I know this is nothing compared to what all you heavy duty Plombers have, but I got this yesterday and was quite excited. It was the first pebbles I have seen in real life.

At the local Flea Market today, I found a Plomb hinge handle with interesting markings. It is 9-1/2" long, so it should be a #5466, but that number appears nowhere on it. It should have a hole for a 1/2" diameter pin handle, but the hole is 3/8" diameter. The markings are " DMH vPLOMBv, LOS ANGELES 0E, PATENT NO. 1380643" The 0E should be a date code of May, 1940. I have no idea what DMH means.

Does anyone have any ideas on these markings?

Yes. That patent is the famous/infamous Eagle patent (June 7, 1921) that Plomb was licensing from the very beginning, Jock. (Later it became the subject of a lawsuit between Samuel Eagle - a Canadian - and P&C, when P&C started making hinge handles with that design as an alternative to their flex head, which was not forked. P&C won.) The "DMH" is a model "number" from the early era when Plomb was using a phonetic model numbering system, with model numbers that reflected or were relate to the name of the tool. "D" is 1/2-inch drive. "M" could be male. The "H" is almost certainly Hinge. "DL" was a 1/2-inch drive L or Ell handle, for example. "DSB" was a 1/2-inch drive Sliding (Tee) Bar. Your hinge handle has the "O" in PLOMB and LOS ANGELES logo, so definitely before 1934 and I would say late 1920's. That "date code" is a red herring.

I found it in Catalog No. 8 (1928), page 14. They offered a nut spinner set they called "DD102 Midget Socket Set." (The "midget" in this usage does NOT indicate 1/4-inch drive size...) It consisted of a DMH hinge handle, a pin handle, and six 12-point sockets from 7/16" to 3/4". All 1/2-inch drive. In different sets, they offered a DH hinge handle (13" OAL) and a DTH hinge handle (18" OAL). Given all of that, I would conclude that the "M" in DMH is for Midget. D (1/2-inch drive) Midget Hinge. Whereas the DTH is probably D (1/2-inch drive) Tall Hinge.

As Lugz stated it is an early part number. I believe it would be 1930.
That is one heck of a find.

Thanks for the information Lugs! I knew it was earlier, but not that early!

I wonder what the "0E" means? It could be "OE" as the O is pretty round. I doubt "original equipment" is applicable.

The fact that it is older makes sense from the patent being listed.

It came from an unsorted bin of the floor under a table at the Flea. The vendor is my favorite. He is always there and often has interesting pieces, although he focuses on later stuff and pushes Craftsman brand.

It's a zero, not an "O".... 1930

Here are my latest additions to the 54XX 1/2" drive set. Finally found a round handle 5467 and it wound up being a 1934 Los Angeles version! Also finally found a 6523 connecting rod nut socket and it is also a Los Angeles version. I was inspired by Roy's recent post about his 8 points and also have been adding a few as I find them including these five.

Nicely done. That is a nice bar. The longer the hunt the more bittersweet it is when you finally find one and if you are like me you will find a second one shortly after.

I think that happens with most tool collectors [emoji23] I know if I find something, next week or swap meet, it will be found in nicer shape and cheaper [emoji849]

More: did you knock on the door of the old Plvmb factory and find those laying on a bench? wow those look good.

Rubi: I love those meaty old sockets and seems like the only ones made like that today are called IMPACT. nice find

ALL: I can't say i've seen any Plvmb in a while and maybe cause there are a few guys coming up here now from Oregon and making up for those years when an early morning drive to Portland and back by lunch with a load of Plvmb and vises didn't kick my ****.

I'm only sort of whining cause I don't have time to clean and document the ones I have, but i do miss the days when a rusty bucket of great tools was $5-10 and I didn't have to buy it from a nice lady that lost her husband.

hope you are all having a great weekend!!!
