I received the 5 piece specialty ratchet set marked “made in Taiwan” on the box today. The offset, stubby and “long handle” ratchets were marked L-AJ the flex head was the old style (rough finish handle) and coded A-AG. Didn’t see a code on the Gimbal palm. The parts list is dated 7/2016 for the set, everything was in a nice plastic bag-decent deal for $50 minus coupons and points.

I don't have the gimbal palm unit but it looks similar to one from Husky that I have.

Not sure who L supplier is. J would be a recent date code, AH was last year. J would be this year I'm pretty sure. They accidentally sent me some breaker bars that were from this year that were Transform SR packaging made in July or August. I'll check those after dinner and update the post later but I'm pretty sure those are Z (great star) AJ (2019).

"A" code is most likely Apex. It isn't confirmed but those box end and open end wrenches had a weird mix of date codes and the one had all the way back to Danaher coded ones and Danaher became Apex tool group.

I think they're just packaging open stock stuff sent back from closing stores and loose stuff from warehouses together into these "sets" to match sets they at one time had for the build a set packages. Maybe some of it was stuff for warranty replacements that they never ended up using just because its not common enough to go through tons of them in warranty. All the open stuff stock at the one closing here was all packaged up and shipped out somewhere.

If they're doing that it probably gets them through stock faster than selling odd individual wrenches and parts on their website and they can clear more stock quickly since I know they're closing that big warehouse down in Florida in like March or something.

Edit forgot to mention two more Ball Peen hammers are back.

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-16-...sellerId=SEARS&prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-12-...sellerId=SEARS&prdNo=3&blockNo=3&blockType=G3

Dunno if they're still USA made though. This is the 32oz I posted a few days ago

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-32-...sellerId=SEARS&prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2

They were still USA Made as of summer of 2017 when I bought some.

Edit 2: AJ is the 2019 date code.

I ordered quite a few of the wooden handle hammers over the last two years and they have all been Made in the USA. Perhaps they're still that way. I will be going to the last open Sears by me this weekend and will see what they have for tool selection.

I am curious to who supplier "L" is. Recently I was rummaging through my tool box to see what I have and don't have (to avoid triples) and noticed I have a ratchet with either L-AH or L-AJ on it, not totally sure. Either way, I am curious since I have a few "L" identified tools and they have a more quality feel and finish to them like much of the Z-coded Great Star.

On a side note... my Kmart has seen a huge uptick in Great Star made tools on the shelves, the majority of which seem to be pretty decently made. I still much prefer Western Forge built tools, but I can accept the Great Star tools as an acceptable alternative and/or addition to my collection of my WF Craftsman, SK, Midwest, and Channelock tools.

The XL ratcheting box wrenches I just purchased are mostly L-AH and they are identical to GearWrench, so I would wager a guess it is Apex. The box said they were made in Taiwan.

The raised panel double box end wrenches seem to be gone from the website again. I've yet to see a discounted price on these, but I've only been watching them for a couple months.

Wonder if L is Taiwanese Apex and A is China then. My long handles should be here today when I get home so I’ll update later.

These were not new stock they were sitting around long enough to still have danaher stamps on some. The newest wrench in the set was like 3 years old.

I still think the sets may have been assembled from loose open stock they had warehoused somewhere for warranties or otherwise.

I believe “L" is a Taiwanese factory (Lea Way Hand Tool Corp) owned by Apex that produces the Gearwrench tools and I believe the Evolv impact sockets.

http://www.apextoolgroup.com/content/gearwrench-1965-taiwan-factory

So Apex would have made these in 2019, well some of them anyway🤷🏻****♂️

Sorry I thought I posted this last night but it got saved as a draft !!

Well here’s a new one. The long handle wrenches have a wrench stamped as L-AI however J is the current code. This is out of the metric set. The metric set is L-AG, L-AH, LA-I.

The SAE set is L-AF, L-AG and L-AH. They’re both still spanning a 3 year period. Boxes brand look new and they came in heat sealed bags.

Wonder about the LA-I did they just guess on the letter sequence early? Even so they were then still making stuff for Sears after bankruptcy since LA-I would be the equivalent of 2019 date codes like AJ.

I received the craftsman 37 piece 3/8 impact set today and looked at the set, came in a plastic tray. The codes were S-AF thru S-AJ

So here’s my theory, the manufacturer whips up thousands of sockets, they sell some to sears, the rest sit, next time sears orders they use them however, which explains why so many of these sets are cobbled together with various years pieces, etc. Probably costs them less to produce and store extra then to reset the machines for the various companies they produce them for.

I suspect it’s the same thing with the made in the USA hammers that are popping up again. Vaughn has them stored. No way they’re just sitting in the sears warehouses. They don’t have that much stock to begin with anymore.

This was just marked down today to $50.97: https://www.sears.com/craftsman-28-pc-standard-and-metric-6-pt/p-00944098000P?rrec=true

I pulled the trigger since I had points expiring tomorrow. There are some reviews as late as 2017 that state this set is made here. Shipping would have been 14.99 but I was fortunate to be able to have them shipped to my local Kmart so on February 4th or 5th I will have them. As soon as I receive them I will update the COO.

