I think this can be a great thread as I ask myself this question while looking through the Snap On and Matco catalogs. I know that many tools are "rebadged" but I don't know which tools they are.

No other brands are involved in this particular recall, but I'd be very surprised if Ryobi and the brands Monte mentions wouldn't have products in common....

could be since they come from the same factory (Ryobi, AEG,Ridgid,Milwaukee)....much cheaper too - to use identical parts inside and just put a different housing on the outside ...

Monte, is Deutschland good about informing people of the country of origin for tools?

not really. You dont need to put the COO on a product.
In case of hand tools you mostly see a "Germany" when its from germany and from a german company. Importers mostly/always avoid putting a COO on the product.
In most cases power tools have a COO on the tool, except Dewalt, AEG and Milwaukee. Makita + Hitachi put a COO on the tool, except the ones which are from China. Bosch + Metabo put a COO on the tool + the package, most other brands too since they are mostly "made in Germany" anyway so you dont need to hide something...

There are alot of European tool brands I never heard before, but they look nice. How come no Pittsburg or Central Pneumatic?

We have "Pittsburg" here too, ours is called "Einhell". www.einhell.com

But in most cases you will find "Bosch Green"
http://www.bosch-do-it.co.uk/boptocs2-uk/?division=hw
over here along with Skil as low price entry level tools. Noname brands are sold in every big box store too of course but every second power tool sold in europe is from Bosch. But the professional brands which are not sold in big box stores are mostly from german companies along with importers like Dewalt or Makita.

Most of Matco's impacts and it is the same with most of their air tools which are rebadged IRs.Screwdrivers are German made by Witte. It is the same with Cornwell, air tools and their screwdrivers made by Witte.Matco now has a smoke machine made by Redline.

I see that some of the similarities are based on looks. I kinda wonder like the craftsman/knipex if pittsburgh made a knock off product that looked the same with just the name, I'm just saying its easy to knock off a product these days.

There are similar companies like "Wurth" + "Technolit" who rebrand power tools like "Berner" for example. www.Berner.de

some "Berner" rebranded tools from Dewalt, Bosch + Fein:

Bosch = china, snap-on = USA though. But who knows....website is wrong...?. or Bosch supplies parts ...and snap-on is rather "assembled in USA" than "made" .... ?

So are you saying that you can tell us what all the makes that are made by the different companies?

I seriously doubt it. Sure we all know that companies have been doing this throughout the years. But I still think it is a good idea to post this information for everyone that isn't quite as informed as you.

Steve

No I dont know all of the specific info. I am simply saying that for Milwaukee there are two completely different lines. The professional line brings a premium, while the homeowner line brings a slightly lower price. The quality difference is fairly easy to tell if you have a bit of common sense. Trying to compare the tools shown with the professional line though is rather absurd. Yes, the cheap line is still expensive, but it is not the same. They do not even share similar parts. Professional grade Milwaukee is Milwaukee. The stuff shown here is China, just as many other brands do.

OK Monte, where do you get all this information? You are a walking tool encyclopedia.

Well, do you know who produces this one? Because I am sure Hazet doesn't.

That Hazet impact looks exactly like a Taiwan made one I bought new at the flea market for eight bucks, and sold at work for $25. It was pretty nice looking and seemed well made, but certainly was not Hazet quality at all.

I would be interested in seeing whether the identical tools are of similar quality in terms of the quality of the components used. You'd think so, but would love to find out either way...

Great thread.

As was discussed in another thread, the Menards MasterForce levels are german-made Stabila's.

MasterForce 12v products are apparently Craftsman clones, however I have a feeling that on most of the mid-level 12v products, Bosch is the OEM.

There is a specialty hardwood and plywood store that i go to that sells FESTOOL, i have never used any of it, it looks like nice stuff but is on the pricey side $$$$. it all comes in neat stacking containers to keep them safe and in good working condition. I will stick with my bosch and porter cable woodworking tools as they have never let me down. Thanks for the info Monte.
