I am quite sure that klein makes their own screwdrivers/nutdrivers regardless of the similarity to Pratt Read... besides, is Ideal not a competitor to Klein? Imagine Pratt Read (now under Ideal) making screwdrivers for the competitor... I don't think so in this case. Besides, Klein's website does seem to indicate they have their own factory for these tools. I think the klein drivers of the past (with the older style rubber grips) were top notch.

The ones now however, although they do fit very nicely, seem to get mangled very quickly during accidental cam-outs, in relation to the older models. The new journeyman series drivers, while attractive in my opinion and comfortable are also prone to this issue. I had a new one take some serious damage during the first cam-out. Sure, cam-outs can and will hurt any driver eventually but my experience is that the newer ones seem especially brittle. Hopefully that will improve because they used to be my favorite screwdrivers. I still have the first two that I bought like 10 years ago in good, usable condition, even though they have usually been my go-to set.

Here is the Link to Pratt Read Distributor we had at GJ, He claims that PR made the Screwdriver Cushion Grips for Klein. You cant look at the Cushioned Grip Pratt Reads and tell me that they are not the OEM for the Kleins. After reading the Post it could be that they only make the Grips and not the Insert.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37512

Closeup pics of the Prat Read Cushion Grips

Kleins Nut driver version with the same cushion Grip

Pratt Read Nut driver set

also dont forget the home depot husky pro screwdrivers are marked WF i think and are dead ringers for kliens just red instead of yellow

ok not exactly the same but close enough for me think the same oem

I have owned a set of phillips and slotted Wiha MicroFinish Heavy Duty screwdrivers for 6 years. The tips, MicroFinish handle material (been exposed to oil), and metal cap (been struck with a hammer various times) have all been durable. This heavy duty model also has a hex bolster.

Here is a link to these Wiha screwdrivers on WihaTools' website:

Klein grip it screwdrivers are made in germany. They have carpet like texture on three sides similar to matcos. They are triangular shape. Come in 5 piece set #1 ph, #2 ph, cabinet slotted, medium slotted, large slotted. Both med slotted and large slotted have round shaft like others but with hex shank at handle for wrench to add additional torque.

Not cheapest site prolly but good for picture.
http://www.acetoolonline.com/Klein-85090-Screwdriver-Set-Assortment-w-Pouch-p/kle-85090.htm

The tips are great super strong and bite as good as any. They are alittle on the short side except the large slotted is nice length.

Using as chisel driver is big no no. Handle material fairly soft, mushrooms under hammer strike on first blow.

As screwdriver they are great only complaint is wish #2 ph was inch longer. Also wish klein made matching #3 ph to make 6 pc set.

Oh and not to upset anyone, but Im not a fan of the round handle slide over cushion grip klein screw/nut drivers, not sure about the tips but handle with cushion seemed to slip and feel mushy under high torque. I do believe they handle hammer blows fairly well even as though they arent designed with full through shank.

Ideal didnt aquire Pratt Read till April of 2010, The Information i was quoting was from back in 2009 and from a Distributor of Pratt Read. Pratt Read is still a subsidiary of Ideal so its feasible they are still making the Handles for Klein. I fired a email off to Klein maybe they will shed some light.

Monte, of all the drivers you displayed in your video, what is your go to driver?

The Pb swiss multicraft with bolster that Monte displayed is my #1 choice, i love the way they feel in the hand and the craftsmanship in the product is superb. I realize they are hard to come by in the states, but i took full advantage of the amazon swiss madness and have enough screwdrivers to last me a lifetime. I still may purchase those wera chisel drivers just because i am an addict.
Side note, i have some old klein drivers { 10 years i guess }that have performed well and never given me a problem or failed in any way. I am indifferent about them, but they are fine.

those are most likely made by witte, who is the oem for matco, napa and cornwell

Witte ProTop Plus are some really great looking drivers. I am going to be searching for those now. I have a MaxPro but find the handle a bit odd.

Those Wiha linked above are seriously stout. You'll have those the rest of your life.

Blue Dog, I tried the PB SWiss but couldn't get over the stink. What an olefactory overload. Kind of like going in the bathroom at a Texaco station.

