I agree, Leatherman Wave carrier for years and other leathermans too. Amazing things and I can't live without it.

I carry either my benchmade barrage or benchmade bone collector folder everyday.

Benchmade makes some of the most durable, sharpest (and easy to keep sharp), folding knives I've ever used... I've handled or used hundreds of different knives, but as far as folders go, I've never found any folding knife that is more comfortable/versatile/reliable to use than my benchmades.

A close second would be spyderco, but I'm 6'5" with hands to match, and the spyderco's I've used have all had handles that were just a bit too narrow to be as comfortable as the benchmades.

The assisted opening and full auto benchmades have incredibly durable mechanisms, and their axis lock as well as the "apb" (ambidextrous push button) locking mechanisms are second to none. It's hard to go back to a framelock or liner lock after using either.

My barrage has withstood drops of 30+ feet open and closed.

That being said, at work, I've also got an Olfa 9mm break-off razor knife on me, and a Mora fixed blade in the toolbox or on my waist. Different tools for different tasks, but when push comes to shove, the benchmade can do the job of either, in a pinch.

Pocket Knifes ? I've carried one every day I have lived for 50 years. Started when I was 9. Carried it to school every single day. Nobody cared. I rarely lose one. The trick I've learned is never set it down . Either in my hand or my pocket.
I always carry a 3 blade USA made Old Timer. I might break down and buy a Case sometime. But good quality will outlast me.

I'm not a knife guy by any means, but I carry a Lone Wolf Swale. Maybe on the large side if you want something for IN your pocket, but if you like wood trimmed knives, they're great.

Lone Wolf is owned by benchmade and the fit/finish/quality is very good. After I had my first one a month, I bought two more as spares since I liked it so much. They run about $45 online.

All of my working life I carried one or another of several pocket knives: Case, Gerber, Schrade. I still have the Gerber 3" drop point lockback folder that occupied my right pocket for some twenty years, and it is still just as sharp and useful. Others that I liked were a Scrade 3" Old Timer Stockman 3 blade, and a Case 2 blade with a 3" clip point, and a 2-1/2" Sheepsfoot blade. Most of my larger knives were/are fixed blade pieces, but I tend to favor utility over style.

I used to carry the Kershaw Leek, but I wanted something more substantial, so I got a Zero Tolerance (ZT) 350. Assisted open, Made in USA, lifetime warranty. Same family as Kershaw (designed by Ken Onion). It's a beast. I've used it as a hammer on some occasions.

I've heard great things about the Benchmade knives. I've almost bought one on a couple occasions, but I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I love my Spyderco's. Some are even made in Colorado. Most are Japanese. The clip combined with the one handed opening hole is perfect.

X2, I have a plain edge Endura 4, my favorite knife so far. I like Benchmade knives but I don't like to spend $$$ on knives as I have a tendency to lose them. My other edc is a Sheffield folding razor knife.

I've owned a Leatherman for 30 years and a Buck 110 folder for 40 years. Prior to that my EDC was a Schrade Old Timer folder. I'd lost three pocket knives after loosing them when I'd been riding motorcycles. The pocket knife would work it's way out of my pocket and I'd never see it again. With the belt scabbard the knife was never lost like the pocket knife. I also liked the larger form of the folder. It felt better in my hand than a smaller pocket knife and it had more used for my lifestyle than a pocket knife. It was more robust.

I learned quickly that there's a difference between a stainless steel blade and a non stainless high carbon steel blade. Do you require stainless? Stainless doesn't keep it's edge as well as a high carbon blade. From my experience the carbon blade is also more brittle and tips tend to break if the blade is used as a pry tool.

I've warrantied both Buck and Leatherman products at their factory stores. In both cases the process was simple and quick. I'd walk in, show them the product and walk out with a new one. In the case of Leatherman they warrantied my PST with a SuperTool. That was a great upgrade.

Have you browsed any good knife forums for an answer to your question? I like "Blade Forums" to find info on knives I'm interested in.

