Gotta admit, this little guy does a pretty good job.

I may still have to go to a small 2-post eventually, but I really think that's gonna limit my workable space. Sitting under this on a mechanic's seat for oil changes is no big deal, and it makes brake and chassis work a sinch.

Anybody else work with these, and if so, any suggestions for additional safety? I'd really like to find some tripod stands to put under it, but most "under hoist tripods" are way too tall for this little guy. It's max lift is 54".

Ah, but see, that's still a bit short. I mean they'll work, but I'd have to either use blocks of wood on top, or let the car sit 6" or so lower when I work on it. Not the end of the world but I'd love to be able to support it at max height.

Used one of these for about 10 years. never felt the need for stands. It was always stable.

Maybe, if you removed the engine and trans out of a rear weighted car like a porsche you might have too much weight at one end but normal use it was real stable.

Brake work and oil changes were great.

Cheers!

You may have to cut down some full height stands. I waited for a sale at Princess Auto which is like the Canadian equivalent of Harbor Freight.

Those lifts are usually rated for 6,000 pounds. I don't think that's enough for your pickup. Look into parallelogram lifts, they have lower lift heights but some are rated to 10,000 pounds.

I’ve got two scissor lifts and have had them for close to twenty years. I’ve never had an issue with stability. I’ve even pulled transmissions and done clutch work.

I am looking for one that will lift a pickup about 7000 lbs. And one you can move if needed.

I’ve had my superduty extended cab on mine a couple of times. It goes up and gets stands put under immediately. I don’t suggest this for anyone to do.

Thanks for the responses, and yeah, 6000 lbs is the max, so I think even a modern 1/2 ton truck might be borderline. I hope it lifts my '72 Monte Carlo! With a smallblock I think that's still well under 4000 lbs though.

And good point Garett, maybe I could cut down some taller ones.

I have the Snap On 6500 pound unit and lift near full height my 2008 GMC 2500HD Crew cab diesel
I love the lift, it's very convenient for 80% of the work I do

That’s what mine are and they’ll lift the SD but don’t sound happy to do it.

I put money on the Monte being lighter than you think. My guess would be 3500 lbs MAX. My 02 Camaro weighed in at 3600 lbs. My 79 Camaro came in stock around 3400 lbs or so. Its interesting that the newer vehicle weighs more than the older one. The older vehicles may have been made with heavy steel and were large, but they were fairly 'hollow' in comparison to the newer cars that are packed with safety and electronics.

I have had mine for a few years now, i dont feel the need for extra stands, once the wheels come off floor, i just do the “push test” i just give it a hard push, or shake, then up she goes.

Also, with a 2 post, stands are for stopping it doing a front or back “endo”
With a scissor lift you still have a sizable platform underneath, if say a arm fails.
Glad you are enjoying the lift.

I have debated about buying a scissors lift, so I haven't done it, but I just may decide to do it in the not too distant future. If I decide to get one, what brand would you guys recommend and where should I be buying it from?

I lifted my 2012 Tahoe and the current 2014 Silverado Double Cab. From runs to the transfer station, I know it weighs 5600 lbs. I did the same with the Tahoe but I cannot remember the weight now.

The 6000 lbs lift sounded like the pump was working a little harder but it did not have a problem getting the truck in the air and staying stable.

I have never seen one of these in any capacity except 6000 lb.

There are other styles of lifts like the full rise flush mount that has greater capacity.

Cheers!

I will have to check them out. I would like something I could use in the garage and also take it outside if necessary and use it on my driveway. I want something that is very stable.

Yes mine is very stable, i recessed it, but was mobile on a flat surface before my pit, but its gotta be flat and smooth

My Dannmar also is AWESOME, its identical to the Benpak model. These two where the only ones i was considering since the have the auto lock and auto release function, not that rinky dinky bike cable handle release. The lift is super heavy duty and the center locking bar is BUILT heavy duty in mind
again also very happy

Now THAT is a great idea. My S10 is so narrow that unless you get it 100000% perfectly centered, the tires drag driving over it. :bounce:

Mine's a Rotary. I bought it off a customer of mine, so I have the added bonus of selling my own parts for it, and knowing the Rotary rep if I need tech support. To be honest though, looking at various other brands online, they all look VERY similar, even the Harbour Freight (?) one. Who knows, they might all come from the same factory.

Same factory? Probably

I bought mine through Princess Auto for the customer service.
I had a issues with pump(about 6 months in), PA gave one of their off the self units (same specs) no questions asked, plus another year of warranty.
Love that place!

cheapest I could get the harbor freight unit was $1400 granted that was with a 20% off coupon. The bendpak is $2065. I am on the fence but the harbor freight unit scares me and service and parts availability is something that might suffer.

The Rotary one, sold over the counter at my store, is nearly $3000 CDN. But that's with a Rotary badge on it, which probably accounts for the extra cost.

That's the way I feel too......
I have a midrise BendPak and it's really all I can use in the garage due to height.

I've got a similar lift and these are the stands I use. I bought a pair and they've been great.

I work in a garage with an 8' ceiling and found sometimes the roller seat was too tall to work underneath stuff, but the first lock had me reaching if I was on the creeper. The solution to that issue was a nice adjustable creeper.

I personally like the cable release over the automatic

any reason you prefer the auto?

I’ve owned both the Rotary RMR6 and also the Direct Lift 6MR. They are the same unit and both ship with the same Rotary branded instructions and warranty info. The Direct Lift version was $500 cheaper!

I dont think the Auto was a deal breaker as the build quality of the locking mechanism.
I did lots of contemplating of which one to get, the HF style that seems to be the most common one and cheaper by at least $500 on line by most vendors. After watching id say all the scissor lifts on youtube (SX-6/MD-6XP) then the cheaper ones i call them the clones i couldn't get over the locking device of the cheaper ones, that little locking arm made me cringe. I also read about modding the locking tab to keep it down seen some vids on line. After looking at the BP and Dannmar ones is a different design totally on the locking arm as the weight of the vehicle locks the arm in and will never release unless you lift up the lift to engage the release. Also the middle locking arm is real real beefy on the BP/Dmr.
I will admit i only have three positions on my lift compared the the HF that has more not sure how many but more then three.
Mine seem to be in the perfect spot BUT i would have liked to have a lock just off the floor but oh well.
Hope this helps others with this info to make their choice :)
Im a tech for over 20yrs so i seen my share of lifts and need to feel confident when im underneath !!!
