My local store has some in-stock and had points to burn, so I placed an online order for pickup. I'll try to get by there this afternoon and let you guys know.

Someone should confirm if these are USA, as shipping is listed as unavailable so possibly they are just clearing them out and not going Chinese. Only store I know that used to have USA as of a few months back is 100 miles away or I would check.

Bummer but not unexpected. Cold Chisel set COO China.

If you want a nearly complete USA Craftsman chisel/punch set this 20 piece one at HJ Epstein looks nice for $48:

https://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/20-piece-usa-craftsman-punch-and-chisel-set.html

Also comes with handy canvas roll but, of course, doesn’t take your SYW points and coupons.

That is a nice roll! Too much OOP for me, but some of you can probably justify it.

craftsmanchiselsetinpouch_1.jpg

Here was what I think was the 20-piece set's page on Sears.com (no longer available to order), with no mention of it coming with a roll - was that something Harry Epstein Co. added for it?

Thanks Ineed! That’s my closest Sears store; about 20 minutes away. It is a full sized Sears store and I didn’t know any Outlet stuff was sold there. This was listed as refurbished and “Good” condition. I’ll report back after I pick it up.
Well did you get it?

It’s ready for pickup. I’ll stop in tomorrow and report on the condition. I’ll give it to my son in law. He doesn’t have any tool cabinet yet and, if the listed tools are actually with it, about 80% of them will be things he doesn’t have. Based on the reviews it will be a decent starter setup for him.

Thanks again for the post!

The large list of mostly-Kmart closures expected last week still hasn't come out, but a few new Sears closings have trickled out.

http://www.businessinsider.com/sears-closing-9-stores-list-2018-4 (posted 4/16)

" The list of stores that Sears is closing this year continues to grow.

The company is terminating the leases on nine stores in California, Nevada, Iowa, and Illinois, according to government filings and Sears employees who spoke to Business Insider.

The stores will close in July and liquidation sales will begin on April 27 at most stores, employees said. All nine stores are owned by Seritage Growth Properties
...
Here's the list of closing Sears stores so far:
Sunrise Mall, 5900 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, CA 95610
Westfield Galleria at Roseville, 1191 Galleria Blvd., Roseville, CA 95678
Solano Town Center, 1420 Travis Blvd., Fairfield, CA 94533
Parkway Plaza, 575 Fletcher Pkwy, El Cajon, CA 92020
Meadowood Mall, 5400 Meadowood Mall Cir., Reno, NV 89502
Lindale Mall, 4600 1st Ave NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402
Marketplace at Six Corners, 4730 W Irving Park Rd., Chicago, IL 60641

Business Insider reported this week that the following Sears and Kmart locations would also close:
Sears at 3500 Oleander Dr, Wilmington, NC 28403
Sears at 7401 Market St, Youngstown, OH 44512
Kmart at 1602 W Brandon Blvd, Brandon, FL 33511
Kmart at 180 Main St, Saugus, MA 01906 "

[Update 4/19: The Asheville, NC Sears should be on this list too. Same liquidation timeframe.]

[Update 4/20: And now 2 more Sears: Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes Barre, PA and Warrenton, VA.]

What’s missing?

I don’t pretend to know all the chisel or punch sets Craftsman ever offered, but for one example I don’t believe the HJ Epstein set includes the 3 piece, 12 inch long chisel set discussed here in past couple days.

The "Tax Day" 10% off sale on all tools sold by Sears, that was originally scheduled to run 4/15 and 4/16 only, has been extended through today 4/17 online.

I also noticed this morning that the $25 free shipping threshold, which had for several months now been scheduled to end on May 5 (likely to be extended again, as it has several times already since it became $25 last fall, down from $35), is claiming today that it ends today (Apr 17). I'm guessing this was a mistake made when someone edited the Tax Day sale's end date last night. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

There goes the last well run Sears in my area. Sad.

Argh, I *knew* they were going to do this BS but I ordered last night to be safe. I had another $3.36 in my account today from that magazine thing... Oh well, I'm sure there will be more I'll buy in the coming week... I don't know why things like this surprise me anymore...

