Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I am contemplating a mild makeover of my main wall in the garage. Just waiting for a few pieces to fall into place, and I'll begin the project. In the meantime, I've been reflecting on the changes that have occurred on that wall since we took possession back in November of 2010. I've been perusing old photos and thought I'd share a few to illustrate the progression this part of the garage has undergone over the 3 years.

Starting with pre-possession. Looking back, the state of the finishes in the garage were dreadful when we took possession. I've spent a lot of time, effort, and expense correcting and modifying the hack-job the builder did in there. This photo is obviously pre-drywall, but anyone who has followed this thread knows that considerable work was done by yours truly to finish off the walls.

This photo was taken approximately a year later. Note the flimsy piece of corrugated plastic I installed for my "mat station". Ugh.

This photo marks the beginning of my "painting stripes and pasting decals" obsession. I tried to get fancy with the stripes behind the clock, but the finished product looked like the national flag of some North African/Middle Eastern country. It had to go.

Things progress:

IMG_5445 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

This is my favorite evolutionary step. Painting half the back wall dark grey and installing the TV really made a huge difference to me.

IMG_6308 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

This is the most updated pic I could find. Gone are the decals. The 32" TV got an upgrade to a 42", and my detailing tools are at my disposal.

IMG_9139 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

My plans are now to add some more cabinets, move the stripe up the wall, narrow it a bit and finish a 3' portion of the wall, above the concrete stem, with a white subway tile. I might do an accent stripe of stainless steel tile and I plan on using a dark grout. It should be a month-long project that will begin in a few weeks.

So, I was very impressed with myself for doing my own driveway sealing, but it would appear I didn't actually save the money I thought I had. Went to the mailbox today and received two photo radar speeding tickets equalling my $ savings. Hit one on the way to pick the sealer and one on the way home! See what happens when I try to save a buck, Dubber?

Hahaha, i don't miss those days. Calgary is a freakin' police state for speeding.

Rick:

While researching ideas for garages, I came upon this site. I quickly discovered your thread and was fascinated. It has taken me countless hours since then to go over every one of the 41 pages and save 85 of your pictures. Whew! I thought it only fair to reserve my first post for you.

First, let me say that your garage is a world-class model worthy of any book I've seen on garages. It is pure inspiration and full of ideas of what is possible. Thanks for the inspiration.

Personally, I could never hope to duplicate an environment like yours simply because of the cost. I'm sure you have spend more money on garage renovations and equipment that you did on the rest of your house interior put together. More power to you. I am in awe of how understanding your wife must be. For me, after more than a year of renovating our house and landscaping outside, I can turn the majority of my attention for 2014 on the garage. Looking forward to it. But with our reno budget shot, the challenge is how much can I do, and how good can I make it, with just a small budget. But I have to wait until Spring now, since the garage is uninsulated and unheated.

Again thanks for the inspiration. If it wasn't for your world-class garage, what would we shoot for? It's a bonus that you're in Canada to boot!

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Well, not sure I know quite where to start. Thanks so much for the very kind words. I'm glad you find inspiration in the blood, sweat, tears (& money) that went into the garage. Indeed, my wife is very accommodating and supportive of my passions. Prior to owning this home, we lived overseas for a number of years and she supported my obsession with Oakley products. I amassed a pretty substantial collection over the years. Since being back in Canada, I have let go of some prized pieces and they have helped finance a good portion of my garage projects. She's a little less impressed with the amount of time I spend fussing about, but she has her hobbies too so it all works out pretty good.

The rest of our house is pretty much done apart from a few furnishings we can never seem to find. At some point in the next 2 or 3 years we will be developing the basement so I suspect the garage will see a dramatic decrease in the amount of time it gets from me.

I'd be keen to hear more about what you are working with. I am assuming it's somewhere in the double-range. Feel free to shoot me any questions as you set your sights on your own space. If you are sticking with a modest budget, paint is your friend. I love painting. In fact, I have a few ideas that I'm knocking around in my head at the moment.

