Some other updates on the status of the company:
  • Eddie (ESL)'s $150 million in loans to Transformco, posted a couple weeks ago, has been joined by $100 million from an outside investor. That should at least keep the remaining stores going a little while longer, but the more the number of stores shrinks, the harder the fixed costs are to keep up with.
  • From the CEO's LinkedIn page, the buyer of the split-off Sears Outlet stores, 'Franchise Group' (owner of Liberty Tax), will be renaming Sears Outlet to something else that will be announced in January 2020. With fewer and fewer Sears stores to send them damaged/discontinued products, I guess they want to broaden the stores' scope to taking in unwanted merchandise from other chains too.
  • The number of remaining Sears Hometowns is down to just 414 as of the recent completion of the acquisition by Transformco. So they've lost hundreds of locations just this year too. Some were the franchisees wanting out, others were SHOScorporate forcing them out due to not enough merchandise to stock all the stores.
  • From an anonymous Sears employee on Reddit, about the smaller stores Sears corporate had been testing that was supposed to be the future of the company: "Home and Life is dead as a concept. The team responsible for it was canned in one of the rounds of layoffs over the spring [2019], hence no new openings since the initial 4 and then the cancellation of the leaked Boston area store."
  • Also from Reddit, for stores in the test market for the $99/yr 'Sears Plus' program we were talking about recently ( https://www.businessinsider.com/sea...azon-prime-style-membership-discounts-2019-10 ) , it is being pushed heavily at the registers because employees will receive $10 for each customer they sign up for it. And any employees caught saying anything negative about 'Sears Plus' (whether internally or to customers) are being threatened with being fired. So I guess this is supposed to be the new future of the company.
  • Also from Reddit, the southeast may now be at risk of more Sears closings in the next round, probably to be announced shortly after Christmas. Transformco just sold the Ocala, Florida distribution center's building last week, which services "FL, GA, SC, and NC". "MS, AL, and TN are already devoid of stores."

It doesn't matter it seems with sears... it's poorly managed in some shift and the store manager is in bed with some of them... past 3 orders, I have been waiting for 30 minutes to pick up my items. their kiosk was broke, and none of them can find any product in the bins they are supposed to be in. One time they lost my item for week and 1/2 , the other they couldn't find it and went to the return isle to give me the scratched and dented leveler (4' ones)... last time 2 days ago, I just waited 30 minutes... so consider your 10 minute quick... I don't think they are motivated to work when store manager hire friend and family members.

Farmington NM finally going away. I kept expecting that one like 5 lists ago.

And yeah, I wouldn't trust anything from closing stores. I once worked at a corporate retail clothing store that was closing its doors. We just started giving away clothes to friends, etc. The mgr sold all the retail fixtures and pocketed most of the cash, telling corporate she received far less. Corporate did NOT care, they just wanted the matter closed.

I was late teens back then and my morals were more "flexible" - I'd feel bad about doing the same thing now. Then again I wouldn't fold clothes all day for under $7/hr now, either

Strategically gambling that I'll either get the air compressor or request a refund before they go out of business, when should I make the refund request? Two weeks before Christmas?,....one week before?
I'm really tempted to throw in the towel now, as I don't think the real seller (CPO Outlets) wanted to let it go at that price ($239.34).

Factors to consider:

If you earned any significant amount of points on that purchase that you've already spent or plan to spend, cancelling will screw all that up, so you might want to wait longer before giving up.

If you did ship-to-store and your local store is on the new closing list, you might want to give up sooner rather than later.

If you spent money/points on it that you wish you'd have back to spend on other stuff for Black Friday, cancel at least 10 days before Thanksgiving to have time for the refund to process.

If your store isn't closing currently or you did home shipping, and you don't mind floating the money a while longer, it'd probably be fine to wait till close to Christmas. Considering that most people apparently received their compressor already, I'm not sure what's going to happen to the orders that haven't already been fulfilled, but there is still some chance.

I wanted to return something I purchased at a Sears store in Canton, Ohio, at the store in North Olmsted Ohio. I made the purchase a couple weeks ago and the store was running as usual. Today, I was shocked when I was told I could not return something purchased there since they are liquidating. I was surprised, as that is not a store on the list, and they just began a complete renovation in April! The news articles announcing the closing are dated October 23, just a couple of days after I was there. I wonder how many other stores are closing that didn't make the announcement.

