Thanks for that information. Lazily, I usually use USPS; or at least start there. I should look into using FedEx on bigger stuff. Sorry for being so pessimistic. That seems like a great price for a box that size/weight.

Saukit’s box is in above average condition in my opinion. Normally I haven’t seen the 9989 sell for this much but I would be pleased to have either. My 9989 is about the same condition as the one that just sold on the bay. I wouldn’t pay that much but am glad to see others value them.Looks like you got your $100.00 box for half the going rate! Plus no shipping.

Mine pictured above needed a hinge welded. I bought it on eBay almost exactly two years ago for about 30% of the cost of the one that just sold. I would say that they have appreciated significantly recently like many other vintage tools. Shipping costs have increased dramatically as well.

It seems like the USPS pricing is good if the items being shipped will fit into one of their various flat rate priority boxes or envelopes. If the item weighs under 16oz first class parcel is an even more inexpensive option although slightly slower. They are extremely expensive for large or heavy boxes and if I had to ship one of those, I would check out UPS ground or one of the Fed Ex ground shipping options.

I sell a lot through eBay, and they give me really good shipping rates if I purchase through them. But that cost is upfront, so I have to pay them for this before I get paid by eBay. No big deal for me, but something to keep in mind. And this seems to be for both the post office and UPS. I have never done FedEx with them. But, the key to making sales on that platform work, at least in my experience, is to know the shipping costs beforehand. In other words, know the weight, the size, have a box ready, as so on before you list the item. Otherwise you will get burned through no ones fault but yourself.

Yup, true that. Putting all the dimensions into the shipping area allows you to have accurate shipping calculations. If not then you can get hosed bad with shipping. Doesn’t take that much longer to just plan ahead with an auction listing to help the buyer calculate shipping. We know we have all seen sellers taking way too much for shipping on a low priced item. You don’t want to lose out on a potential sale because you were asking too much for shipping or the buyer wasn’t able to calculate it correctly

Few things I have gotten lately. 1456 Fender dolly, Ranger AT 139. not sure if this is really a Ranger production tool, or someone made it with a Plomb socket and a wrench.... its 11/16. Can't find any info on it. Also a little 8122 DBE. also a killer Plomb sign from Smoke.. Looks pretty good on the old pick up.... hmmm

Based on the other Ranger tools I have seen, the markings look proper. Ranger was a subsidiary of Fairchild Aircraft, and made two types of engines, a 6-cylinder Inverted in-line air-cooled model and a 12-cylinder inverted air-cooled model that had options for geared drive, supercharging, or both. The small engines started out a 370 cubic inches and grew to 440 cubic inches, normally aspirated and using a single carburetor. The horsepower increased from 120 to 200. The V-12's
The V-12's started out at 250 HP and grew to 575 HP during WWII. Larger models were designed, but never reached production.
The Ranger name was introduced in 1931, so special tools could have had that name stamped onto them from that point on. Both the 6's and 12's were in production at that time, so a tool could have been developed for either (or both) with a very low AT-number.
11/16" hex is standard for 7/16" SAE (and aircraft standard) nuts. I have a manual for the -440 series engines, but it does not include a list of tools. It often mentions a tool when describing a particular operation.
BINGO!!! The manual calls out the AT-39 as a Spark Plug Wrench for shielded spark plugs! 11/16 was used on earlier shielded spark plugs, and several sizes were tried before settling on 7/8" as the standard hex. I suspect that this wrench could also be used on some (or most) -770 series engines, as the cylinders are very similar.
This is in keeping with common practice among aircraft engine manufacturers. Low part numbers generally were for commonly used tools, especially tools that were included with the engine when delivered. Larger part numbers tended to be used for tools used for overhauls and rebuilding, but were also used to identify common tools that superseded the earlier tools. It is rare for a low number to be reused or have a modified (like a suffix letter) version. I think the idea was to keep the numbers very specific so someone in the field would not get confused and use the wrong tool.

Lots of great info thanks! It kind of threw me off when I saw that you could barely make out the Plomb logo on the socket part of the tool. But it seems to be put together pretty well!

Ive thought over the years of this build, I may take it and have a Plomb Tools Co sign painted on the door with the Dallas address etc. I thought how cool would it be to have a 1930 Plomb Tool Mobile (truck)!!

That would be awesome! The only question is, when you re-painted it, would it be Olive Drab, Brilliant Chinese Red, or Lustrous Metallic Blue, because those are the only acceptable by-the-book choices!

I may have slightly overpaid for this hinge handle on eBay but they are a little hard to find.
Here are before and after cleaning shots.
I briefly thought of adding a crossbar and making a 4700 F set but added it to an almost complete green box set now just missing the 4760 short extension.
These sets will be added to the basement Plomb display.

question for the experts. is this wrench supposed to exist? it is not dual mark like the top one and to my understanding only proto came with the pebble on the size. Any ideas?

Due to the Plumb vs Plomb lawsuit, I would have expected the PL∇MB to have been ground off, like others I’ve seen. It probably just got missed.

I've seen those before. I have one and have sold one but the very few I've seen have always been larger than that one, a 3045 or 3050.