Lots of good choices out there. I carry a Microtech Ultratech or Emerson P-Sark mostly. Maybe the first question to ask yourself is "can you sharpen your knife properly?" (A dull knife can be dangerous to the user.) If not maybe stay with a razor knife like some here have suggested. I've got scads of those all over the place.

I like this one I bought a few years ago, I has a couple of tools that I use all the time. I wish the flat blade screwdriver was longer & the clip will open bottles. Leatherman C33T.

I have a similar scenario, and find Spydie Endura and Delica way too small for me. The Stretch has a larger handle and fits great, as well as the Gayle Bradley.

I carry one of these with a custom leather case for it that my father handed down to me a couple years back, and he's carried it for a long time probably my whole life. I find it good quality.

Did your friend break the tip using his knife as a prybar? Because thats what it sounds like.

Knives like tools can be a scary slope, to a certain extent you get what you pay for, buy something good quality and it will last a lifetime. Benchmade and spyderco are both high quality brands and preferred by most their main claims to fame are griptilian (benchmade) and paramilitary 2 (spyderco).

I have a Kershaw Blur that I really like. It is on the larger side, but it has a nice grip material on it that keeps it from sliding out of my pocket (I lost an Onion that way) and has a nice point that is more durable than those on the Onion.

Get a knife with a tanto tip. Much harder to break the tip.

Ray

Answered in the first reply - nicely done.

I recommend Emerson CQC-7, or mini, or HD version. All are swell.

They go through periods of being available/not available. Currently it appears the flipper version is available, probably not making the old one anymore. No problem finding one on ebay however.

http://emersonknives.com/shop/knives/cqc-7-the-knives/cqc-7bw-flipper/

I have handled a lot of knives, but only have 2. I had an original CQC7 and now one with the wave feature. Just can't find a reason to replace or carry a knife other than cqc-7 w/wave. I haven't personally "upgraded" to the flipper yet - nor will I unless I lose this knife sometime in my life. Oh, and you can send the knives in every few years for sharpening, bearings, etc - only a few bucks to be back to new.

The silver one is actually identical to my Snap On one. (made by Kershaw)

I carry a small Victorinox Swiss Army knife. Besides the two blades, the bottle opener and corkscrew are darn handy to have.
I do like the previous posts for REAL knives. I used to carry a big no-name pig sticker, but it would frighten my co-workers when I pulled it out to open a package. It was fun though.

I habitually carry a swiss army knife (Victorinox) and a Leatherman Wave which cover the vast majority of job, if I'm out in the woods or might need to do some heavier cutting a Buck 110 goes on the belt as an intermediate step up to a full on fixed blade tool.

I am never more than a couple feet away from this one. It is a Kershaw 1820, aka Needs Work. It is a type of Wharnecliff blade, which I really like. The straight blade is very easy to sharpen. I have had this one for about 3 1/2 years, and I had one just like it but with black handles before this one. 8b05b41738b194ee5ecb9b5b7c40d52d.jpg

Spyderco/Byrd, CRKT and Leatherman for me. I am in search of a real pry-bar (I have Nite Eze check out counter pry bars) which will be something custom made, like in there pictures https://www.google.ca/search?q=edc+prybars&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjmofz5-erMAhWF34MKHW89CikQ_AUIBygB&biw=1366&bih=643

Check out EDC Forum or Prybar Facebook page. Then you can prevent tip damage and then focus the knife on it's primary task - cutting. I like a combination blade as I find myself enjoying serrations.

Invest in a Lansky sharpener and you will have fun maintaining your knife as well as using it!

Schatt&Morgan 3 blade stockman, made in Titusville, PA not cheap but as good as traditional pocket knife as you will find. You'll throw away Case,Buck,Schrade, etc if you ever try one. Tactical style get a Benchmade, if your into fixed blades nothing beats a Randall.

Randall makes beautiful knives. Be prepared to wait the better part of as year for yours to arrive if you decide to order one. Their knives are so well regarded that they are seriously backlogged on orders.

The German made PUMA's are top of the line in my opinion, although the new ones are all made in China now.
