Progress pics

Retired my Craftsman 6" sander after running out of sandpaper and stores don't carry it anymore. Left half was done with the Craftsman, right half done with a new Dewalt DWE6401DS. I should have purchased this earlier as the hook & loop system is much better than a disc retained only by a center nut.

Progress pics 10/20:

Finished scraping, sanding and caulking all the vertical tongue & grove seams. The siding on the door and to left and right of the door is different from the sides, rear and above the door. Same width planks, just has an extra machined decorative grove/bead (beadboard I think it's called).

Started priming. Tried to get "Zinsser Cover Stain Primer", but apparently it's been banned in CT (some new EPA thing I think)

(pic linked to HD)

So I ended up with "Zinsser Cover Stain Primer Low VOC" which is quite different to work with. It's like painting with molasses. Very time consuming to brush on - rolling works better. It's OK for this shed as it helps fill in some of the weathered grain erosion groves and cracks, but I wouldn't want to use it anywhere else.

The original versions in Kilz and Zinsser were really good but environmental pressure has forced the reformulation. I'm curious what was actually changed relative to the original zinc oxide/shellac.

You're not cold yet? Low 40''s overnight is warm here lately.
Paint cans state not to apply under 40°F. I was painting Sunday, but way too windy. Kept getting leaves in the paint. Hard to get decent painting weather this summer/fall. Upcoming weekend is a bust due to a Nor'easter.

So I tried this DAP Latex Window Glazing in a tube. Absolutely the worst product I've ever used. It's like glazing with acrylic caulk at twice the price. Windows are in pretty sad shape to start with, so not a huge deal. I don't have time to properly restore them right now. May just replace them in the future when I have nothing better to do.

On the up-side, when I went to return the tube that I hadn't opened (I purchased 2) I complained about how bad this product is and HD refunded me for both tubes.

Been too busy with life to get much done. Almost finished. Still need to restore the door latch mechanism and put the final row of cedar shingles on. Made new vertical sliding boards attached to the door with stainless steel carriage bolts, washers and wing-nuts. Still need to attach a knob to grab onto for each board as it was originally. Most importantly, installed the new thermometer.

This is one of two of my fav threads that I can't see the pics. All there is, is a big white blank spot. No icon, no URL. nothing :( But it sounds like you've been very busy.

This makes no sense to me. I have my own domain and host my own pictures.

Here are the direct links:

Does that work?

I'm 50/50 on my color choice. It's BM Dove white with white trim. I kinda liked it better all pure white, but thought a slight tint would work better with the red cedar.

Do you happen to be using internet explorer? If so upgrade Chrome. Everything will work much better.

This has come out great. I have not ever commented on your build but I have followed along. You truly had a vision for your end result and I think you achieved it. I second that it is good for at least 50+ more years.

Nope, been using Chrome for quite a while now. Only two threads I can't see the pictures on.
Do you see pictures when you click the individual links I posted in post #460 (link)?

I get this when I search your issue:

Click the Chrome menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of the browser.
Select Settings.
Click "Settings" on the left and then "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the page.
In the Privacy section, click Content Settings.
In the Images section, click "Show all images (recommended)".
Click Done.

Followed to that section and it was already set to "Show All". Thanks for trying.

"Killing Time in a Small 2 Car Garage" is the other. I wonder why it's only these two that won't play nice with me? And it was the same with my last computer.

What a great thread! Thanks for posting all the pics - it is fascinating to go through. Sorry if I missed it, but what is the story behind the mustang (?) behind the building? Looks like it has been there for quite a while!

porschen - I don't think I've posted anything about the Mustangs. Nature is reclaiming them. 72 302 coupe and 73 351W coupe. The intent when I purchased them 35 years ago was for parts, but that doesn't work real well in New England unless they're stored inside. I have 3 more 72-73s (2 coupes & a Mach1) in various stages of disrepair at my residence.

As long as people "link" photos, there can be issues. Best way that works 100% of the time is by uploading the photos to GJ. You can then delete them from your computer and they will always be on GJ.

It's too bad when I look at older pages from any threads and the pics are gone because they were linked.....like even your own domain. The day your own domain is no longer, the pics are gone.

Everyone should always upload and pics will always show

Yeah, I know how that goes. Hopefully nature doesn't reclaim them too quickly - from the pics I saw, the one closest to the garage doesn't look too bad yet.

Wow, looks good. A ton of work. I am sure you posted this, but what was the reason for restoring vs knocking down? And I just caught towards the end this is a rental property not, your primary or second home. Again, hats off for a great job especially given you don’t even live there. I don’t think I would have had the patience.

Merbesfield - I did everything backwards. I was just going to do a quick roof fix and leave it at that. After hitting my head a dozen times on the garage door that didn't open all the way I started analyzing what was wrong with the structure. If I tore it down I'd have to get a permit, they'd probably make me relocate it away from the septic tank and my taxes would go up.

Once I realized that the building needed to be lifted I got excited. I have a second story heated sun-porch attached to my residence with a room underneath that has major structural issues - which will require a similar lifting process. The shed was an excellent learning experience and helped justify the $800 lifting shore purchase.

I'm sure some day I'll end up ripping the whole roof off the shed, but that can wait for now.

Well I can certainly understand, but I wouldn’t say backwards. Have to have a good foundation before all else. Now you do. I can very much relate as I have an old guest cabin that is in need of major restoration, but first thing must be the foundation. So I throughly enjoyed seeing how you did it. It made me think about hiring someone vs DIY I am not sure I am up to the task mentally or physically. $800 in cost though is strong motivation.

What a great job you did of saving this garage. You certainly should be proud of all the effort and hard work you did. Mad skills.
