Yeah, one time I ordered a pick axe, offered me free shipping so I figured why not, save me a 45min drive each way to the Sears at the mall...

Came in a HUGE box, literally like 5' x 2' x 3'... With the pick poking out of the side... Filled with a ton of foam peanuts! Worked out well for me, I was using that stuff to ship out things for months! I don't remember what the box was originally from, I think it was a delivery of pillows sent to the store or something similar.

I agree though, if Sears is going to have stores ship items out they should supply them with basic supplies and training. Especially if Sears is going to end up as an online presence only in the future...

When I go to my hometown store, I walk around and snap pics of things I want with my phone. That way when I have points I can see what is on sale and buy accordingly and just pick it up there since it's much closer than the mall Sears (which is closing anyhow and no longer shows up).

Part of the problem on stuff shipped by Sears itself is that a lot of the shipments come from individual stores, which don't always have enough quantity or variety of packing supplies on hand. So even people who know they ought to be packing your order better often don't have the means to do so.

I have a quirky thing going on with my surprise points...

You have $20 to use on Sears sporting goods (When you spend $30.00 or more on qualifying items) Items sold by Sears. Excludes all coupons, clearance and other FREECASH in points.

But then I also have this one....

You have $10 to use on Sears sporting goods (When you purchase 1 or more in quantity on qualifying items) Items sold by Sears. Can combine with other surprise points offers.

I honestly can't get either to work (and would be awesome if they could be combined), instead there is some other random like $5 or $8 discount it gives me for any item over $X... :(

I've never seen any recent surprise ones that says you *can* combine them... That threw me for a loop... Though if it doesn't work at all I guess it is moot...

Click over and view the deals on Sears.com. They offer more details. I have a sporting goods one but it is like $10 off a specific Foosball table. Sears.com lists the deal, but Shopyourway.com doesn't tell you the product that you need to buy to get the points.

Conversely, Sears.com doesn't list any of the "Freecash Friday" points offerings.

Yeah I do check them on Sears vs SYW... I have the fooseball table one too...

Like you said, some will show up on one but not the other. It's just like hit or miss you have to add items to your cart to see what will work or not... :(

Offers that say "1 or more in quantity" are only good on specific items. That one is good on a foosball table. I've been posting the details of this new irritating type of offer every time I see a new one, in the Shop Your Way thread.

And I discovered recently that the Sears.com points offer list has some dumb limit on how many offers it will display at once; between tons of these dumb item-specific offers, and a bunch of department-wide offers that started up again a couple days ago, I now have way too many in my account right now for them all to show up there. So the only place to see them all at once is the shopyourway.com list, and then cross-reference to the specifics I've been saving in the SYW thread (glad I started doing that before my sears.com list overflowed). :eyecrazy:

There really isn't all that much to even order anymore.
They are either revamping the entire tool line in January or something much worse. ***** for them cause they need the sales and everything is gone.

Went and checked out the closing store again tonight, only like 3 half full aisles left of tools and it really doesn't look THAT much different from the non closing store! (at least the power tools section).

The tool dept in my store is half empty. Empty pegs everywhere, half of the tool cabinets gone, entire isles reappropriated for other use. I asked the guys at the counter to level with me and tell me if they were closing down the tool dept. They said that they have been waiting for a truck that has been delayed. Hmmm..

On a related topic, I realized the other day that the electronics dept is gone and has been replaced by mattresses. The store has more mattresses on the floor than a mattress store. I asked the sales person and she said that mattresses offer the greatest profit. The first floor of the store is about 1/3 mattresses now.

the electronics got replaced by mattresses here too.

i bet they have so many mattresses because they can still get them on credit.

they also have the benefit of taking up a lot of room, so the store doesnt look so empty . . . .

Yeah, electronics department got gradually scaled down to just a display rack of phone accessories at almost all Sears stores earlier this year, and the floor space taken up by mattresses and appliances.