One of the managers told me that Sears is doing away with Craftsman. That's why they are emptying their warehouses. He said they will leave Craftsman to be sold at Lowe's and Menards. They will move forward with building the Diehard brand.

I have a feeling this won’t last much longer, I’m stacking some orders for another nice points run right up until Christmas but won’t take any real gambles at the moment. I’ll top them off with the sweeps a bit.

Thanks

How did you find out about the liquidation sale?

How did they discount prices over time there, especially for tools?

Thanks

That store closed about the time Transformco was making it’s bid to buy Sears from Chapter 11. Each round of closings while in bankruptcy was on a list that Sears released. If you didn’t follow Sears in the news or places like GJ the only way anyone learned about the closing was seeing the giant canvas or plastic sign hanging on the building. I never saw any advertising of the closing in any media form.

Best way to describe tool discounting during liquidation is “slowly.” For example, while most of the rest of the store was at 50% off tools were at 20%. I didn’t buy anything.

The stealth closings are hard to keep up with, but we try... that one (Belden Village Mall, Canton, OH) wasn't noticed here till this post on Oct 30:

Another closing that I haven’t seen yet: Sears at Canton, Ohio. Closing to be completed between year end and mid January.

https://www.cantonrep.com/news/20191023/sears-to-close-belden-village-mall-store-in-january

Regardless, that is absurd that something bought while the store was still operating under normal conditions (I assume there were no liquidation signs posted yet when you bought your item or you would have noticed then) would become unreturnable at other still-operating-normally stores later.

If anyone here still has a non-closing Kmart, there's a nice in-store-only deal going on:

"Members get $20 CASHBACK in points on $50+ at select Kmart Stores. Points award next day and are valid for 14 days. MAX 1 PER DAY PER MEMBER. Cannot Combine. Offer Valid from 10/13/2019 - 11/27/2019"

Similar offer for online purchases comes in 2 installments instead of all at once.

They are not motivated to work because they know they are working on a sinking ship.

I dunno what you ordered, but this been mentioned before here, if you are ordering more than $10, you can get free shipping to your home by ordering via PS. There is no reason doing pick-up at stores, even if the store is right next to your house.

Hexen, after a couple calls, asking for the manager to come over, and pointing out the return policy on the bottom of my receipt, they apologized and were able to complete my return. The manager also told me that the Canton store was not owned by Sears. I thought that was strange, since I thought only the Hometown stores were owned by others outside of corporate. Sears is too much to keep track of, lol.

I have items I purchased online (before they announced the close) to pick up at the Canton store. I'm wondering if I should just cancel them, instead of taking a chance at not being able to retrieve them, as that store is more than an hour away from me.

each time i see one of these lists i keep saying to myself, how did the (sort of) local kmart escape this cut? prices are high and the store is dead and the only ppl that work there are high school kids or ladies that look like theyre in their 80s. not dissing either, but neither set know a damn thing and the old women at the registers literally use stools and have to call someone to go to the online order rack fifteen feet away or use a cane to get there.

well finally its their time. another stealth closing announced locally

The one on Amazon says +/- 1/8" in the description and +/- 1/4" in one of the photos
The Craftsman version is newer, and shows "± 1/8 in."

I guess that Prexiso version was upgraded to "accuracy to 1/8" ", but they forgot to update the photo on Amazon. :dunno:

Craftsman-penlaser-package.jpg

Yeah, it's definitely not the greatest deal at OOP, but those getting more cashback points than they know what to do with should consider it. :)

The Craftsman version also has the advantage of having an aluminum body.

I was looking for that attachment, and got excited seeing the link. But it doesn't look like it is for a rotary tool, if the picture is correct. Looks like it has a 1/4" hex connection.

Can anyone confirm if this goes on the end of a Dremel, or is just a 1/4" flex adapter

I have been baffled by that product for a while. The description talks about using it for drilling and driving. Maybe the title was written by someone who didn't know that not all tools that rotate are rotary tools, lol. https://www.sears.com/craftsman-9-in-flex-shaft/p-00926270000P

They also have a 1/4" SOCKET flex extension: https://www.sears.com/craftsman-flex-extension-bar-1-4-in-drive/p-00904336000P

I don't remember ever using any Dremels that can go as low as 1,200 RPM, but I looked at the package to be sure that this item has nothing to do with rotary tools. BTW, it's made in Taiwan.

