Strange socket sets as promised.........but, sorry............it's late.............only 1 pic for now..............more tomorrow.

Something called "Open End Ratchet Wrenches".........????

Haven't seen them in any tool catalogs.

SocketSetCasesLidsClosed.jpg

Good luck finding a set today. Those were sold in the 40's or 50's and the only reference I have ever seen to them was an old ad in a vintage Popular mechanics magazine from the day. the TAC stood for something like Tube Appliance Corporation, or something strange like that.

I have most of a set of those. If you open this link http://www.harryepstein.com/basementdeals.htm and scroll down the page to "Ratcheting Crowfeet" you will see what the box marked "TAC" once contained.

So how much will you need for the box? :bounce:

BTW: Here is my set of them, they are up in the top right corner of the pic.

Aside from a pic in their old ad, those are the first I have ever laid eyes on. Where on earth did you find them? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Impulse buy on eBay 8 years ago, IIRC.

A more accurate term might be "Flare Nut Ratcheting Sockets" ? They allow the line to pass through like the low clearance Snap-On sets using different socket sizes. These crows feet style ratchets are not reversible. Much like the prevalent female style ratchets of their day, you have to flip them over to change direction. The ratchet heads aren't very stout, I would use a regular line/flare nut wrench to break the fitting loose.

The smaller set has a 1/4" drive breaker bar stamped Williams, and has inserts for ratcheting 3/8" and 1/2" drive sockets. The larger set has a TAS stamped 3/8" drive breaker bar, but only a 1/2" drive insert.

LargerSetLidOpenSocketOnRatchet.jpg

Think I'll classify one as a 1/2" ratchet and the other as a 3/8" drive ratchet............:)

('HOUND's running ratchet total, this thread: 219 1/2" Drives, 137 3/8" Drives, 48 1/4" Drives, 404 Overall/All Sizes. Number needed to surpass overall/all sizes ratchet total of 500: 97. )

Time to count the 3/4 drives................

6MixedBrandsBacksideRevised.jpg

PlombProto3QuarterDriveSetOpenCase.jpg

Left to Right............

1) Blackhawk (Antique, female drive, no reversing lever, turn ratchet over to change direction.... reminds of the 1920's Snap-On 1/2" drive ratchets, only bigger)
2) Armstrong (New, has the Proto style head)
3) S-K
4) Snap-On (the bar on it seems to be 4 feet long)
5) Craftsman (New, has that Snap-On style head like some of the Craftsman ratchets from the 40s/50s, but with quick release)
6) Mac (ratchet head attachment, put it on the 3/4" drive Craftsman breaker bar to show it off)
7) Plomb (in the bottom pic, forgot about it while taking the 3/4" drive group shot, that is a vintage Plomb set, with only the upper right hand 5 sockets in the photo being Proto)

Up next............some 1" drive stuff............

('HOUND's running ratchet total, this thread: 7 3/4" Drives, 219 1/2" Drives, 137 3/8" Drives, 48 1/4" Drives, 411 Overall/All Sizes. Number needed to surpass overall/all sizes ratchet total of 500: 90. )

I need to get a pic of the one you likely don't have. It's an old Bonney ratchet from my grandfather, who was a Chrysler mechanic. They gave service awards with gold-like plated tools, most of which were Bonney tools.

Moparhound,
I do not know about your math but my math shows only 89 are needed to reach 500:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

quick question from a newbie....

I have this rachet... can anyone tell me what year it is? I can also buy another one like it.... what do you think?

Basically it's a 5/8 drive ratchet with original drive lug. The ratchet is 18 inches long, and has the marking OKD 11 stamped into the head. I'm lead to believe it's from the 1920's... anyone know?

My grandfather was a mechanic for 30 some years at Chrysler. Here are more pics of the tools I inherited when he passed away. Many of the brands I haven't heard of, still researching them all! Each tool set came in it's own roll pouch. Here is a few samples (partial sets, for clarity)

One of these days I'll drag all of them out and snap some more pics. I ended up getting half his tools stash, as other family members picked it over as well. They are definitely neat, although I wish the gold finish was in better shape.

Yeah the Mustang's (67 and 68 I believe) came with 4-piston kelsey-hayes calipers. It seems the tool division had bought Bonney, which explains why most of the other Chrysler tools I have are Bonney brand...like the ratchet http://alloy-artifacts.com/totw_locrite_flare_box_wrench.html

would love to see all the pics! I didn't know Kelsey-Hayes bought all the tool brands,I worked at a Kelsey-Hayes plant as a line mechanic until it closed.

I didn't know they had tools either, and really didn't notice that these line wrenches had that on them until I snapped the pics tonight :(

Well, we sank to page 5..........but the views are up to 11,579........................marching on................:bounce:

Dug up a couple of ratchets before we get to the 1" drive stuff...................

9ThirtySecondsDriveSetWithRatche-1.jpg

Left to right:

Snap-On 9/32" drive set (Vintage 1939, some pieces date '37 and '38, but most '39, have decent shine for their age)

Snap-On 1/4" drive ratcheting nut driver (Has forward, reverse, and a "locked" postition on the selector. Don't know if the shaft interchanges to allow it to become a ratcheting screwdriver???)

Guess I'll create a new category for the 9/32" drive socket set, and add 1 to the 1/4" ratchets...................:)

('HOUND's running ratchet total, this thread: 7 3/4" Drives, 219 1/2" Drives, 137 3/8" Drives, 1 9/32" Drive, 49 1/4" Drives, 413 Overall/All Sizes. Number needed to surpass overall/all sizes ratchet total of 500: 88. )

Now for the 1" drive stuff...................

Three1InchDriveRatchets.jpg

1/4" Drive Snap-On ratchet being shown to give a sense of scale, that is a Proto 3/4" to 1" adaptor beside it.

Left to right:

1) Lowell Wrench Co., Worcester MA No. 3 (Female drive, guessing it is from the 30's??? Has a later model Proto male plug in it, don't know what the adjustment thingy is in the end of the handle??? Looks like the handle was made anticipating a cheater pipe, or some type of handle was meant to be used???)

2) Snap-On L73C Ratchet Head (bought the handle for it, I thought, but it was too small in diameter)

3) Snap-On L673 Ratchet Head Adaptor (being shown with a L112E Snap-On 3/4" Drive breaker bar head with a Snap-On GLA72A 3/4" to 1" adaptor, the breaker bar handle is a seemingly 4 foot long Snap-On L72RL)

Sadly :( , in a moment of weakness, I traded my 1" drive Made In U.S.A. socket set to a relative who needed it for his farm equipment. Working on cars I hadn't used any of them, so it made sense at the time. He has been glad to have it, using it on several occasions. Think I may have a stray 1" drive impact socket or 2 laying around.

Now, up next, onto the new arrivals!!! All this ratchet picture taking stoked the old dormant TOOLHOUND! fire......................... :3gears::3gears::3gears:

Overlooked this sweet Snap-On Racing red hard handled 1/4" drive with the crossed checkered flags...............will end up subtracting it back off (along with some other ratchets in the classifieds that have departed since this thread began)............little ratchet will be headed to Hawaii to a new home shortly:

Pictures of several new arrival ratchet lots have been taken :bounce: ...........just a matter of processing the pictures and getting the text together for the posts......

Wish I could, if it were practical. Unfortunately, dragging them all back out from the various boxes would be too time consuming. Do hope to get all the pic's together for one post, or maybe one thread by itself.