Yeah, this time I wonder if it happened because the Sears employee who set up the sale didn't realize at first about the DC-only holiday on 4/16 that, in addition to 4/15 falling on a weekend, delayed the actual "Tax Day" to 4/17 this year. I know they sometimes randomly extend sales anyway, but a "Tax Day" sale that ended before the actual "Tax Day" was kinda silly. ;)

Wow, Sears Hometown is getting really desperate to convince more people to open franchise locations. They now charge no franchise/license/royalty fees, cover all the inventory costs (you basically sell on consignment), and are saying you can open one with as little as $20k cash on hand. http://www.ownasearsstore.com/

I've noticed them advertising on tv too. Everyone saying "we own this." really trying to separate from the Sears ship

Or maybe not. As I say now and again, “Sears gonna Sears!”

For anyone not following along, allow me to recap. Sunday evening poster Ineedtools listed a Sears Outlet deal for this box and tool set:

https://www.searsoutlet.com/Craftsm...e=seeAll&itemSelectionType=all&invId=37977139

It was listed as Reconditioned, in Good condition, for $11.93. Quite a discount from the regular $179 price. The pickup location was my local full size Sears store, which is not a Sears Outlet. I ordered it online Sunday evening. My expectations were, of course, quite low.

Sunday evening Sears Outlet sent me an email message confirming my order but also stating the item was not in the store and “is still in the warehouse.” Late Monday morning Sears Outlet sent a second email stating the item was “ready for pickup at Sears Outlet” but listing the address of my local Sears store. This morning I went to the Sears store to pick it up.

After about an 8 to 10 minute wait a manager comes out together with an employee pushing a hand cart loaded with a much different toolbox. The manager asks if this was the box I ordered. I said “No, I don’t believe so.” He then asked if I had ordered the 5 drawer box from Sears Outlet. He then apologized; he didn’t have that box in the store and had been confused when the order came in. Would I accept this box on the hand cart instead?

The one on the hand cart was this box, with slight damage:
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-41-i...lerId=SEARS&prdNo=12&blockNo=12&blockType=G12

There’s a small dent on the back corner of the lid, with some paint chipped around it. Drawers all work. Lid works. Keys and owners manual inside. While I think he might have thought I was serious, I jokingly asked if it had the tool kit and then had it quickly loaded before he could change his mind!

So, thanks again to Ineedtools for your post. You never know where something at Sears is going to end up. The pic below is the box I ended up with for less than $12.

I'm not a fan of friction slides, and the drawers were rated for 25 lbs for what you ordered.

So you got an upgrade in that area with the ball-bearing slides, with drawers rated for 75 lbs.

Does anyone know anything about the tool brand "Powertec"? It seems like Sears has replaced most of the Craftsman bench tools with ones branded "Powertec".

I grabbed this safety pusher set a few months back though Kmart, as that was the surprise point offer. Everything came in a brown cardboard box with absolutely no documentation. Finish seemed fine for what they are, but I haven't had a chance to use yet, hopefully better than scrap wood ;)

My coupon cabin plugin for Chrome just poped up, and said they are offering 7% (3% + 4% bonus) cashback for Sears purchases. So for those that do contribute to Sears bottom line, might be something to look at. I know most other cashback sites stopped with Sears a while ago (when they would still payout on stuff paid in points, haha)

Sears has been up and down from third-party cashback site participation for the past year or two. They'll disappear for a few months to save up some budget for it, then reappear on some of the cashback sites for a little while, then gone again when they burn through that budget...

A number of Craftsman-branded products have quietly been rebrands of Powertec products for quite some time. I think I posted in here a while ago about buying the Powertec-branded band clamp online from sears.com at half the price of the identical Craftsman-branded version available in stores.

This pro reviewer liked the Powertec bandsaw, but said their quality control is inconsistent. https://www.toolnerds.com/saws/bandsaw/benchtop/powertec-bs900-review/

More reviews of many of their products are available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=lp_303...rh=n:228013&ie=UTF8&qid=1523987077&scn=228013

I see their push-stick set has a high rating (as does my band clamp).

That is retailed $205. That has got to be one of the top deal in this thread.

