Porcelain floor, I finally did it

Well I finally booked off some me time, told the family "no more car repairs for 2 weeks"

And laid half my floor, here's the deal I have with my wife, I get the whole garage from April (my birthday) to October ( my wife's bday) then she gets half garage to park all winter until April.So come next April I will move all my motorcycles and tools to the "car Side" and finish the job.

All worked performed basically followed Dakota00's instructions , http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=212509 so won't bore you with details, just some pic's of the job.

First section.

Garage faces north, always get rain blown in, started first row so garage door gasket seals against schluter Reno u. Works really well.

More tiling, I used cut tiles for baseboards ( will finish baseboards in spring when tiling other side of garage)
Used good quality silicone for baseboard/floor line.
Prepping/cleaning for grout

Finished!
Schluter edging on pit perimeter.

I am soooo pleased, I am very proud of the job, very flat, it's beautiful!
My wife Carolyn was amazing @ backbuttering and snap cutting tiles (and encouragement)
She loves the floor( and heated garage in the mornings)

This is what the finished recessed lift will look like, now that floor is done I will adjust height of steel planks to sit flush with floor
Pic before tile but with steel plank filler pieces so you get the idea.

Yes. Spoken from a man who has gone out "just to grab something real quick" and then spent 5 minutes staring in silence at tile.

Seriously though, nice work on the tile. That's what my shop floor should have been.

As I watch the mercury plummet into the -15C range, TO looks rather tropical from this vantage point right now!

They're tough as hell. Amazingly. I've had mine all speckled up from mig, plasma cutting, my knife grinders(belt-disc) and done nothing more than an acid wash and they clean up as if they were new again.Not even a mark. I bought an extra 300 SF in case of problems. I dropped a vice in the shop and had to dig out a gas line to my stove and was lucky(smart) to have the 20 pieces to do the repairs. I just keep them stashed in the woods. The bugs nest in the stack of tile. They're there when I may need some.
Buy many extra boxes. You will NOT regret it.

Shopping tiles, dream is 2 shades of gray, porcelain, pei 5, matte, not skid, checkerboard pattern, with dark epoxy grout.

Looking for close out of something in the 99 cent per sq foot range.

I picked up 825 sq ft of Race Deck 3-4 years ago and they still sit in the corner of my garage in their original boxes. After I got them I saw a few threads from guys who installed porcelain tiles and began to think I should go that way. Haven't done it yet as back injury stopped me in my tracks but one day.........

As far as my back is concerned, I planned this into my install, 1/2 batches of thinset, skip a day to be cautious, 1/2 and so on. Worked out well

Like if you drop a hammer on the tile when it's below 0 degF outside...
wouldn't cold temps make the tile more brittle and likely to crack??

Looks awesome! How did you file at the garage door? Did you stop just inside where the door comes down or did you go out to the lip? Did you use any transition piece for when pulling the car in?

yes, schluter reno-u for transition, bottom of door seal sits halfway on transition/existing concrete slab, making a great seal against driving rain etc.

We have about 5600 SF of that miracle stuff. Cant be beat...literally ! Ive spattered it with mig and sparked it with grinders and five minutes of acid wash and it's good as new.
Its a tad more than 99 US pesos per foot. More like $3-4........