Now the rumor I heard from the anonymous employee forum a few months ago is that they plan to reduce the tool department floor space in the remaining stores starting in January (consolidating what's left to eliminate empty shelf space), and take up the vacated floor space with, yes, more mattresses. :(

The Sears nearest me (two recently closed in my area) recently re-did the tool department. Reorganized everything. They got rid of all empty pegs, which looked great. However, there is clearly no place left for things that they didn't have on that day. So they had the 6 and 12 inch clamps, but no empty pegs for bigger sizes.

They actually didn't shrink the size of the space, which was surprising. I commented to a worker that the store looked better than any Sears I had been to in years. He told me that the district manager was supposed to come through to have a look last week, but still hadn't been to their store.

The base floor of the store has about 1/2 the square footage just blocked off and empty. But the tool department really did look great.

And a deal for you:

Vim 9 piece metric hex socket set: $23

They've already eliminated at least two or three isles of tools from my store. If they further consolidate and eliminate the empty peg space, they'll be down to four or five. They used to have four or five table saws on display. Now, one. I guess they really want to shift to an online model and convert their stores to mattress stores, they're well on their way.

From the employee forum this morning, sounds like they're calling this the 'gap elimination project'.

"[My district manager] also had 'serious concerns' about the gap elimination project and was wondering when merchandise was coming in, as he had finally realized it makes certain departments too lean. I thought he was finally seeing the light. Guess not."

Gap elimination? More like product elimination. Pretty soon the tool dept will be the size of a Fotomat.

Shows wrong sizes on SAE, i.e. 1/8 5/16, etc

Yes, the description has been like that forever, it's a mistake. If you can get them at all, you will receive the jumbo sizes. I don't know if they're actually back in stock anyway, since the SPD site has been letting people place orders regardless of actual in-stock quantity all along (someone tested adding a quantity of 99 to their cart and it didn't stop them), and victor252 just said this morning that his order got cancelled because they're "no longer available".

Yeah. A few bits I know:

At least Vaughan, the primary Craftsman hammer manufacturer, seems to still be sticking with it... I've been gradually collecting those this year, and got worried when the last one in stock at my store of a model I didn't have yet (which had been lonely on its peg for months) sold out in late November, but then they got a fresh box of 4 of those back in stock just a week or so later. I've also seen the Nupla-made Craftsman deadblow hammers restocked in the last month or two.

I know Western Forge had a big break-up with Sears earlier this year, resulting in screwdriver shortages for months. They seem to have improved stock on those lately, but they're all made in China now.

I'm not sure who makes/made the Craftsman studfinders, but I got a sweet deal on one about 3 months ago that was the last one of its model on the pegs at my store, and I don't think they've restocked any of the models since then - didn't see a single one at my store last week.

Gladiator garage organization products is owned by Whirlpool, and Sears broke up with them a month or two ago as part of their disagreement with Whirlpool over payment issues, so those will be disappearing from any store where they haven't already. (Whirlpool is still manufacturing for Kenmore, for now, since they apparently get paid on more favorable terms for those, but stopped providing any other Whirlpool-owned brands of large appliances to Sears.)

Empire(Johnson)-made Craftsman squares and levels are all out of stock at my store and unavailable online. The one square I've had my eye on, that had been claiming it could still ship but not until March 2018, improved a couple weeks ago to now claiming it can ship by the end of December 2017. But it's not looking good for the rest of those products.

Wow. Horrible. I thought I could always depend on the screwdrivers to be made here. Sad. Interesting about gladiator. We were going to put some of that up and went to the store to get the tracks and there were none. Now I know why.

I ordered the ten piece Jumbo wrench set this morning. The PARTS17 coupon worked; so My cost was $76.08 including MN sales tax and $9.99 shipping charges. They are on a "Order Placed" status; and mentioned to check back in 48 hours.

Oh, and another thing I noticed completely missing at my store lately: Craftsman wood handsaws! You know, like this:
spin_prod_213685701

The only non-power saws in my store now are a couple of hacksaws and the multi-blade saws (which are made in China but look pretty useful, picked one up last week).

