I may have a 3/8" drive one similar to the S-K type at my summer home but I am kind of looking at every sale for the open gear type like I used to have. I've checked eBay but I'm too cheap (frugal?) to pay those asking prices. If you run across one at the flea, please pick it up for me. Thanks for asking!

Thanks, I'm sure that I will run across a 77J pretty soon. I found a Thorsen grind off DBE wrench on Saturday. Here it is next to a regular Thorsen wrench.

It looks like I no longer need the 3/8" drive ratchet. I found a nice batch of Thorsen items at an estate sale Saturday. Here are some pictures of those tools and my current Thorsen collection.

Hey Don -

I have a bunch of Thorsen, and run across LOTS of Thorsen tools at the flea market etc. Let me know if you want me to add Thorsen to my "acquire for Don if really cheap" list which now contains only Barcalounger.

BTW - who did you mention to me that is into Monkey Wards Powercraft? I picked up some neat promo items (including a couple NOS pocket protectors) that I'd like to pass on to someone who would appreciate them.

Thanks for thinking of me. My Thorsen is getting pretty close to complete although I don't have many Thorsen DBE wrenches. Most of my PowrKraft tools end up in Username's PowrKraft toolbox stack. We do frequent trades. I heard he recently added a center section from Twertsy to it. We should get together sometime and do some trading. I'm sure I have some items that you would be interested in and I would be happy to take those Barcalos off your hands!

Username sent me some great Thorsen items for my collection yesterday. Here are a few pictures. The first shot is of the new arrivals. The other ones are shots of old and new tools together.

That set of wrenches is coming along nicely!
Just noticed that the 14mm combo has a different part number than the others... that's odd.
I've added a note in my phone for what you've got. I'll continue to keep an eye out for the rest.

Nice stuff, guys.

I could use another 1/4" and 3/8" open gear ratchet for hard use, and I only lack a 16mm MADE IN USA (middle period) combo wrench to complete my set. #1016

If anyone has those items, PM me.

I didn't find any actual Thorsen items at an estate sale today but I did come away with quite a few Action pieces keeping it all in the family.

A Rare Bird comes home to roost:
A Thorsen 2032 VGroove combo. Now that I've called it "rare" there will probably be a flood of pix of them. But, it took me several months to find one. The biggest I found easily was 15/16, so I was pretty happy to find this guy, even though I probably overpaid on evilBay.
In the combo's, I'm still looking for 1/4 and bigger than 1". I know the Snap-On version (VS series) is easily found in the bigger sizes, but I'd prefer Thorsen.

I found this JCPenney box at a garage sale. The ratchet and sockets appear to be made by Thorsen. Is that correct? I dug out my !/2" for comparison.

Penney's sockets and flat wrenches were not made by Thorsen. The earlier ones branded Penncraft were made by New Britain; the later ones branded J C Penney were made by S-K. I don't know if this is true of other tools like your screw drivers that are marked J C Penney.

As far as I know during that era (60's-70's-80's) all the mechanics' tools were house branded, so any of yours that are not branded or carry other brands were probably not bought at Penney's. They did sell the boxes separately, so it could easily have been bought at Penney's and filled with tools bought elsewhere.

edit: I just took a closer squint at your pix - that 3/8 ratchet is branded J C Penney all right, but it sure looks more like a Thorsen than an S-K. Time to dive back into Alloy Artifacts.

I found quite a few Thorsen wrenches at an estate sale on Friday. They probably doubled the size of my wrench collection.

Mostly. I got all the Thorsen on Friday and the seller said that everything had to go by Saturday afternoon and the prices would drop dramatically. I hit the Concord flea Saturday morning to kill some time and then went back to the sale and picked up all this for $20.00. It took me two days to get through it all. The first picture is the Friday haul, the second is Saturday flea items and the third is the estate sale close out items. You need to get well soon and get back out there!

Here are a couple of Giller 1/4" drive sets. There are a few Thorsen and Action pieces included.

After Username generously sent me some more Thorsen items, I took a few minutes to take some pictures of my collection so far.

Thanks, Bonneyman! The collection is steadily growing. Username sent me a nice flex head 3/8" drive ratchet yesterday and today I picked up an almost complete set of Vee combo wrenches. The last picture is the set cleaned up.

Noted: Hopefully I get the opportunity to visit the store and do some shopping!
Regards,
John

Well my planned trip to Oklahoma has been delayed and delayed and further delayed. The unpleasant weather out that way caused the original date to be moved back. Then it was a lack of available open dates on either their part or mine. I'm now shooting for the end of August and hopefully that wont' be cancelled.
Regards,
John

Thanks for posting the Snap-on examples. Apparently, Snap-on sold this style of wrench only in flare nut, double open end, possibly double box end and what I would call obstruction wrenches. They didn't offer combination wrenches in this style. I have also seen PowrKraft and recently a Bluegrass wrench in this style, as well. I found a few more Thorsen items at the Tahoe flea on Saturday including a couple of metric combos to add to my collection. The top 1/4" flex handle is Giller.

I have seen them marketed as Thorsen II wrenches. I think they were made after Thorsen relocated to Texas. I just call them Vee wrenches.