Thanks again for the kind words. They are appreciated.

Starting my project on the back (front?) wall of the garage. First step is to paint out the red stripe. My cabinets will be taking over this space and a new stripe (see signature) will go a bit higher up the wall.

Not gonna lie, I'm considering switching out the red Free Flow tiles for Royal Blue and redoing all the stripes in blue.

I might be able to give those red tiles a home if you decide to go for it. I've been planning to complete the flooring in my garage and want to use some free flow tiles as there is a floor drain in that part.

But, what if our next car is red? lol

I'll let you know if I go in the blue direction. My wife may kill me if I do. If you don't hear from me in a month or two, she did the deed.

My wife is pretty much OK with whatever I do with the garage so long as it does not affect her ability to park her car inside. It's my truck's parking space that I want to finish off now so no concern to her.

My wife is pretty much OK with whatever I do as long as it doesn't seem like a huge waste of money! I'll see what kind of cost RaceDeck is talking and go from there. In the meantime, I'm playing around with my scheme for the back wall:

BEFORE:

This is the direction I'm heading. The lower portion of the wall will be tiled with white 3x6 subway tile with charcoal grout. I'll rehang my detailing tools using the bars.

that does look amazing. what are you using for the Audi font? stenciling and painting, or using decals?

Rick, I'm digging the new look (no surprise).

The audi and the emblem on the bottom with the red stripe on the left and the blue on the right really finishes it well.

Do it! You know the thought will fester inside you until you do it :)

Fester? Inside me? Never! LOL

I am playing with changing up the stripe scheme to either of these. One requires less labour so I'm learning towards it. I like the way the red and blue go together so I'm 99% sure I will be sticking with the red floor accent band.

I scored a new decal off eBay (vorsprung) and I'll beef it up with some custom paint touches. I am in the process of getting the guy who cut the Audi and Kia raised letters to do me a "SQ5" that will finish off the blue band on top of the cabinets. I think this is going to be one of those jobs that will take time since a few pieces have to fall into place. But, I like the process so that's not such a big deal.

Thanks for the interest guys.

It looks like you're going to need a few more coats to cover up the old stripe/trim on the wall, because I can still see them there. And if I can see them, then the king of OCD (yes you Rick) can see them, and that just won't do. :)

Oh, don't you worry your pretty little head. I did a final coat last night but didn't think a photo would be that interesting to you guys. The real sad part is it will all be covered by the bank of cabinets anyway, but I couldn't live with the thought of the stripe being there!

I think your garage gives me purpose to keep changing mine, haha. I show my wife yours so she knows that I'm not done yet, lol.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Why can't RaceDeck just make tiles that change colours? I wish they'd stop being so lazy over there.

I may get a sample of their royal blue sent to me. It just looks a bit bright for my tastes. the Estoril blue on our new car is quite dark.

It's a slippery slope my man. A very slippery slope!

Thanks for posting the pics of your 77 CDV although that last one hurts to look at. I am guessing you may have learned a lesson about understeer in slippery conditions. It looks like it was a nice example, hopefully someone saved it.

I used some blue tiles in my bike parking space (solid, not free flow, but the colour should be the same), and they are a brighter blue. They were perfect though for my BMW logo theme. :)

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on it. I'm busy making some "necessary" changes in anticipation of the arrival of my new car at the end of the month. A few more days and I should be able to post up some new pics that will surely send ripples throughout the garage community!

I'm glad you added quotes to that :) I laughed out loud for sure.

I was laughing when I read that too dubber! :lol_hitti

The other thought that came to my mind was.. I wonder if Rick will have to "making some "necessary" changes" every time he buys a new car? ;)

Yup, life will be a lot simpler. Truth be told, I was very close (even had some money down) on a 2014 S4 in the same Estoril blue color as the SQ5, but came to my senses.