Some of the saws are still available online, but for shipping to home only, which I've come to believe means they're being shipped by other stores that haven't run out yet. If my understanding is accurate, a Sears distribution center has to have them in stock to allow ship-to-store for something that wasn't already in that particular store; one store won't ship to another store (which is silly/dumb, since it doesn't cost them any more, and would actually cost them less since UPS has an upcharge for delivery to a residential address instead of a business).

So, since the distribution centers don't have any and don't expect to be getting any in the foreseeable future, I suspect whoever the Craftsman handsaw manufacturer was has bailed too. :(

I can't find the Nupla 3lb deadblow hammer anymore. I bought one and want a spare. I'll have to check my local Sears even though it looks like it is closing.

If they do, it'll likely be as a franchised Hometown store and not corporate owned. A nearby mall had the same thing happen.

A Sears employee of a closing store told me that was going to happen near me with a different location that was closing, but I have yet to see that.

@Hexen- I doubt if Sears hasn't received the Empire squares yet, that they will get them. I only say that because Milwaukee bought them out, and since then I've never seen any of the Empire tools/accessories get restocked.

Same here. They closed the big Sears at the local mall a few years ago, and now we have the Hometown store which is owned locally. Kinda nice since there are only a few people who works there, and they know me and DW from ordering online and picking them up very often. I do enjoy meeting and chatting with them.

The bad thing is that there are a lot of items that they do not carry, and I can not order online to pick up in store. One item that come to mind is the 36 inch pry bar.

Also can not use my points at the store. Very strange that they have something that is not available online. I was looking at mechanic gloves this past weekend, and they have size L, but online only has size M and XL.

My nearest Hometown store currently is about 45 minutes away, in a direction I only have reason to go about once a year. I doubt they'll get very many people jumping to sign on to open more Sears franchise locations at this phase of the company's life, so when the mall stores close, that'll probably be the end for people areas that don't already have a semi-convenient Hometown store, except for orders large enough for ship-to-home.

When the Sears mall store near a relative closed a couple years ago, they said Sears ran some ads in the local newspaper trying to find someone interested in opening a Hometown store to replace it. No such luck yet.

Ah, I see. I'll post here if I end up being able to get one. It's the 7" red high-vis rafter square... I liked its features better than the equivalent 7" Empire-branded version, but it wasn't high enough on my Sears wish list yet and then they disappeared... :dunno:

This is true. I recently bought a jigsaw and had it shipped to me. When I took a look at the purchase online (I didn't check the address on the box), it came from a Sears in some mall on the west coast of Florida. So they are basically using the stores for distribution and emptying the stores that way.

I ordered 4 oven thermometers that were sent from a store on the other side of the state. Box was inverted? with packing labels on the inside of it. Thought it as weird until reading the last page of comments.

I guess the mattress dept was too far away, so they just spread out appliances and vacs in the former electronics dept at my nearest store.

Half the tool dept's floor space now has fitness equipment spread out on it.

I think it was about a year ago that the General brand replaced the Empire stuff at stores near me, and now most of the General stuff is being cleared out for 50% off.

Might have been 2-3 yrs ago that I first noticed a return address had a Sears store in it. The number of issues with my shipped orders has steadily grown since then.

You may still find Gladiator items at some Sears stores.

All of it was discounted and removed from the shelves and hooks at my nearest store. At some point the prices went back up to normal, so the staff just put the remaining items back on display as if they never had any plans to clear it all out. :wtf:

Only at Sears does "clearance" pricing have an expiration date instead of lasting until they actually run out of the items. :headscrat Seen it happen with some other products earlier this year, don't recall which though. They were on clearance until around a week before Father's Day, and then they never went back on clearance afterwards.

The 77" rack we all enjoy, is down to $277 or so at my store. Similar price drop on a cabinet and other pieces, like 5% maybe. Only thing they had was a long solid shelf for their storage system, and that was 50% off, down to $30

It is made by Waterloo and they had their own version called Maxtrak which I think has been phased out. They also made the Husky ones. You can also do an internet search for "Yourtools trackwall" and it is the same but cheaper than Craftsman for the most part. It can be purchased at Walmart.com, Amazon and HomeDepot.com.