I've been on the lookout for these new DieHard tools for two months, but now I see the new stuff coming out is branded Craftsman. Also, some old Craftsman tools appear to have a new manufacturer, so there was another missed chance to brand them as 'DieHard'.

I'm going to assume the DieHard tools thing was just a rumor.

Google pulls up a Sears Express for Canton. I thought that concept was killed off a long time ago.

It's a gamble with ship-to-store orders at a closing store. Some got their orders, some didn't.

About a year and a half ago a full remodel was started at the Canton (Belden Village) Sears. I recall seeing something about the resulting downsized space being changed to a new Sears of the future concept, but that must have stopped soon after.

That manager is about half informed. Sears used to own their building at Belden Village Mall in Canton, OH. They sold the building to Seritage Growth Properties, another one of Fast Eddie’s businesses, and then leased it back. Sears has been in that same building since the Mall was built in 1970.

https://www.cantonrep.com/news/20191023/sears-to-close-belden-village-mall-store-in-january

This property is an excellent example of how Fast Eddie has made money by keeping Sears barely alive for about a decade. The second floor, formerly part of the Sears store, is now leased to a restaurant chain.

They'd been hoping to do that 'downsize Sears to fit on the first floor and lease out the second floor to something else' plan in more locations, but I think it mostly fizzled (often couldn't find willing tenants). Except for locations where the entire mall has 2 stories, it meant customers of the second-floor businesses would have to wander through Sears to find the often-broken Sears escalators to get up there. The entire Sears buildings themselves have been neglected so much for decades, most malls seem to just tear it down and rebuild when a Sears closes.

The upstairs is going to house a Dave and Busters and they are remodeling to create a separate entrance.

Since nobody in the auto store would answer, I spoke to someone in the store and found out the auto store is closed.

When the two Sears closed near me, either the auto centers were closed prior to or at the start of the closing sales. They placed displays of auto stuff Near the tool section. Granted most of the stuff I never saw in the auto stores beforehand.
I’m sure most of it was brought in by the liquidator. Lots of other stuff showed up too which Sears typically does not stock in its stores.

I walked through a couple of the auto stores at other locations and there wasn’t a lot to buy anyway.

must have been on the updated list...i always scan for it when you post new ones, as well as any WV stores.

either way...perfect excuse to get me out of the game

Yes, the initial partial list I posted was on Nov 6, and that store was one of the additional entries I posted about adding in all-caps on Nov 7 when the official list finally came out around 5pm.

Anyone else who missed my update posts and thought your stores were safe, please do take a second look to make sure. :) https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8165206&postcount=12968

There was one teensy-tiny rack of auto-dept tools in my (still fully operational) store when I bought the auto-dept-version US-made filter pliers a few months ago, and a few single-sided shelf segments of cleaning supplies and floor mats and such. Most of the floor space that used to be full of two-sided shelves full of automotive stuff was gone, now just used to display some widely-spaced tires stacked on the floor.

I don't remember exactly how much earlier the auto departments have been closing, but they have always (edit: with a few weird exceptions) closed those earlier than the other parts of closing stores.

Oddly enough, in Jackson, MI the auto center has remained open, even though the store closed some time ago. Another store in Michigan remains open but they shuddered the auto center several years ago and the freestanding building it was in remains empty. Sears' actions often remain a mystery to me.

Are you referring to the Grandville Sears? I've only been to that store a few times and found it odd the auto center was on opposite ends of the mall from the store itself. I drove past the Jackson store a couple months ago and they had huge signs to announce that they're still open after the main store closed in late 2018.

Thanks. I never knew there was a tool for that. Has anyone used this Craftsman tool? Home Depot wants $6.95 for the Husky version, none at Harbor Freight. Any other versions out there?

I bought the Craftsman cotter pin removal tool earlier this year. I posted about it again when I saw it come up in the blowout sale several weeks ago, too. It has a great handle that matches the trim removal tools set, no longer available on any other Craftsman tools. And the hook has a particular twisty angle to it that is different from all other hook/pick tools I own or have looked at. I think it's worth having, especially at current prices!

Oddly enough, I was wanting to buy the cotter pin tool when I saw it on sale and added it to my cart to buy later.... Was out in my garage just a minute ago and there sat the pin tool; I had bought it a couple weeks ago and totally forgot about it... Wild...

It looks like a nice tool but Ive yet to use it. Its rather large, so Im not sure how it will work on small pins.
