need it and Yellow if it's on it's way to your door and the # of them you own. sound about right?

I love the old thick sockets and with PLVMB on their sides even better!! when they made the thick sockets there wasn't Kroil or PB Blaster so they had to be well built or the guys would break them trying to get rusty bolts off. now that style is called IMPACT i'm guessing cause most of the regular sockets would break if they were used the way guys used them 70 years ago.

Haha,
I got sick of buying duplicates. I use to do it in my head but when I got over 500 pieces it started to blur together. Red means I don't have it. Yellow is pending. I found Google sheets on my phone and it has helped so much.

A very apt comparison, Drives. I have been fooled a few times at flea markets by some of these modern impacts that have an old look to them and a dark steel finish especially when they are caked in old grease and such and mixed in with heavy base and heavy walled cold-broached 30's sockets.

LUG: same here. i think my logic comes from looking at buckets and piles of sockets where I didn't want to buy the entire bucket cause seller wanted too much for it, but they only wanted $.25 per socket. FUN TIMES!!

I rarely if ever took pictures of some of the piles of tools I found to buy while some of the guys were looking at their phones checking Ebay prices. I usually found some I liked, paid for them and left with the tools as they were still standing their on their phones or talking about who knows what.

since our weather is settling in to rain and 40's i'm guessing your morning fleas will slow down soon, but i know you have other ways of finding cool old stuff so best of luck this winter.

Ended up picking up this late Utica adjustable example. Now I have an example of each Plomb production minus the rare diamond contract one. The only one I have seen is in AA. Does anyone have an example of one of these? I have included some of the contract examples.IMG_20191004_143235595.jpgIMG_20191004_143241911.jpg

This is actually one of my biggest peeves. I have watched the scanner kids (as I call them) basically destroy the used book market while having no knowledge of the actual trade, which I did a de facto apprenticeship in. It drives me crazy to watch them just scan the bar codes without having any real ability to tell what makes a good book, only what they can sell it to Amazon for.

/rant over.

Here are my Plomb finds at an Oakland estate sale this morning. I took a before and after shot. The yellow paint was quite difficult to remove.

Agreed Roy on your comment about the 8 pt's. Here is a link to the comparison I did earlier on the 1" 8 pt vs 12 pt. The 1" is the largest of these that I have also. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7582648&postcount=5330

Found a missing link on my 8pt set with the addition of a 13/16" 8pt. I am only missing the 2 largest sizes 1-1/16" and 1-1/4". I have only ever seen in them that catalog. Those sockets have to be huge.

Here is a pick of a dual marked Plomb-Proto 1-1/16" 8 point socket on the far right

Olson: i've got a few of those 1/4 inch socket set boxes and I really like them a lot. not sure i've got many sets with them, but I think I have some.

thanks for the hammer post and I love the wood handle. I'm not sure if I have a wood handle or not on my Proto, but I know it has a grip wrap. it's tucked away at the moment, but I might see it before too long to snap a pic and post it for you (us) to compare.

Roy,
No matter how many of the Plomb 1/4” drive sets I’ve got, I would have grabbed that case in a heartbeat. Nice pick up!
