Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

Thanks log man. I have a date coded 1991 recall fire extinguisher out in the garage that came with my house when I bought it in 2003. Don't know what they are going to do when I send it back since one of my dogs chewed the plastic handle a little.

Probably put it with the rest of their returns in some landfill in Asia?

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

Thanks OP for posting this. I have one I reported. My daughter volunteers with the Red Cross. The volunteers are the last to get any news, and she helps distribute fire extinguishers to people through one of their programs. So she's checking to see if any of the ones she distributed are affected.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

I think the date range is only used because certain models were produced during that date range.

If you have a plastic handled extinguisher, fill out the form. And they're not asking for them back - use it to practice using a fire extinguisher.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

I don't think you send them back. They didn't ask me to send mine back.

What I read was that they will send you a replacement, with packaging to return the defective one.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

I had half a dozen fairly new fire extinguishers replaced by Kiddie a few years ago because of a recall. I was able to keep the old ones and they sent new ones. I tested two of the recalled extinguishers; one worked and one didn't. So I have the rest of the recalls clearly marked and in places that aren't life or death, with the expectation that they will probably work 50% of the time.

Edit to add: I just called Kiddie to check on a couple of ancient extinguishers I had. Not only were they on the list but the half dozen new replacements I received back in 2015 during the last recall were also on the new recall list. Apparently it is everything with a plastic handle.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

Yeah, thanks for the information. I'll be sharing this with several people.

BTW, someone mentioned Amerex--they are very, very good extinguishers. My BIL's father was the sales manager for the company for many years so I have a few of them. As someone said, they are not disposable--they're quality units.

They have been featured on Jay Leno's Garage, and Amerex, UK has a Royal Warrant, meaning they are the official fire extinguisher of the Queen. They are used at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

Thank you for the heads up! Just check the extinguishers I keep in mine and my wife's cars. Both are being recalled... I'll be checking my home extinguishers tonight.

Scary stuff, stay safe out there!

Shared this on another forum I'm part of and sent something out about it at work.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

Out of 12 extinguishers, only two are Kidde. I thought I was out of the game, though, as mine has the wrong date codes, but the right model #'s. Now I see that the date doesn't matter, so I'll get the form. Thanks.

EDIT: The form DOES ask for a date code.

EDIT EDIT: I blame my computer for this. I should have better reading comprehension. Date code isn't required. They are sending me two new extinguishers.

Mine are not on the recall list but are plastic handles.

Re: Free replacement fire extinguisher

What is the date range?

From the recall: "he recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017,"

It goes on to explain what the codes are, and where to find them. I just bought one of these; it's 10 days newer than the recall date.

Shipping would cost more than the value of having the extinguisher returned.

And if it were scrapped, you can be very certain that the steel would be recovered by shredding and magnetic separation. The other bits would probably be incinerated. All highly mechanized and, yes, probably in Asia.

Re: Kidde fire extinguisher recall

If your model number is not exactly on their list, you may still qualify.

Mine just said KIDDE 110, which is not listed.
I entered the model as KIDDE 1A10BC, which is on my extinguisher under the UL Listing classification, and the claim form was accepted.
Supposed to receive a new extinguisher in 15-20 days.

Re: Kidde fire extinguisher recall

I have a Kidde WJ-412148 and WJ-412149 but don't see them on the list. They look the same and are plastic. Tried calling but just kept getting a repeat to hold on and I would get answered. All of sudden the line went dead though.

Re: Kidde fire extinguisher recall

OP, thanks for the heads-up on this. I probably have close to a dozen fire extinguishers between the house, garage, and storage that I will have to check.

Make sure you are looking at the model number under the UL Listed emblem? It is in a very small font.

I don't think you send them back. They didn't ask me to send mine back.

Have you received a replacement already ?

The on line claim form said the new extinguisher comes with instructions on what to do with the old one.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

Glad to see them being recalled, however, it would be nice to see some relief for those of us that actually had reason to try to use them (attempted to put out a small fire and had 2 out of 2 fail to operate that we're only a few months old) and ended up throwing them out since they were such ****.

Special thanks to the GJ member, who goes by the handle 'creep' for turning me on to Amerex. He is also a professional fireman and also works as a licensed extinguisher technician. See his informative thread here:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245515

I personally don't think I'd want a replacement Kiddie brand extinguisher, even after the recall.

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

entered 3 model numbers, 1 that was from the early 90's took all 3...new extinguishers on the way.....
As far as the comment about not wanting a Replacement Kiddie---
IMO a "Fire Extinguisher that works" is as good as the next one in an Emergency..:FIREdevil

I think I have 10 Kidde extinguishers. I guess we will see how many are on the list.

I have one on the list its an older one without that long number. When filling out the online form it wanted the date. There is none on it. They even state that units before 2007 don’t have a date on it. It won’t accept the online request without a date.

Will try to call Monday.

Maybe clear your browser of cookies and try it again ? I didn't need a date for mine or make sure you entered the model number correctly.

I sent my brother a six-pack as a gift not too long ago. I`ll make sure he checks them out and replaces if needed.

Those might be serial numbers.
Mine was the same format, but started with "HU" then dash and a six digit number.

Doesn't look like my Kidde extinguishers are on the list. That said, gauges say they need service so I'll probably replace them. If nothing else, the recall made me look and notice I was ignoring them for too long.

Well, turns out all of mine are First Alert or other brand. No new freebies here...

You might want to double check. I didn't think mine were on the list either, I don't think the list is in alphabetical or numerical order.

I put "n/a" as the date and it rejected it, but blanking out the date worked ok for me. I have a Fire-Away 110 and selected that as the model, no date, and put in the serial number (HJ-xxxxxx)

I’ll try leaving it blank! It worked!

Re: PSA: Kidde recalling all plastic handled fire extinguishers

I had two under the recall, bought both in ‘93 right after I bought the house. One lost pressure about a year ago, so I bought a replacement (First Alert) for it, discharged in to a garbage bag (worked fine), and tossed it. Other one the gauge still says good pressure. So I called, gave them the info, and a replacement is on the way. Supposed to include packing to return the old one.
