Probably looked like a dirtbag, but I purchased every 4-piece set available in my three nearby stores along with five 3-piece sets. I also bought (6" and 8") long nose, bent nose and duck bill pliers in doubles; none of the nearby stores carry the long reach pliers in open stock. I already own 3-4 full sets of slip joint pliers and do not care for Western Forge's diagonal cutters. I have heard mixed opinions on the linesman pliers but still picked up an 8" pair because you can never have too many small hammers. I spent just shy of $260 after points and earned another $90 back.

Had wanted the 16 and 13 for a while but couldn't justify it as I had the channellock versions already, but it seems like it was a now or never so I bit the bullet with all clearance prices.

The arc joint pliers were never priced competitive; the Craftsman 16" arc joint pliers are $23.88 on clearance which is still more expensive than what the Channellock 460 goes for. Still, I own sets of both.

The wife keeps complaining about all the packages that keep coming in from Sears. But some of the deals are just stupid low, no wonder they are going out of business.

I have a lot more stuff out in my shop area that is already opened. This stuff is just from the last few weeks and not opened yet.

8" drill presses were 30 each. Craftsman circular saw was 12 I think. Wen barstool was 19 shipped. Got 2 6" vises for 15 each.

Seems like the last few weeks Kmart has had better deals though

All online. Just ordered several more items from Kmart that came to 106 after a 10 in surprise points. All items had 50% back in points. I check the site daily though. Some items if you don't catch them as soon as they go on sale they will be out of stock.

Behind all the stuff against the wall is a 2.5 gallon, 8 gallon and a 10 gallon wet/dry vacs. They all were discounted some from the regular price and then had 50% back in points too.

Never saw that Drill Press deal, I would have liked to have picked one of those up for sure for small stuff.

I just looked at my order for the drill presses. I made two different orders to get them.

Was on sale for 59.00 with 17.98 back in points and then got another 3.00 for using my Sears card. So net 38. 2nd order I made was less because I added a filler item to get it over the needed amount to use a coupon. After points and Sears bonus it was less than 30.00

I feel like they are marketing to a certain crowd ... like friends shopping for inlaws or newleyweds who are buying things quickly and on spec and are maybe never going to be repeat customers...:dunno:

Like, if it looks like a tool and says CMAN it passes some kind of social utility test as a gift widget ....:lol::lol: but other than that nobody actualy gives a sh!t about whether or not it works more than in a demo capacity when its being unboxxed.

(don;t get me started with the reviews of tools that have 5 stars just after getting it out of the package and never once using it in the field).

more like newly weds where the husband has no idea how to do nothing and the wife just shouts and yells and demands he spend money right now.

I think there is pretty widespread misunderstanding of just how much of a discount "points back" is.

It is simply incorrect to say that a $59 item with about $21 in points back means that you paid $38 for that item.

Think of it this way: if a wrench is $10 with 50% ($5) in points back, you actually paid $10 for that wrench. If you purchased the same wrench again and used your $5 in points, then you would pay $5 out of pocket for that second wrench. In other words, you would pay $10 + $5 = $15 for two wrenches, or $7.50 for each wrench. In short, 50% points back equates to a 25% discount.

You can calculate the % off for points back on any item by figuring out the % points back (i.e., $21 off $59 is about 36%) and dividing it in half (so 18%).

In other words, the drill you purchased actually cost you about $48 - not $38.

Points back offers can make for some great deals, but I think many people count the full amount of the points back as the discount (which is what Sears wants you to think), and overestimate how good of a deal they are getting.

Not to mention when you are paying full price you also end up paying tax.

But when you use points / coupons that discounts the price before tax, so there is a little extra savings.

I'm done playing the games with Sears and the surprise points shenanigans. Until I see something that I need, or it's basically free after points, then I'll pass...

^ ^ ^ Think you meant to say . . . . I'm DONE . . . playing the Sears pts game.

I'm almost to that point, but had to use up SYW pts I had built up. Skipped on buying the DieHard battery as found even better deal at Advance Auto Parts with $50 off.

I look at things a little different then.

Suppose there is something that I want that I am going to buy regardless. For example the Wen oscillating belt and spindle sander. I have been watching this item on eBay, Sears and Amazon. Amazon has it at 161, eBay at 191 and Sears at 159 wafted a 20'off 150 coupon.

I am going to spend the 159 regardless but Sears has a 2.5 gallon wall mountable wet vac for 29 and a circular saw for 39. Both items are something I am eventually going to buy anyways but go ahead and buy them since they have points offerings. Total comes to 76.28 shipped after taxes but I get 52.11 back in points that I will apply towards my sander that I am going to buy regardless in the next few days. So 159- the 52 in points = 107 for the sander so far but I have a circular saw and a wet vac for 24 shipped after taxes that i want but don't need at the moment so let's just say I don't need them and sell em on CL for 40 which is very doable. I'm not at 107-40= 67 out of pocket for the sander I was going to pay at least 159 for anyways. Suppose I do he same buy and get the same points I could very easily be zero out of pocket for something I was going to pay 159 for anyways.