I have visited several outlet store. Tool box with a lot more damage than little dent/scratch is never discounted that much. I think you got a great deal here.

Wow, that's crazy. I wonder if existing stores will get those perks? I know my store owner was telling me Sears had him keep a very large sum of money sitting in escrow to cover his inventory.

You got an awesome deal for $12!!! That other box is REALLY small, almost kids size, and they are friction slides. Though I suppose the socket set could be halfway decent. Still, I would rather have that 41" box that you got, that is great!

No idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had left the prior franchisees under less-favorable contract terms than what they've resorted to now to attract new franchisees. Maybe mention it next time you see him, he might be able to renegotiate better terms if they're desperate enough not to lose any existing locations.

I talked to a franchise owner a few years back. I remember him telling me that there was no inventory cost for him. Everything was basically sent out on consignment. He seemed to think it was a great deal.

That store closed about six months later....

I just picked up some of those Famous black hoses at one of these stores.

Cannot really see the use of them. They have a limited selection, that is covered by other stores. Just don't see this as viable. I saw no reason to ever go back there.

I think the uses of Hometown stores are mainly, pick up things you ordered with points on sears.com that didn't qualify for free home shipping (if you don't have a corporate Sears nearby anymore), and (at older locations) temporarily (it will run out sooner or later) have access to some old US-made stock of Craftsman products that are now made elsewhere or discontinued. With Craftsman stuff about to show up in Lowe's, and supposedly moving more products back to US production later this year, that may give them even less reason for being.

Not available for me but thought might be available for other member here. imo pretty good deal.

Craftsman 3 pc. Cold Chisel Set $12. Chisels are 12" long and come in 5/8", 3/4" and 7/8" sizes. Not sure if it is US made.

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-pc...=13166739&utm_medium=1122587_4485850_13166739

I picked up my 3 piece chisel set today. COO is China. I did look on the shelf and this must have been the last one. There are still two of the USA made 6 piece Craftsman punch and chisel sets left that were half price sometime in the fall.

I have to install an exterior electric box and run the Romex through a brick and block basement wall.

Yeah what was crazy is some items you could pickup at the HomeTown store (if it was in stock or had to be shipped). Some items you could only pickup at a regular Sears store... No rhyme or reason why...

My Hometown store sells mostly appliances and lawn & garden... I can only reason that people buy their appliances there if Sears has some crazy special, or they are just older folk that are diehard Sears shoppers... They do sell a lot of lawn equipment too, even though Lowe's & HD are not that far away. I think really it's all about location, location, location...

I hope the local store near me is doing well. Not because so I can order more free items, but I get to know the owner and people who works there. I don't want them to lose their jobs. There are 3 other local stores within 40 miles that are now closed.

I will admit that it is hard to understand how they can make good profit. Every time I am there, they never have a lot of customers. But maybe they do plenty of business when I am not there.

A stock analyst guy says that Sears Hometown/Outlet overall sales revenue is 72% from appliances, 13% from lawn/garden (mostly mowers and other outdoor power tools), 8% from tools/paint, and 7% other stuff. It doesn't take nearly as many people coming in to buy large appliances and mowers to add up to enough sales as it would if the revenue were mostly coming from tools.

So now that we're a few minutes into 4/18...

Sears did not extend the "Tax Day" sale another day, even though the IRS actually had to move the tax deadline to 4/18 unexpectedly due to technical difficulties yesterday.

And more importantly they did NOT fix the free shipping threshold!! :wtf: It is back to $35 now, nearly 3 weeks before what was supposed to be the next possible date for them to revert from $25. And it's now claiming it will remain at $35 through August 4.

I was going to say I'm seeing free shipping above $30, which I am, but I also see $35. Guess it is depends on your account.

I’m seeing $30 AND $35 on the same page for same item! Shows $30 in the box by the price and $35 in the “Special Offers” crawl above the item description.

Sears gonna Sears.

I assume you are referring to the garden hoses?

The famous ones were USA made and hexagon shaped. But the newest ones are round and made in China. If you got the USA ones, you are lucky. If not, I would be interested to know how they hold up.
