Went to Sears today and found some USA made Irwin Vise Grips. They matched the online $24.99 price. Found them behind 4-5 sets of the newer Chinese made tools, noticed the packaging was slightly different and the plastic had a yellow tinge to it. I imagine they have been there for a while, they actually have a few spots of rust on the side that was against the cardboard.

Hmm. Wouldn't that be something like 20 years old? lol
I thought Irwin went to China in the 80's or 90's

I think that is more for pipes than nuts/bolts (despite what the pictures show). There was a thread on here about it a while ago, and it's a knock off a reputable brand (can't remember which one).

Twice the price, four times the wrench: (Bahco BAH9072P)

Ridgid and Reed both have pipe wrenches similar to it, the former calls it the RapidGrip. Neither offer a model with an adjustable upper jaw though.

Just wasted points on this dumb thing. Says 10.00 off
Never seen this one either.

http://m.sears.com/18oz-flex-claw-hammer/p-00950845000P

The jaws on the break wrench look like they have pretty sharp teeth in the photo, but at the store the teeth looked more rounded. The packaging prevented me from trying the locking slip-joint feature.

The flex hammers looked a bit sloppily made, but the concept is intriguing. I tested the motion on three of them, and the button on one of them wouldn't budge.

Both made in China. Possibly the first Craftsman-branded hammer made overseas in the tool department. (not counting the sledges in lawn & garden)

Dear god. Craftsman is putting out more gimmicks than Kobalt lately

Or at least every time Father's Day draws near.

Well their tools may be lower than whale excrement now but I did take advantage of their prices on some Knipex stuff. Not them $600 wire strippers though. Just a few odds and ends, those mini bolt cutters, end nippers, and a small cable cutter. Nothing exotic but I figure I might save my old lineman's pliers from the cutting abuse I sometimes put them through.

If someone had a half a clue their they might and I mean might help bring back some customer loyalty if they start making their tools in the USA again. Hell I'd settle for higher quality Taiwan versus the Chinese cheapies. Not much of an increase in profit when you increase your profit margin by going to cheap **** offshore but you sell one tenth as much.

Frankly I might go to sears but once a year now. Sometimes not even that.

But, But its FATHERS day. We need to rush and get dad another tie and flex-waffle-angle-china-gimmick hammer.

Sears is grasping at straws, for me at least, haven't stepped in a store or gone to their site intending to buy, in months.

The gimmick tools are really starting to get old, but haven't they always had that sort of idea from the 1990's and up?

Those are chinese

Chinese or USA, I used to different extractors form this set and they both easily broke just leaving the bolt and now a piece of the extractor. I haven't tried any better brands of these, so can't compare but didn't provide me any value :/. Many of the review are similar on Sears.com - they are worth the price you pay, so consider that when purchasing.

Good price regardless, if they are right for you.

I had a set of these I thought I got from Sears about 5 or 6 years ago, but they don't say Craftsman on them (although they look identical other than the case being black) so maybe I got them somewhere else. Well, I rarely use them, but tried to the other week and it snapped off. Anyone know where I can get a quality set of these? I'm tempted to buy this set, but it sounds like they will be about like what I had.

I had a screw that was stripped bad and held in with loctite that I couldn't get out. I went to HD and got the Ryobi and Speed Out sets. The Ryobi didn't work but the Speed Out grabbed it and took it out. I was pretty impressed, but that is my only experience with them.

$15 at HD: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ontel-Speed-Out-Speed-Out-Screw-Extractor-4-Piece-1000264/205110987

Does the Craftsman 24" gooseneck bar or soft face hammer ever go on sale at Sears? Sometimes I find Craftsman hammers with red tags in store but I don't see them on sale online.

Irwin Hanson. They make a lot of Extractors! Here are three different sets/styles (They also have some smaller sets too)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SRG66/?tag=atomicindus08-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NF5H4/?tag=atomicindus08-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MXRPXY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

These Rennsteigs are also really nice
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009SM2DTW/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Great Proto Set
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001VY0DUQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

And a Ridgid Kit
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WQYJIG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Now which one do you need? All of them. Depends on the situations. I own all the kits linked to above except for the ridgid kit, and they all have their use. These are probably the best extractors out there (besides the welder, nothing beats that).

I also have some turbo sockets, and those work well too. Those are more rounded nut/bolts case, not extracting a snapped fastener though.

Also a good set of left hand drill bits do wonders too, especially if you snapped the head off the bolt when tightening it down (which usually means the fastener will move easily, and then a left hand drill bit will usually just take it out).

Even with good tools, however, extracting is 90% patience, drilling straight, and going slowly. The remaining 10% is luck. Even the best extractors break, and that only puts you in a worse spot.

I've seen these posted for $25 before, but now it's an even better time to buy if you held out:

Craftsman Professional 4-ton Jack Stands $22.99

They got 20% and 10% points back promos going on, so you should be able to score over $6 in points when paying out of pocket.

UPDATE: Sears 10% bonus has expired, but the 20% is still going:
"Members get 20% back in points (up to $25 in points) when you purchase qualifying items at Sears, between 6/12/16 - 6/19/16. Points redeemable 6/20/16 - 6/25/16."

USA-made tools and customer loyalty didn't help Sears from being bought out by a bankrupt Kmart back in 2004.

On the other hand, selling cheap imports helped Harbor Freight stores expand across America. Even here on GJ, their foreign-made hand tools and boxes are promoted by many.

Finally, I think it was around 2010 I started seeing Craftsman sockets and ratchets start to move overseas. By this point, it was clear that most Americans say they want Made in USA, but their wallets say something completely different. Even you just admitted:
"Hell I'd settle for higher quality Taiwan..."

I agree with above but I think he meant if he had no choice he would take Taiwan over China

I have one of the gooseneck bars I found at a local Sears for something like $6-$8 last year. It was when I was able to search the stores actual inventory/prices, which I no longer know how to do.

A word of warning. Mine came with the nail puller notch cut horribly off center so grabbing a nail head was near impossible. I just used an angle grinder to fix it.

Edit: The gooseneck bar has the painted label "Made in USA"

Keep in mind that the points for both promotions are time sensitive and their redemption periods do not overlap. The points for the 10% promo are only redeemable 6/14 - 6/19 while the points for the 20% promo are for 6/20 - 6/25.

Vaughan possibly manufacturers the long flat-beam pry bars and certain nail pullers for Craftsman but I think Dasco Pro supplies most of their larger pry bars, wrecking bars and nail sets. The quality just isn't there. I have a pair of 30-year old Craftsman 24" goosenecks stamped AP-6597 that have held a better edge than what the ones on the rack are coming from their factory with.

I would buy more tools from craftsman if they were still made here.

If I'm going to buy foreign made tools I might as well buy them cheaper from HF or HD.

Craftsman use to be the middle grade tools between the cheap foreign tools and the high quality truck tools. They targeted us guys who want a good quality American made tool but didn't have the money or contact for the truck tools. If someone buys craftsman from Sears/K-mart I hope they bring it back to that target user.

I do not understand the animosity towards Sears, personally.

The sheer volume of tools they move grants them some influence but Apex's (Danaher/Cooper) decision to move so much production overseas was inevitable given the economy and consumer trends. Considering how rough it's been for department stores in the last 15-20 years and the advent of both hypermarkets and home centers, it's surprising that Sears has held in there this long.
