Reversing switch help needed.

I am trying to set my lathe up with the ability to reverse the electric motor. The motor is an AO Smith aka Century electric Split phase 110V motor that has provisions to reverse directions by swapping two wires.

Here's a link to the catalog page. I have been all over the Century website looking for more wiring info, but this is not a current PN motor and there is no additional info listed on it anywhere. The model is F670A.

I wired up a DPDT swicth to reverse directions, but this wiring only affects the start winding. I still need to run a standard power switch to the motor, there is no way to power everything through the DPDT switch.

If I am thinking of this correctly, I need effectively a tandem or dual circuit DPDT switch, or a SPST/DPDT combo switch. All of the drum switches I have looked at do not seem to have this functionality.

Anybody have any thoughts or ideas?

Single phase reversing drum switch.

Should do you good.

If you only use a DPDT switch, then you need to manually switch off the run winding before operating your DPDT reversing switch.

You can do everything with a drum switch as it also contains a SPST switch to control the run winding.

Have a look at this description...

http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/16941-drum-switch-wiring-diagram Post #3.

Then look at diagram Fig 1A and renumber the terminals 1-3 down on the LHS and 4-6 on the right to agree with the above description. This will do it. You can verify the action of the drum switch with a test light before installation, if you are physically unable to to see the actual internal switch action.

I have motors wired both with the manual control and with drum switches and both work OK.

Be aware that on a single phase motor, there will be no reverse until the internal motor start switch snaps shut after power is killed to the motor initially. Switching to reverse while the motor is running does nothing. I have this setup on my drill press, using a standard 4 way house switch for a reverser. A 3 phase motor will plug reverse without waiting.

Wow, you guys rock. Thanks for the response. Lots of reading to do. all the drum switch stuff I looked at did not appear to have any spst or spdt capability. And of course searching the interwebs for what my mechanical engineering brain thinks it should be called was not very fruitful.

Everything should be carbureted, and I used to do engine calibration! ;)

I bought a damaged Dayton drill press from Grainger. It had fallen on the front of the head and smashed the on/off switch. I discovered the motor was reversible (but Dayton had not wired it for reversing) and so I got a Square D drum switch from a electrician neighbor, he was happy to get rid of it, and set about wiring it up. I think it took seven wires between the motor and switch to make it work on this setup.

Using the terminal connection diagram inside the switch cover, lower far right, and the very far left motor diagram, I wired it as follows.

The power cord runs into the drum switch, and white line in turns around and runs to white line out to term 4 of the motor. It is not connected to the drum switch terminals.

On sw term 1 is the black from the motor

On sw term 3 is the wire from motor term 5

On sw term 5 is the black line in from the power cord

On sw term 2 is the wire from motor term 1

On sw term 4 is the red from the motor

On sw term 6 is the black line out to term 1 on the motor

That is what I have written down in a note in the drill press manual. I need to verify this, but it is raining out and I don't feel like getting wet to go out to the shop and remove the motor terminal cover. Will do that tomorrow.

Thanks all, just snagged a Dayton off ebay for $26. More to follow when it gets here.