Thing is Vaughan and Apex I think had outstanding disputes during bankruptcy. So at the least case anything with new production codes means these issues may have been resolved. Stuff with all old codes is probably sitting around somewhere. There is some big warehouse in florida they sold but I believe they’re vacating by March. I mean this could be open stock stuff they had on hand and are just cobbling sets together out of it. Vaughan made more than just those ball peen hammers, I dunno why they’d order only those if they did, I’d imagine the mini sledge would be a another more specialized hammer they’d order in that case.

It could even be a combo of those factors too just depending on the item. The box end wrenches (non ratcheting) we’re all older date codes and hadn’t been available for over a year, given the downsizing of the tool dept I find it hard to believe Sears would randomly suddenly order double box end wrenches from a supplier they were having issues with during bankruptcy. I can’t see any sudden demand springing up (other than that they were substantially cheaper than most box end sets still available since it seems only companies like Proto make them).

If they’ve been gone for a long time you could literally get anything depending on whether they’re new, sent back from some store to a warehouse, or old stuff sitting in a warehouse.

95 piece impact set is $222.97

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-95-...lerId=SEARS&prdNo=10&blockNo=10&blockType=G10

Looks like Sears is carrying Einhell now. Also some AC Delco stuff in. Gearwrench stuff coming back. Saw a few other stray oddities combing around Kmart's website earlier yesterday.

With some of the points/freecash there are still deals to be had here. If you got the 95 piece impact you'd get the $100 on $100, just wish it was in $25 installments.

The evolv 40 piece impact got the price lowered again, $44.88 and not a hot buy. That’s a steal:

D*** wish I am still in the game. Pretty sure overall I paid more for separate sets + singles. At this price it is worth getting another set, would be perfect for something I can throw in the back of the car when I am taking long trips since it comes with a case.

I could use some hand saws too...

Nice. It beats the previous low of $45.31.

I don't see a clearance tag on the page, but that $**.88 pricing is usually used for that. Coupons can be applied until they add the tag.

$5 off $35 on tools coupon

Three of the available sizes are different in the Evolv 10pc sets.

10pc sets: 1", 22mm, 24mm.

40pc set: 3/8", 16mm, 18mm

I noticed the wood-handle ones look different from the previous versions that had blades made in Denmark.

I guess they're now coming from Great Star.

As soon as I see them on the shelves of my Kmart I will snap a pictures and share it.

I finally received the 28-piece six-point wrench set today. The plating is very bright compared to my WF set and overall finish is better than much of the China made stock I've used. The markings on these wrenches are A-AF, A-AG, A-AH, and A-AJ so I doubt that there were sitting somewhere in the depths of a slow-moving warehouse collecting dust; more like a conglomeration of wrenches from boxes on hand to make a set. The tracking number goes back to Hodgkins, Illinois, which is where everything I've ordered has come from with the exception of a solo NJ based delivery. Not a bad set for $15 and change.

NJ deliveries are usually from a big Kmart warehouse in PA that’s right on the border of NJ, the UPS main processing hub is in NJ. Based on the size of the warehouse I bet it’s being used to service most of the east coast these days as well as e-commerce. Everything I’ve found suggests a lot of operations were consolidated to it, which makes sense if it’s near a UPS hub.

There are a lot of Sears hometowns in the Midwest and much of the Sears stuff seems to come from warehouses in that area unless it’s out of a store directly.

I’m guessing these wrenches based on date codes are either excess open stock they would have sold if they still had more stores packaged into sets, extras for warranties, or some combination of those.

I’ve finally and temporarily exhausted virtually all my points deals. Otherwise I’d have ordered one to see how they were.

They're not at the local Sears yet, so I can't take a photo. I also noticed that they used the same models numbers, but the TPI has dropped a small amount.

Sears is closing the following stores in New Jersey:
Livingston, New Brunswick, Freehold, Moorestown and Woodbridge leaving ONLY 3 stores left in NJ.
Liquidation sales are going on now!...... You Jersey guys "MAY" find some deals at the above stores, so check it out!

BTW! The New Brunswick NJ store was my "go to store" for catalog pick ups and tools since 1967 when they were a retail powerhouse!...... Sad to witness a "long slow death" of a once great retail giant. The New Brunswick Sears WAS a stand alone two floor store with a huge detached auto service center that was always very busy back in the day.

That's funny I googled Woodbridge, my go to, a couple hours ago and I did not see anything. It would not come up as a ship to store. My grandfather and I got many a tool from Woodbridge and Watchung.

For what it's worth, I was still able to order something to be shipped to the New Brunswick store... not so with Woodbridge.

Craftsman Laser Distance Measure (50-ft / 15-m) - $14.94

For anyone with points left to burn, I picked up one of these after Thanksgiving and have found it handy for getting quick, approximate measurements:

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-laser-distance-measure-50ft-15m/p-A059679301

It appears to be available for shipping... and is actually in-stock at a couple of the remaining stores by me. It's not a Hot Buy, so any coupons should work.

I think I paid around $22 for it... and am thinking of getting another. I checked it against a Lufkin tape measure... and it was well within 1/8th of an inch at about 10 feet.
