its just a very simple stinger (i think it is sometimes also called "gin pole" ?!?)
made it for my Pete ...

... but i sold the truck without it so i duplicated the mounts onto the <T> chassis

its basically made of 3 heavy gauge 24' pipes with a 3 ton hoist to change angle and a 1 ton chain fall for lifting
works great for moving stuff around the yard
however, a backup camera is on my "to do" list ...
would make the reversing into a spot a lot easier

the potential legal problems of driving a class 8 without a CDL was one of the reasons why i sold the Pete.
i got tired of the whole "commercial or not" mess.
in theory it is completely legal, but not all the LEO`s know the exact rules and definition for RV
(or can identify the rig as private when you fly by the scales)

nobody will ever confuse the <T> for a commercial rig
it is clear at first glance that it is a private and/or vintage rig
on top of that i`m under 26k lbs GCVW what does not require a CDL to start with.

I like the jin pole crane setup. How much does it weigh?
Have you done much testing to see the max weight capacity at the various angles?

gin poles used to be common here in texas. have not seen many lately tho. used usually to pull well pipe and pumps on water wells.

I would call that a jib, I use gin poles when building towers. Either way, it is a great setup and looks like it works well for you.

As for DOT rules, they are so tricky, but as a personal use or RV you should be exempt regardless of the GVW of the truck. Just so you know you can have an under 26k truck and still need CDL A, it all depends on the trailer rating. It gets confusing, as you know even law enforcement officers get confused. I know the rules that apply to me and I keep a FMCSA handbook in the truck with bookmarks so I can reference it if there is an issue.

Can you register it as a motor home? That should take most of the DOT issues out of the equation. In Maine, it is very cheap to register a motor home.

I would worry about the legals also. Not because you're doing anything wrong but because gen X is starting to choose careers and LEO sounds easy to them. I say that because my buddy got stopped in his bagged phantom dually and was ticketed for no CDL with air brakes. The LEO a very young county mounty would not believe that the compressors and tank were just for the suspension air bags. I guess a 70's truck with airbagged suspension and a trailer with another classic caused some confusion.

great to see this project. I grew up in Tulsa, OK and so I remember the Spartan factory and my Dad had friends that worked there. We used to drive by it all the time on his way to work at the airport. I have seen many of those trailers from the old days, but recently as of a couple of years ago a guy nearby my neighborhood had about 4 of them parked by the side of his shop. I did a painting of I'll see if I can locate a pic of it.

Believe it or not, there are several old Spartans still lingering around the Tulsa area. Just off the top of my head I could drive you to at least three of them right now. Sadly, they all have seen better days but could still be saved.

That's right, this is a Jib Crane, a Jin Pole is primarily used for putting
up towers. We use them a bunch putting up ham radio towers or taking
down old commercial towers that companies want to get rid of

Maybe I say "we used to", don't do any tower work anymore what with
my screwed up back and bad knees

RoosterBooster is in New Hampshire right now, he's currently building another <T> with/for another PBB member. Lot's of budget involved; many parts from a couple Pete's donors, new custom frame rails, fully reman engine and a huge handmade (by RB) sleeper made from new (and THICK) aluminium.
