Curtis compressors have been around longer. I believe since 1907. I love my 7 1/2 hp 29cfm at 175psi compressor. It will keep up with just about anything i throw at it.
I been told SB's castings are made in Toledo, possibly at the same
foundry as Curtis.

guys - i guess christmas day (and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate) is the right day to tell the guy that sold me this with a broken crank, it is just wrong to have told me that it was in perfect working order but just stored and not with power available, that is is just wrong - and i know he knew because it looks like it was jb welded together - don't know if the pics show, but there are a couple of gobs that look like dried plastic weld - so to you, seller, i say that i hope santa leaves you a lump of coal in your stocking because you were definitely not a good boy!

I'll be checking with my friend in a few days. You're gonna get that compressor running, even if it takes 1000 posts on this thread!

wow I would of never of thought a crank that heavy would break like that, I hope you do get lucky and find a good donor crank. Let us know if you find one.

I went on a crankshaft hunt yesterday. My friend has a pump that is the old style, however, it is the pump he currently has mounted for his day to day use. He said he was willing to part with one of his newer style pumps, but the connecting rods and crankshaft are not the same. We need to do some research. I'm thinking it may be possible to to use the connecting rods and crankshaft in the old style pump. If the actual shaft is the same diameter I think we're in luck. Let me know what you think.

Kams1973 - much appreciated - so the defining point is the price for a new crank, which is $257 through the good graces of JCQuick a GJ member and contributor to this thread

so whatever else we do, if the $, hours, brain damage, or messing up the rest of the pump factor start to push that $257 number, I think we go new - if your solution is plug and play and less $, i say we go that way - what do you and the others think? - djd99 you have been pretty outgoing on this thread and have rebuilt this pump...your thoughts?

thanks to all

Without shipping, I can get the connecting rods(w/ new inserts), crankshaft, & pistons for $75. That don't include shipping. I will actually send this stuff to you, and if it doesn't work or you decide to go another route just send it back to me. If you decide you want it and it works, you can send the money later. I'm just trying to help out another GJ member.

930D - thanks for this - had not seen this site before - seems like the HFT of the compressor world

i can say that the style pump they show in the blown out diagram is a newer version than mine - it has a different crank and rods, and most importantly a different centrifagul uploader - but i will check to see if they sell the older style - thanks again

OK - time for an update and some thank u's

Kams1973: we worked hard to make a complete bottom end that Kam found work out - but my crankcase would not accomodate it - either way a BIG, BIG thank u to Kam for working hard to try to get me a fix - much appreciated

JC Quick: not finding anything in the used arena, went back to JC to get a new crank - we threw in an overhaul kit and he worked it out with SB that the gasket kit i bought from him could be deleted out of the kit and price credited - THANK YOU JC

so, when the parts come in i'll circle back up to get some help rebuilding this thing

oh...and to the guy that sold this unit to me (who i can't imagine is a GJ'er) i hope that the lump of coal in your stocking turned out to be a lump of dog cr*p...you earned it

SB has a lot of the OEM stickers and whatnot And I think paint, if you want to go that route and cherry it up when you're finished. I'm working on mine on-and-off this week.

Did you buy a new crank or find a used one? These are excellent pumps that will last for many years to come well worth the investment. Id rather put $600 in these over buying a new unit from depot.

DJD - ended up buying new $257 - with some discounting help from JC Quick - many thanks again JC!!

Kam and i worked hard to make a bottom end he found work - $75 for the entire bottom end - awesome offer from kam and thanks for that!! - but the newer cranks mate up to a different centrifigal diffuser (new ones are cone shaped - my vintage is round shaped) - so that didn't work out

so bought the crank new and bought a rebuild kit

They are the Snap-On of air compressors. The only problem is China is starting to move in to the product (mag starter, pipe fittings, drain, belts, motor pulley, unloader valve? and psi gage.

Lots of parts online for the faux 705 pumps. I presume they actually fit the real 705 for replacement parts. As far as China parts, maybe for knockoff replacement parts but not on Saylor Beall from the factory.
