I recently used the Craftsman (Knipex) Cobras to re-install drum brake hold down retainers. The specialty tool essentially has you working blind, the Cobras gripped the retainer great and allowed me to see what I was doing lining up the keyhole w the retainer pin.

That said, just about any pair of pliers would probably do the same.

I don't think anyone here has used one. Personally, I think it looks like a pretty useful tool, although I'd be more inclined to buy the Stanley or Crescent version first. They have flat jaws like a traditional adjustable wrench, which would be more appropriate for my applications -- brass pipe fittings, etc.

I just got back from my local Sears. They still have the sale prices on stuff till the 7th, numerous things are cheaper than online. So check your store before purchasing online to compare.

Anyhow, they had a display with that adjustable wrench. It's kind of like combining an adjustable wrench with some vice grips. The level part works totally independent of the adjustment, so you can adjust it like normal without having to open the lever part first. The lever action closes down on the jaws *ever so slightly*, so if you have adjusted them tight initially then when it clamps down it grabs is pretty good. If you adjusted loosely then when you close the level it would still be loose (which happened to me at first when fiddling with it).

If you don't have any adjustable wrenches, then you could buy these and they serve dual purpose. Otherwise if you buy these they will probably just sit and collect dust as a tool you only use once in a blue moon, and will probably end up using vice-grips instead without thinking if you ever needed to grab something anyhow.

There is also a two-piece set for a little more, it looks like all of them have 50% back in points right now.

Well, Sears is starting to roll out the "Pro" line of everything as their "Made in USA" products once again... *rolleyes*... Whether it's too little too late we will have to wait and see...

Do you have a source? Been looking to add the 10" pro prybar to my collection for a while now.

This version has some grooves or serrations in the jaws. I think of it as a handheld mini-vise. I can see this being phenomenal for holding a piece against a grinding wheel, for instance.

(Disclosure: I also haven't used any of these hybrid locking plier / adjustable wrench tools. Based on reviews, it does sound to me like the principle is sound.)

Edit: I just ordered THREE of the Crescent version from a 3rd-party vendor on Amazon, for $24 shipped. I hadn't planned to buy one so soon, but it seemed like a great deal. They'll take a week or so to get here.
wow, that's a good price,

wow, that's a good price,

This is the item page - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CDJBSI8/?tag=atomicindus08-20

The deal is dead though, there was just one in stock, saying "Used - Like New."

This retailer is no longer listed as having this item for sale, used or otherwise. It was All Device Source, Inc. Looks like they have an 84% positive review rate. We'll see how it goes :)

I hear you man. Good on you then. I meant no offense.

None taken. I was in a hurry earlier today when I wrote that and should have been a little more careful with how I worded it. Others opinions/experience with any tool is beneficial IMO. I've thankfully been talked out of a lot of impulsive buys just by reading others comments. LOL.

I just don't have any personal experience with this tool so I was deferring to anyone who had. I agree that it's gimmicky and it would quickly find it's way to a bottom drawer. But, as others have mentioned, some may find it useful. Reading the reviews, a lot of people seem to really like them.

You can't really go wrong with that clamping adjustable wrench, assuming you need another wrench. It functions just as a regular one if you ignore the extra handle, and I can see the *occasional* time the clamping feature would be a little helpful to hold onto that nut/bolt.

I'm not big on using an adjustable wrench in the first place, I always go for the correct size wrench or socket so you don't round anything off.

If someone gave me one as a gift I would keep it, but I wouldn't buy one for myself.

I think when I go back to my local sears I'm going to grab that 20pc GearWrench Ratcheting Wrench set. They have it for $44.99 vs $49.99 online, and with my surprise points + regular points I can buy it for about $10. :) I know I would use ratcheting wrenches a LOT more than a clamping adjustable wrench.

Forgot to ask, is there any way to search for items that have bonus point points? Or is it just browsing around and you happen to notice?

Most of these prices are now gone or higher. I was kinda eyeing the Nupla hammer but it's back up to $43.99.

The 36" pry bars with strike cap are up to $24.99.

Did you just find these by diligently searching the website and using filters? Or is there a new crop of sale prices listed in something like a sale flyer?

See my explanation below:

From the home page, type a brand name in the search bar. On the results page, change to Sears only. On the left bar, find X% off under Discount. I usually go with 30% off, but you could go with more or less.

If you do this with Craftsman, you will get a screen with suggested categories. Below the individual items listed, there will be a gray bar with "discover more in this category". Clicking this will get you all Craftsman results in tools, lawn & garden, or whatever category you're interested in. You can then change to Sears only and filter by % off. I also usually organize the results by price, low to high.

This won't find points back offers. I have yet to find a good way to come across those.

Thanks, I honestly never noticed the % off on the side, lol. I usually just browse certain sections and choose my local store (so I can pick up). Then I just click a bunch of them to see if they have any bonus point things.

I also like to leave an item I'm thinking of buying in my cart. Sometimes when you do that the system will send you an email giving you a little extra discount or points if you purchase it within so many days. :)

I have the specialty tool and usually use Vise-grips.

I see that Stanley locking adjustable wrench on Walmart's website. It claims to have one in stock local to me. I'll stop by and see if it's there. Shipping would be a deal killer.

They were on shelf at Walmart for $11.88.

I wouldn't give you $5 for one of their current model bench grinders... I got an 8" NIB from a person on CL... Stones were horrible out-of-round (egg shaped) and took a lot of shimming to reduce side-to-side wobble. Just light grinding you could stop the motor...

The only nice features were the oversized tool rests were semi-decent and had thumb-wheels so you could adjust angles easy. Likewise you could take off the side covers with a thumbwheel and twist. The current model 8" still has those, but the 6" doesn't.

Thanks for posting the info. I have no experience with them (I have a couple old blocks), but the reviews looked good so I thought maybe it was a decent deal.

^^^ It's probably not a 2007 vintage, they probably do a run each year (or at least new case?)... I saw those a while back they had them cheaper but I figured I would never use them so it's kind of pointless (to me)...

Anyhow, today they have the 4lb Craftsman Hand Sledge Hammer for only $9.99 (Reg $19.99).

Oh, and since it's in Lawn & Garden, if you happen to have the $10 surprise points (no minimum purchase) you could get this for free!

Just about any brand 4lb hand sledge will be at least $20...

I did all my sweeps this morning (on PC & mobile)... Didn't win a single penny... :(

It's all random, but I think on Wednesdays you have a slightly better chance, or the day when they do the doorbuster tag...

I don't know why, but the two nearest Sears stopped stocking that 4 lb sledge hammer about a year ago. Though, I keep seeing that $9.99 daily deal.

There is a thread in the General Tool section for discussion of Stanley buying Craftsman. Please post your comments there and leave this to deals as it was intended.

For reference.

Sorry. I thought that list of closing stores I posted yesterday would help the shoppers here who are wondering why their store no longer appears as a pickup option on the website.