I am still stocking my shop of tools so I opt to keep the items rather than sell them since they are cheap.

I do the same thing for every large item that I am going to purchase anyways.

EDIT: And I got beat to it by Catadj78.

It entirely depends on how you spend those points back. If he bought the drill press and received $21 BIP, then used that $21 to pay for something he was otherwise going to pay cash for, he either saved $21 on the DP or on the second item depending on how you want to look at it. If he instead used the points to buy something he would never have paid cash for, it's a bit of a different scenario.

I think a lot of people see the points as a discount the first time, and then use the points to get a second item they wouldn't otherwise buy (because it's "free") essentially applying the points twice in their mind and not really saving any $.

As for me, I own basically every item from Sears that I have any intention of ever needing. Points back are no longer of any value to me unless I resell the item I use them on (<-- this is actually a great way to turn points into cash, and I've even turned them into more cash than their points value with an ~hour of work selling the item).

All true, catadj78 and supersport. My main point is simply that people regularly oversimplify the savings by just deducting the points back from the item cost and conclude that it is a great deal. As you both pointed out, it is actually much more complicated than that. Whenever I get mired into trying to get a Sears deal, I try to focus on what the actual price paid for each item is.

As much as I hate to see Sears die a slow death, it is hard to sympathize when they offshore formerly good products and shift their business model to gimmicky points deals rather than focusing on the basics of running a tight ship. And when I see some people falling for those gimmicks, it kind of irks me (e.g., when they "apply the points twice" as super sport explained).

Looks like everyone did likewise. The Sears website show just about out of everything. My local store (Northern Virginia) was picked clean and pretty much nothing available for a 50 mile radius.

I ended up buying the 3pc electricians set off the website at full price since all the 4pc sets evaporated. (rolls eyes)

I'm curious if they will run sales like this on other manufacturer's items?

see, this is what makes me mad, I'm supposed to have $10.00 surprise points on $30.00.
Spend all this time looking for channel loc in stock, and the Crescent double joint set, and at what stores, finding $1.75 filler items, and Now not seeing them.
Is the Crescent double set a hot buy or something, and cant apply. What a bunch of B/S!

It's likely that clearance items are excluded.

When I want to know if surprise points or a coupon will work on an item, I put multiples of that item in my cart and see if it works. Then I go find fillers and confirm that it still works with those.

OK, Thanks, yeah, l read the exclusions, that's what it said.
So the Crescent double joint set is clearance, l take it?
I didn't see the original thread.
16.88 is still a good price for them though, right?
They are pretty well made and all?

Above the price on the website you'll see a little yellow "Clearance" box. Also, $X.88 and $X.97 prices almost always signify clearance at Sears.

The Crescent pliers are decent quality, and have come in handy for me in tight spaces. I wouldn't say they're top quality, but it's a useful design and the price can't be beat. I think in the past they would drop to ~$20.

It's a solid price. I use them to get my keys when I drop them between the seats in my car. Don't laugh. They are very good at this task!

I can confirm. Merchandise with a price ending in .88 is limited stock on final markdown, basically closeouts, and merchandise with a price ending in .97 is clearance that can be scheduled for further discount by a store.

$29.40 at Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9ULHO6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

They get a 4.6 out of 5 stars.

They are made in China now and here's some additional details from the first review at Amazon:

I was a little surprised when these Crescent PSX203C pliers arrived. Was expecting the 13" length, but are heftier than I had expected. Most of my needle-nose pliers are thinner, these are definitely heavy-duty.

Good quality pliers. Smooth moving joints with no slop.

Some approx. dimensions:
Length overall: 13-1/4" (closed)
Length tip-to-handle-grip: 8-1/4" (closed)
(1/2" shorter with tip fully open/spread)
Width & depth at joints: 5/8" & 3/8"
Max tip spread: 1-5/8"

You're going to have a tough time finding a coupon or surprise points that work on the clearance pliers, but enter this game to get $3 in points that you can apply. Winning is not necessary.

Time to Win

As long as the pink "Doorbuster" is showing, you'll get $3 even if you lose.

Got a little bonus that I don't quite understand - my shopyourway page shows 3160 pts (I already had 160 pts), but when I go sears.com, I show 5160 pts. $2 in points just magically showed up, not sure why. And it's not the 1st time that points have just shown up. Wish I could figure out what exactly triggered that.

I'm a sucker for these long pliers.

I saw the one's above and was like, that's a good price!

So I walked out to my Toolbox and already had like 12 pairs of long pliers!

Decided I didn't need any more!

Could you compare the Gearwrench to the Crescent when you get them? I've strongly been considering the Gearwrench double X pliers.

I didn't order the Crescents...

You know why, I already had them! DOH! Came close on that one...

Anyhow, the Crescents and the Gearwrenches are identical, same company made them.

You're going to have a tough time finding a coupon or surprise points that work on the clearance pliers,

Most of the surprise points and coupons I have received DO work on clearance, the "excludes clearance" language is fairly rare. It's on the $5 coupons giving for not meeting the 5 minute guarantee but that is the only place I have seen it.
