The recall appears to cover most of their plastic handled fire extinguishers (including some that were previously recalled), plus their gauge-less pushbutton extinguishers.

Apparently, they've got an issue with them failing to work. They're on the hook for replacing nearly 40 million extinguishers.

if you're in the US (the recall extends to Canada too), you can get to the forms here:

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I just checked my home and I have two that are on the recall list.

This is a very large recall. Some of the extinguishers go back 20+ years.

Fill out the online form with extinguisher model number, serial number and date code. When you submit the form, they will send a replacement extinguisher and a return box for the old unit.

No cost to you.

Consumer Products Safety Commission has attributed one death of a motorist who died as a result of a failed extinguisher. Hundreds of reports of failed extinguisher to CPSC.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

Kidde's whole marketing campaign and image has been on how "safe" they are, or make us safer I guess you'd say.

My dark humor finds this mildly amusing.....

I think I have a few of those in my house.

On a related note - can anyone recommend a good but affordable "professional" fire extinguisher for a home/basement/garage? I see the Amerex brand around my office so they must be half-decent enough for fire protection companies to sell.

Amerex makes good stuff that's not disposable.

I read somewhere that Kidde extinguishers being replaced by this recall will now have metal valves. That's a good step in the right direction.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I have a number of these, some empty I saved for projects. are they going to replace anything with a valid serial # I wonder? or will we have to send them back?

This could be bigger than the HF class action lawsuit since most of mine came from yard sales and stuff...i'll have to check the scrap bins when I get home.

Oh boy. Only 37.8 million units listed as affected. Plus another 2.7 million in Canada.

I probably have a few. Sigh, more **** to do now.

My understanding that that they will send you a replacement for a unit with a valid serial number, plus packaging for the return of the defective one.

I have one in a box that got stored, and likely 4-5 more around the house. Better start looking I reckon.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

If you care about your home/shed, get REAL fire extinguishers. If the unthinkable happens, you'll get one chance at doing something about it.

Look for a LOCAL guy that services them. Buy them from him. Build a relationship. Have them serviced when they're due.

Ansul is a good one to buy. They are expensive, but much cheaper than something burning up. The suggestion of buying them from a local guy is a good one.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I've heard some bad stuff about Kidde extinguishers but I do have one in the house and the other in the garage.

Whether they are being forced to do it or on their own, it's probably going to kill the company and their bottom line but you have to applaud them for making it right.

In all seriousness, it doesn't matter if the extinguisher works or not if you don't know how to use it properly, you just might matters worse.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I wonder if ones made by Kidde but not with their name on it are covered. I have 3 Kidde and 1 "Fire Control" brand.

I read here on GJ a post from a member who is/was a fire fighter and serviced extinguishers also. It was an interesting post and he indicated which brands were good and which were not so good. It was posted maybe 5-ish years ago, but I read it within the last year.

Less(by far) than one percent is more what I expect.

I guess I'll finally get to be a 1%'er.

I see mine on the list... FA340HD

EDIT: I have mine submitted for recall.

Thanks rlitman.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I replaced some a couple of years ago. Kept the old ones thinking I'd possibly make some kind of fountain out of them. If they're on the list, now I can have additional locations. Better use than a fountain...

Check for the model numbers, if they are new enough get the date code and serial number before you start the forms. Once you have that information, the forms only take minutes.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

**** I think I've thrown away about twenty of them over the years because they lost pressure. I never imagined they were going to be required to warranty them forever. I presumed they all lost pressure after the one year warranty period on purpose so you had to keep buying them.

This is fortunate...I have 5, 3 of which are in need of a recharge.

I had a bit of problem with the website freezing up using Firefox, but Chrome got the job done.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I'll have to check mine, I believe they are all Amerex and Ansul.

Realistically is a kidder from more then 10 years ago still servicible? You are supposed to flip and shake them every year to keep the powder from clumping, and in are commercial environment they have to be services every 10? Years IIRC. I'm a resuming most of these are homeowner owned and pretty much "out of sight, out of mind" suprised kidDE is liable that far back.

Last one I shot off (doing a gage clean out for a widow) spittered and spat a few chunks and locked up. Threw it out and brought her a new one.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

Here's the link to participate in the recall. They needed my name, address, phone, and email, plus the model number, date code, and serial numbers on the extinguishers. Pretty pain free. Replacements are being shipped to arrive in 15-20 business days, it said.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

I'm going to have to check mine. I am almost certain I have two of these hanging in my garage, and a third under the sink in my kitchen. And those suckers are OLD. But have the plastic handle thingy. I almost threw them all away last time I cleaned my garage.

I'm in for three free ones...

I snapped pics with the phone, intend to compile a little spread sheet and work from there. I too need to share this around with the car clubs and at work.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

Thanks rlitman for the heads up. I found out I have two on the list. NUTTSGT is right, get the model # and date code before you start. I needed a magnifying glass to read the info! The online form on the kidde web site is pretty easy to fill out once you have all the information at hand.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I found 3 so far, all 1A10BC's Kidde brand 2 red, 1 white.

their ID guide is ****, the model is listed differently under the UL listing, and my white one has a date code of 1/9/04 according to their documentation but it is less than 2007 so shouldn't even exist.

got one in the camper to check, and 2 at the cabin and several in the scrap to go through yet...

Only the model number and serial number are required fields, the date code is not (when filling out the form on their website)
