Ridgid 4x vs Ridgid Gen5x - Noticible enough difference?

Hello Everyone,

I am bad in need of some new cordless tools. Had my Ryobi stuff for a while and the batteries just don't hold enough charge to mess with. Typically I just use corded drills and saws etc so I don't have to bother with them, but that isn't very convenient. I do a considerable amount of weekend carpentry and (deer stands, duck blinds, deck building etc). Certainly not a daily carpenter but I would like a decent set that will last.

After doing a lot of searching and over thinking I believe I have decided to get into the Ridgid platform. Primary needs are the drill, impact and reciprocating saw. Not the biggest fan of cordless circular saws but could certainly benefit from them from time to time.

So my question is - Would I really notice or regret not waiting for a sale on the Gen5x kits (Drill, Impact, Circ and or reciprocating saw)? I can pick up a set (Drill, Impact, Circ) of the X4 stuff now with a 2ah battery and a 4ah for about $240 with tax. Right before I bought them though I saw the crazy sales I missed on the brushless stuff earlier this year, and it gave me pause.

I don't mind waiting a couple months if that means scoring a brushless set for the same price (plus it has the bigger saw). I don't really want to spend any more than that amount though to upgrade. So I guess the second question would be - Do you think the prices will go back down to what they were earlier this year for the Gen5x.

Sorry for the ramble lol, just wanted to make sure it made sense.

Thanks

If you are dead set on moving to Ridgid, I would go for gen5x.

The 5pc gen5x set was just on "sale" right now but I would venture to guess that nothing major is coming from Ridgid in the near future.

That being said, I would wait until closer to the holidays. There will likely be a black friday/christmas special. I got a killer deal on two brushless gen5x sets, sold an extra tool and extra charger and made out in the shade.

Yes, its almost guaranteed that HD will run a sale on the Ridgid X5 and X4 sets for the holiday season.

You will also see a noticeable difference between the two. Seems you do enough work to justify getting a better set?

But its worth looking into replacing your Ryobi batteries with better Lithium Ion chemistry.

Oh, and while Ridgid is a decent drill its really only worth buying into if you submit the proper paperwork for the Lifetime Warranty.

I have both X4 and 5. The X5 stuff is great and worth waiting for in my opinion. Watch the Black Friday stuff as it will start to drop between Christmas and New Years.

That said, I have also built an adapter to use my old Dewalt tools with the Ridgid batteries. I also plan to build one for my Ryobi hedge trimmer, having purchased the parts, but not yet found the time to build it.

I sold my x4 stuff and bought the gen5 set when it was on sale $100 off plus used a 10% mover coupon plus got $44 rebate from the 11% match. I'm happy with them for sure. Noticeable difference in the impact. The 3 speed toggle is a plus as well. Accidentally had it set on 3 while putting in a wood fence gate it almost instantly plowed a deck screw threw the picket and half way through the 2x4, don't remember my x4 being able to do something like that as quickly. Worth the wait or even buying now and using the 11% match and 10% coupon if the rebate is still running.

Appreciate the input!

In regards to the Ryobi Batteries - My first line of thought was to upgrade to the new battery style but when I started looking at the prices for them plus a new charger, it just made sense to buy a better tool with new batteries for the same price range.

Additionally I have seen several folks that have made some really neat "adapters" to run the ryobi stuff off a ridgid battery. I just seems like a no brainer to either make or buy something like that

I think you'll notice a difference between the two. However, if you aren't using them professionally I don't think the difference is likely worth it.

P.S. There isn't any reason you can't keep using the Ryobi stuff too.

rslaback - You are the one responsible for my line of thinking to changing to the ridgid platform. Before I saw your awesome adapter thread about a week ago when browsing the forum, I was just going to buy new ryobi batteries because I hated the fact that I was going to just give up on the collection of Ryobi stuff I had. Then I saw your adapter and I was really excited.

Thank you for sharing that! Im sure a lot of people benefit from the idea!

What is the 11% match, 10% coupon? And is the rebate shown at Home Depot or how would i know if its still going?

Thanks!

Not sure about the 10% coupon but the 11% rebate match is a program that home depot has in regions that have Menards near by. Menards frequently does a 11% rebate on everything
