...it still lists the plomb tool company as owner...
The Plomb Tool Company was still the owner. They did not change the name of the company in 1949 and were never compelled to do so by the Plumb lawsuit. (The company was still known as the Plomb Tool Company until 1957, when they changed the name to Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. And the company was never known as the Proto Tool Company. The name "Proto", which PTTI continued to use as a brand, became the name of an Ingersoll-Rand Division when Ingersoll-Rand bought PTII in 1975.) They had to stop using "Plomb" on the tools or anywhere else as a brand, rather than as the full name of the company. If the Plomb Tool Company was sending out new boards with only the newly TM'ed "Proto" sticker on it - which your board appears to be an example of, it would've been 1950 through 1956.

Yes, correct... The plomb tool company name existed long after the lawsuit... well into the proto la era..

Nice set don, I have a similar one

I picked up this more round handled chrome plated ratchet off of an eBay seller to replace the flat handle MFD. U.S.A. that I had polished up. It’s the same style as yours and seems more appropriate to the set. Most of my flat handle pebble ratchets are MADE IN U.S.A. rather than MFD.

I recently noticed that my pebble combos are a mix of MFD and MADE markings. For many, there is plenty of room to have been marked MADE, so it isn't that they were limited in space in the marking area.

Well who picked up this unicorn?! I believe this was the rare 5th variant of adjustable wrench that may have been produced by diamond according to Alloy Artifacts.Screenshot_20210226-163532.jpeg

Interesting wrench.

Puttering around in the garage here. Put a “3/8 in a 1/4 body” kit in this little 4” Proto special ratchet that was without guts. It had a good pawl and switch so those stayed.

There is a whole thread on 3/8 drives into 1/4" bodies. I have Proto and SK examples now. I want a Willaims/SO version and have the kit, but not yet the right body. All three companies made them and I think maybe a couple more.

These are far and away better than a "std" 3/8 stubby!

I have a Cornwell like that, probably my favorite ratchet.

Lugz, I have a PROTO la tool board with that same stamp... I have posted it before but it was on the plomb/proto tool board thread... here it is again. Which also leads me to a shameless plug- if you guys have any of the wrenches pictured that I need, feel free to pm. Thanks

Here is my list of what I need to complete this Proto LA board...one member asked for a list and I know if I provide a list it will probably be alot easier to see that the old markings on the board

Tappet wrenches- 3425, 3426

Stubbie Dbe's-1120,1122, 1125, 1130

Doe-#3035

I would be interested in any of these...thanks.

I’ve been going along adding universal and deep sockets to these 3/8” drive sets and took some pictures to evaluate which items I’m still missing. I need a chrome plated 13/16” shallow, 7/16” deep and 5/8” deep. In wartime finish sockets I need a 1/2” deep and 11/16” deep.

Lugs:

I think you meant 1964 as the date when IR purchased Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. The acquisition took place on 2/28/1964 according to the newspaper accounts.

Well, the French 75 as a cocktail came from the explosive effect the shells had!

I read a great (very sad) novel about English pilots during WWI, and just how much those young men drank in between missions. And considering the training they received and the casualty rate, I am hardly surprised that they got stinking drunk at every opportunity. And you are right, it is gin.

Kind of an unusual addition to my collection today and I haven't been able to find this exact piece in any of the early catalogs that I have available to me. When I searched for bit brace on this board I only found one post from Roy as per the below link, but I don't think this is his missing piece. The numbering left of the round O Plomb mark isn't very clear.

Any name for this novel?

I'm gonna try and tell this as accurately as I can remember. My dad's story (and he sticks to it) is that he bought my childhood home (built 1907) from an african-american man. He said they bought it right after WWII; Second owners of the house. The mans grandfather was a pilot in WWI. He found out the man had pictures from that war, some with airplanes. When he asked him if he'd be interested in selling some photots the man said it was all trash and junk.

Right after getting the house he said he found a couple negatives/photos next to the trash can(this would be 1979) and he almost had a heart attack at the thought of someone throwing away evidence of an African American pilot in WWI that they were related to.
My dad says he still has the few pictures somewhere, but he(dad) hasn't been organized in a looooong time. I hope I see them someday.

Either way WWI pilots are something else. Crazy job at a crazy time.

The Chrome plated 11/16” universal arrived yesterday and the three Cad plated NOS universals (5/8”, 11/16” and 3/4”) arrived today. They will go into the red box and green box 3/8” drive sets.

When I went to add the new cad plated universal sockets to the 3/8” drive toolset, I found that the one marked 11/16” was actually 3/4”. Since they were NOS, I guess nobody ever noticed.

I was surprised that there didn’t seem to be much interest in this dual marked 1/2” drive ratchet listed on eBay. I was prepared to bid higher than what it ended up going for. Since it was assembled reversed I expected that it would have been clean inside but I was wrong. It’s now cleaned and working well.

Thanks, Rube. I was somewhat surprised that after seeing that my friend’s 3/4” drive was pebble that this one was a round handle. Since they are one year only there probably aren’t that many choices.

I saw that ratchet and thought about trying to grab it but kind of forgot about it. I’m glad it went to a good home. I do think it is interesting that there were dual marked round handles but pebble ones just marked Proto. Did they have a couple factories and one of them just chanded over to the round handles quicker?