I know it is technically possible... I just kind of doubt it. Then again who knows, it'll be interesting to hear what Klein says...

I guess it's like a wife that nags at you all the time, i just tune it out with out ever thinking about it. Honestly, the smell debate over screwdrivers has become funny at this point, i even went to the garage and stuck a swiss driver right up my nose to see what everyone is complaining about, cut my nostril but did not smell a thing. Did i put the wrong end in my nose?

I'd have to guess.... yes :lol_hitti

My suggestion is to put the screwdriver handle of the pb swiss driver by your wife's nose while she's sleeping.. if she wakes up... then you are in the dog-house... and they stink. If not, well at least you don't need to keep shoving stuff up your nose for a definitive answer

The "Wurth" screwdrivers shown @ 4:33 in the video. Basically a hybrid of the "Felo 550" series and the "Felo Ergonic"

I also like the Hazet screwdrivers shown @ 2:47 in the Video very much.
I prefer smaller sized screwdriver handles.

WARNING! - This thread is dangerous. It has given me screwdriver envy and caused me to go buy a new set of Wera's based on lust alone! (Don't tell the wife)

My Kleins are the toughest I have ever owned. If you plan on using them as a chisel these are the ones. I do not like my C-man pros. The Proto screwdrivers that are Red and Dark gray are very good (made in England). My favorites are my Witte Protop Plus, the fit is excellent and they are very comfortable. For daily use I carry both the Kleins and Witte.

GJ will do that to ya... I've bought certain tools because of this thread that I have not even used yet, although I probably will at some point in the not too distant future.

Monte, that last video just sold me on the "new" Wera chiseldrivers. When you say "new", how new are we talking? Are US retailers going to have these "new" drivers in stock or the "old" drivers.

The new drivers were announced in june 2009 and should be available in the US soon (?) The part number for the new set is 932 S/6 I looked at chads + Amazon.com but didn´t see it, maybe email Chads and ask them about the new set ?

"new chiseldrivers" :D

i dunno , they don´t have a special name. The part number is only different (a "S" is added to the part/model numbers)

If you forget the hex bolster that your asking for, them try the Witte Pro Top Plus. You won't need the bolster with these. The grip you will get with these handles will negate the need for bolsters. The fit on the screwdrivers tips are next to none. NO camout.

Thanks for the heads up Monte. I was going to buy some of the original chiseldrivers, guess I'll wait till I find the "new" version.

Does the striking cap seem suitable or could you see a hammer starting to mushroom the cap, rendering the square drive useless?

This seems to be the second most loved screwdriver but they cannot be found:headscrat

Where do you get them?

I was just skimming over this topic and was thinking I seen some WERA'S somewhere for sale, then I remembered they are in the 2010-2011 SEARS tool catalog. I guess you order them thru SEARS. My .02 centagos worth

The square drive is slightly recessed, there is also a "ring" which you strike. So it should take a while until it mushroom too badly. Or use a recoiless soft face hammer.

Thanks. That seems to be the only source but the prices are at Snap-on levels.

Does anyone know whether the Matco Screwdrivers are the ProtopPlus or the MaxProPlus?

Is the ProtopPlus just the Protop (which I find a little small in the handle) plus the flocking?

Like those Matco's shown above, are they the ProtopPlus or the MaxProPlus?

Question:

To get a Matco tool warrantied does one have to track down a Matco dealer or does Matco offer mail in service like Snap-on does for its internet customers?

I would personally strongly recommend, as Monte mentioned, that you use a soft face hammer when striking the rear of any screwdriver. Yeah... some people don't like to carry those around in addition to their regular hammer but if you want the screwdriver to last longer and still look halfway decent, I personally wouldn't whack the screwdriver with a regular hammer - even if it has been designed to withstand it to a certain extent.

Actually, even striking a wood chisel with a soft face, or wooden mallet I find is preferable...

Anyone know what an decent price is on a Wera 6 piece Chisel Driver set? A local store is selling sets for $52.00 I thought that was kind of high what do you guy's think? They also have the Wera SS 6 piece sets for $58.00. I have never come across them in a retail store in my area. It's the type of place where if you ask they will do better on the price.
