The Factory Five build thread is pending - pending me getting off my **** :)

Seriously, should be in a week or so when I get done accumulating tools and get to drilling.

Have you connected with any of the local guys who have done FF cars? Let me know if you want to get to know them - there is a lot of good knowledge locally on these cars. I have been involved with 3 builds (one street car and 2 race versions). I was the body and paint guy. It looks like they have improved their molding process since I worked on them.

The garage came out great - you giving tours at Cars and Cafe on Saturday???

Hi Tom,

My new Motorplex neighbor is Steve Flaten. He built a MK3 via donor and has already offered assistance. I've also emailed with a couple other of the Oddball Gang and hope to meet a few of them Saturday.

According to Steve, the new MK4 body is way, way ahead of the MK3 re seams.

I'll be at C&C all morning. Certainly swing by and introduce yourself, be happy to show you around.

Hi Chris,

Very nice build. I'm definately a lurker, but have been meaning to post up to your thread for some time. Everything about your build is awsome. I'm sure the Cobra will be just as nice. I've been to a couple C&C's and was wondering when the first one was going to be. If its not too wet, I'm going to try to make it out on Saturday. I've spoken with a couple of other owners and it seems like a great community.

Thanks for sharing your build,
Chad
Lakeville, MN

Edit: Wow! I didn't realize how much of a lurker until I saw this was only my 21st post after 5 years.

Some of the Factory Five C*bra.. We took some of the frame stand-alone, then with the body on. He did some really cool transparency with them.

Just wondering how high your roof is?

Thanks Frank.

Copper pipe is 1/2" from the closet across to the far wall where I'm going to mount the pull down hose.

I've ordered a black Bend Pak HD-9XW (higher lift version of the HD-9 I have now) and will probably order a 2 Post Bend Pak.

Good eye - I've had that scissor for a few years - great versatile lift. It's a Bend Pak MD-6XP. The scissor lift will host the FFR chassis instead of using jackstands.

I'm a big fan of Bend Pak lifts

Here are a couple of pics of the HD-9 and mid-rise in use at home:

Awesome setup. Where did you get the Gaming frame setup?

The seat is from an (correction) New Zealand company - Vision Racer

http://us.visionracer.com/home.html

Review: http://www.gtplanet.net/visionracer-vr3-review/

Bought it on eBay and saved $100

You get the seat/frame/TV mount/shifter mount in one big box shipped from Cali. Came in 5 days.

PS3, TV, Logitech G27 wheel/pedal/shifter set are extra.

It's a very good seat - there are better ones available, but at least 2 times the price.

No, the table (they are screwed together as one) is just sitting there. The wood edge keeps it from slipping off into the abyss. :)

We have a black powdercoated and stainless cable rail being built now.. should be in in a couple weeks.

The 4 post. Im in the market for a bend pak 4 post and am curious at what options you got and how the HD-9XW compares to the HD-9.

Sure.. I have an HD-9 at home. I bought that model because I have a couple of cars that have outside wheel to outside wheel dimensions wider than the standard -ST version. They fit quite nicely on the wide setting of the HD-9. My ceiling at home is 10.5', so I didn't need the extra height that the -XW offers.

At Motorplex, our ceiling height is 18' and I have enough room to accommodate the extra length of the -XW. (it's about 2' longer than the standard HD-9).

The -XW raises a foot higher than the base HD-9 and it looks like more in person. It's a big lift, but it's the lift of choice if you have larger vehicles and/or you have the room and don't want to go 'oh, damn I wish I could lift my X higher').

I don't have an RJ-45 at either location, mostly because I've had a scissor lift if I need to get the wheels off anything. Now that that is acting as host to the Factory Five kit, it's going to force me to either buy a rolling bridge jack or spring for a two-post for the shop.

FYI, the drip trays that BendPak currently offer do not work on the wide setting of the HD-9. I've contacted BendPak (as well as Jeff K directly, who indicated that they were pending) about this, but they have been very slow to bring this (necessary) option to market.

Hit me up if I can help further.

Thanks HIRISC

I will be making the purchase in June and am currently looking at the HD-9. I'm trying to decide on what options I need. Im thinking of getting the Caster Kit, 2 RJ-45's, and the Air Storage Bottle.

Are the standard ramps long enough for low cars?

also who did u purchase it from and did u install it or hire someone to do the install?

Thanks for all of your help
Frank

Hi Frank,

On second thought, I did buy the casters.. I recommend them.

I would recommend only 1 RJ-45 with a standard length HD-9. They are about 2' wide and two of them would significantly reduce your under-car access. If you don't care much about under-car access and/or you're buying them primarily for wheels-off work, then buy away.

I've read a couple of posts on the air bottle deal.. waste of money IMO.. buy an $80 Craftsman mini compressor or run a line from one you already have.

Standard ramps are fine - lot's of folks don't like the weight, but I leave mine on and they might weigh 30 lbs each max anyway. If you have a super low car like my Z06, you might need to put a 1x12 under the ramp front to create another step. There are most sophisticated ways to solve that problem - see this: http://www.raceramps.com/rackramps.html

I paid to have both my HD-9 and HD-9XW delivered and installed. IMO, getting the lift to your place is half the battle. It's not technically difficult, but you will need either 3 strong friends or a cherry picker to move the ramp with the hydraulic tube in it - several hundred pounds.

Edit - I bought all my lifts from Benco - they have offices in MN/WI. www.bencostuff.com Good people and they'll do their best to price match.

My two installers have probably done hundreds of them and they took 4 hours to do both my lifts. BendPak takes a little longer than some other brands due to running the airline that feeds the safety locks.

Thanks guys.

Although I'm not a big Sears fan - especially post K-Mart affiliation - I am a Crafstsman tool guy and have been for a long time.

The truck brands are awesome, but I'm not a professional wrench and my cheap self comes out when I'm staring at $10K for hand tools. I've brought some from my home setup as well as purchased some new stuff for the shop. The FFR build gives me an excuse to buy some speciality tools, but I'm not going overboard.

I think your was past overboard :p

Wow, a friend of mine just posted a link to this thread on his facebook wall. I just spent the last couple hours reading through it all, and I'm blown away at how awesome this build is.

I live in NC right now, but as it turns out I just accepted a job offer in Cannon Falls, MN and am moving to Eagan, MN in 2 weeks. In fact, our company headquarters for my new job is in Chanhassen, MN.

I obviously didn't make it out to C&C this past weekend since I didn't know about it and am still in NC, but I'll be there on May 1st!

I would absolutely love to stop by and check the place out if you don't mind. And if you ever need help wrenching on a project, I'd definitely help out!

What's your name and how would I know who you are if I wanted to introduce myself at the next C&C? I'll be in a grey Infiniti G37 Coupe.

Well there is no point in leaving the job at 90% :) Truth be told it looks like you could just have a tool truck back into the shop.

Thank goodness I like Craftsman tools.. they appeal to my generally cheap nature. I have a lot more room than $$ at this point.

Well done.

Thanks, but this site and a lot of really great garages pre-dated any thought I had of building a shop.

Does the Camaro ever "mark" the Corvette as its teritory?

That pic was taken at my house right after the lift was installed. After that, the only time the Camaro was on top of the Vette was over the winter hibernation (after I inspected/cleaned the bottom of the '69 to insure no such drips got on the Z) :)

With Motorplex done, there's more than enough room for my small entourage of vehicles.

Yep it official I hate you. But in a nice way.
