I think someone scabbed that gear rack onto the top ring. Look closer at the lower ring; doesn't the gear rack float in a groove in the lower ring? it should do the same on the upper ring. This is so you can loosen just the table clamp (another scabbed up job on yours...) and swing the table around. Somewhat difficult to do with all the rust, gunge, and paint left by the PO on the column in that area.

If the gear rack is missing the small step needed to engage the upper ring, just re-grind a new one.

The table itself is in sort of tough shape, but it IS the larger industrial table. I'd love to get one that size with the lift for mine.

That's a nice box for drill storage! Do you have the cover, or can you make one?

Hmm even with the arc of shame, that old table maybe could be used on the back side of the floor press (Or low on the front) as a shelf for the tool box!

The rings both look smooth, no grooves top or bottom. It just looks like the weld broke on the top ring :dunno: The arc is not as bad if you put a drill press vise over it, it just hurts to look at now :(

I don't have the front cover for the box, I just got that box in the mail today from Lkdelta. It is not marked anywhere, if I could see a picture, I could replicate it. I do have an idea how it should look and latch so once I finish my box pan brake restore, I will bend one up.

Something doesn't seem kosher here; Can you lock the table, loosen the lower ring, and see how it separates from the gear rack?

There is a gap between the gear rack and the lower ring, it's not resting on it. The table locks with the allen wrench scab job. The gear works like butter, lifts and lowers the table easily. If this table were 17.5" wide or less, I would have used it on the bench model for sure, it's just too wide.

also, I changed a damaged wire in the 1/2 hp motor I mentioned earlier, I think it was the culprit of sparks. The rest of the motor looks great, I cleaned the armature and windings and will change the bearings when I find replacements, seems they are rough at one point on both of them. I may have a good motor here.

OK I think I know what is going on with the rings and gear:

Your rack is a thicker bar than mine, and the mfg of mine used the method I described to keep the bar from losing contact with the retention ring, but still be able to rotate within it.

Your rack won't flex the way my thinner rack can (Shorter and thicker), so the groove isn't needed.

I'd grind that top bar section flat on top (and the old weld off the sides and outer face) and remove the top ring and flip it over to use the good side, and sand it (and the bottom ring) smooth (sheet of wet or dry on a nice flat surface) so the bar can slide sideways easily. The rings are there, top and bottom, so the rack has something to push against.

Get the column cleaned up, and lightly oiled as well as the re-freshened surfaces of the rings. I think at that point when you unlock the table you will be able to crank it up and down, and swing it side to side with ease.

My rings FWIW. (The top one I made from some available materials as I had transferred this table and it's lifter from a table top DP to a floor stander, and this gave me more movement down, whereas I did not need the movement up...)

Nice work on the resto.......As to the table lift on the other one, outlaw reasoned it out. Someone put that hose clamp around there because the column clamp it butts up underneath is rounded and not flat.

If you take that clamp off and flatten the bottom edge, it should function as intended.

That drill press turned out very nice.
Not to get off topic but..

I have wanted one of these since I used this one while doing some work in this shop. Something about the old iron I like.

I will check that out, thanks Outlaw!

Nice work on the resto.......

Thanks, and thanks for dropping in!

Thanks, and that's not off topic, post any cool drill presses you see! Also, I want to thank you for the pics of the drill box, I can now reconstruct a cover for it!

Funny, I just picked up two quarts and two spray cans of Mid Green Hammertone at a garage sale recently. I am happy with how it came out and the clear should allow easier clean up of those messy fingerprints. The station just kinda came together when I was almost through restoring the press. The file desk came from an auction, it was free with some large metal cabinets that I purchased. I found some wheels from a media cart that also came from auction and put them on the file desk to make it mobile. All but one of my work benches are only 24" deep and the drill press is about 28" deep so I could not put it anywhere except on my main work table or this cart(that was stored under my main table). Turns out the cart is about 29" and the drill box would fit right in so my mind was made up! Thanks for stopping in!

Please tell me a little bit about where you found the light and how you installed it.

Very nice rebuild. I've enjoyed reading this thread.

The light is from a sewing table, I am an upholsterer by trade and had a few old flex lights laying around. You can buy them from any sewing supply like the one linked below. I took it all apart to paint and cut the shaft down to about 1" long(it's designed to go through thick wood) so it would fit in the wire housing better. Then I drilled the appropriate size hole in the top of the metal wire box and after the paint was dry, put it back together and installed it. Since the light has a switch, I wired it constant so I can use the light without the drill running. Thanks for stopping in, here is that link:

PM me an offer, that's how that works:thumbup: I want to keep it but I want to keep everything(I'm borderline hoarder). This bench model is more than I will probably ever need so it would not hurt me to part out the floor model... if the offer is right.:D Thanks for stopping in!

Here is a really cool unidentified box I got from member Lkdelta today in the mail, THANKS Lkdelta!! It fits perfectly behind the drill press and will store all the bits, etc.
pic01255.jpg

It already had dividers and felt, I will redo the felt when I restore the box though.
pic01256.jpg

Like it was made for it!
pic01257.jpg

Here it is freshened up for use.

Fresh coat of camo green with clear coat for protection.

Then I lined the drawers with some 4oz cow hide leather I had laying around.

Also put a patch on the bottom.

Next I will be refurbing the roll stand, stay tuned!
