That is interesting. I have never seen a proto with a four point open end before

Those are "V- Gullet" ends for hex bolts. They've been discussed before. I have them on a lot of my 60's and newer Bonney and BonECon wrenches. If I am not mistaken, Barcalo made some with v-gullets back in the 30's-50's????

Lots of people made them. Wright, Mac, Cornwell, Bonney, Herbrand, Blue Line come to immediate memory. I’m sure there were some others.

Just to clarify- I have seen those on other brands, just not on anything from the Plomb/Proto empire, which is why I found this particular wrench interesting

I found this image online. So, PROTO apparently do/did make them with the V-gullet/hex throat at one time.
ITM is still strange to me. Anyone care to hazard a guess?
A cursory search identifies ITM as International Tool Manufacturing Corp. Perhaps these were made under contract for them?

I don’t think Barcalo made any but Bonney and Cornwell made plenty of them. Some others did too.

Proto screw driver, which was probably used by a friend of mine to stir paint
I also found a big Proto adjustable, shown here with a 6"er for size comparison

....my kids tell me that I need a new phone since my pics ****
I think they're right

Good point. The double grip series. I didn’t think of those due to their unique handle shape. They are shown in the 1937 through 1943 catalogs. They may have been even earlier but the catalogs haven’t yet surfaced.

I wonder if they were the earliest to manufacture a "v-gullet"???

My money would be on Cornwell (1919), then Wright (20's), as RJ alluded to, but open end wrenches with hex milled throats are much older in the hand forged era. It's not a modern innovation so much as something that was common and then rarer in the drop-forged era.

This wrinkle finish 9997 came back home to me today! So excited to have it back. I owned it a for a number of years ago but couldn’t find the lower roller for it so I traded it to a friend. Well a few months back I found a somewhat correct lower roller . Top chest is Proto la and lower roller is my mfd era tool mobile but the shapes are the same for both eras so for now it will suffice 👍. Neither of these are growing on trees around here.

Picture of both together. Ironically I also at one point had 2 mfd era top chests that are actually the more correct top box for this roller but I also traded them to other members on here. Hopefully I will find another some day.

Looks great, Smokeshow69! Time to get the emblem for the top box and fill them!
Top chest never had a front face emblem. No holes or sign of any one ever being there. I have few other Proto la items that never had emblems either. Either they were in a hurry to crank em out or they ran out of emblems.

Pictures of logo area and of the tray. I can’t tell if there once was a logo or not now that I am looking at it. I can’t tell if the spot in the middle is a glue spot or a stain. This box has oil/grease marks all over it from use and I cleaned it as best as I could bring wrinkle finish 😂

Agreed. I didn’t really notice those flat edges but way too many to be coincidental for sure! At one time I did own 2 of these and the other one was spray bombed but you could see the outline of the sticker wording of PROTO on it in that early 60’s script. This one appears to be the earlier emblem plate version

^ I would speculate that the shadow you saw of the "PROTO" lettering was probably burned through the original decal/sticker by UV light.
I see that occasionally when removing the stickers from the tops of lawnmower decks. Pretty much the same kind of thing: adhesive-backed vinyl or plastic decal affixed to a painted surface and then left to the mercy of the elements.

I just picked up the 1/4 drive box on the left which I suspect is a later version than my box on the right.

Someone placed a summit sticker over the logo and when I saw another person start to peel it off, I saw the lettering sticking to the summit sticker.

Ok, as promised, I got my swap meet finds cleaned up. Well, at least the Proto la ones, still have the mfd era and newer to do but these are all shined up. Some cool stuff in here I have been chasing for a while! Highlights include big size combos, hinge/speed handle, valve adjuster and bunch of wrenches/sockets I have been needing. Even found a cool chevron branded dbe! Some of these are duplicates.

There is some good stuff there! Nice find on the speed hinge handle!
Thanks it’s not mint but darn close. I use my plomb version from time to time as well. Rest of the stuff is pretty good as well! I will sort through the best stuff and whatever I don’t need goes into the trade arsenal 👍. Tools cleaned up pretty nicely compared to the bucket of rust I started out with!

I picked up another Proto la tool board in a trade with Bmwrd0. I have been chasing this one for a while and I finally found something worthy of him trading. Panel 62 B- this one is a mixture of 1/4 and 3/8 drive tools and sockets and 1/2 drive tools but no sockets? A little bit odd because I would have thought they would have put 1/2 sockets on here as well but regardless I am super happy I have it! And now I realize I need a ton of 1/4 and 3/8 sockets and accessories as well. My mfd 1/4,3/8 and 1/2 board is way more full than this is😳. If anyone has spares let me know please.

Does Challenger belong in here too?

This punch set is in excellent condition, but one is missing.
