In the morning I go out to the garage and turn on the air conditioner and coffeemaker. While the coffee is brewing I turn on the air conditioner in the shop (remote switch). By the time I've checked my e-mail and GJ in the office, the garage and shop are cool and I can comfortably procrastinate my unfinished projects. The 100-foot walk from the garage to the shop reminds me why I avoid unnecessary outdoor projects in South Florida's early summer/summer/late summer months.

[edit] I do work outside during our 4th (tourist) season when the license plates change color.

Wish I could do the same. Yep on some days, the 100 foot walk will get you sweating. At least you have the pool to walk in on the return trip.

That's a good one, fourth season.

How much do you want for the blue bin? It looks like it may fit my stack rack. Keep out of the lightning.

My brother was going to see if his work wanted to buy it for a wire recycle bin. The price is $100. Let me check with him to see if he is going to get it.

Do you really save much turning it off? I've finally taken to just leaving mine on, mainly so it's ready when I can get out there.

Time to catch up from the last two weekends of making some productive headway. If you remember from a few post back, I have a plan, the gerarded plan! :headscrat

To help one get their bearings, the area on the left represents the 8-foot deep rear mezzanine and the 20-foot deep front mezzanine is on the right above the garage door and office. Gerard's suggestion was to make the rear mezzanine the office/lounge/kitchenette and the front all storage. I was going to use half of the large mezzanine since the electrical panel was directly below and a window. What's adding 40-foot of conduit so the office could be in back? I thought about it and liked the idea, same work sans running the extra conduit.

So let the garage Tetris aka the Plan begin.

Here is the back mezzanine. I had cleaned half it off by the time I remembered to snap a pic.

The next picture is the new layout. I will build a wall to close off this area from the shop. When sitting at the drafting table, I'll have a window so I can look out onto the shop floor.

The cabinets on the right will be moved against the wall behind me once I get the roof leak fixed. This area will be the kitchenette. In the middle will be lounge area and the far end will be drawing and hopefully an airbrushing station.

Here is the front mezzanine in all it's orderly glory. Half of the boxes of stuff will probably end up in the trash or donated. Some of the boxes haven't been opened since the 80's. I have a bunch of matching bins that I'm looking forward to using so things are more uniformed.

Moving the futon, drafting table and cabinets opened a lot of space. You know what they say about an empty space....

The shelves from the back were used up front. Somehow I got lucky and the totes and bins fit the shelves like they were meant to be there.

Today I set up four shelf sections on the right side but the one picture I have is ****. These shelves are the ones that I converted from 1-foot deep to 2-deep. Because of this, the day was also spent cutting new shelf inserts. I'll finish up tomorrow so stay tuned.

Good to see some progress on this. This is first step but probably biggest step in the "G" plan. I won't give away any future plans but I can't wait to see this all come together. I'll check when I'm free to get up there again to lend a hand.

Andy, I'm probably not saving much. The fans in my A/C units run continuously with the compressor cycling on to cool. When I shut the A/C off, it's 79*F in the garage and by morning it's up to 82*F. If I don't shut it off, my wife does. She also shuts the lights off in the garage when I'm working in the shop. To save my toes I leave a small 7-watt fluorescent turned on over the end of the bench near the door that leads outside. It throws enough light that I don't need multiple night lights in the garage.

Stewart, the shop is really coming along. Maybe I should have Gerard come to my place and design a new layout. My only restriction is "no more toolboxes" [SWMBO].

Bob, you have a awesome garage and highly doubt any suggestions I have would improve it. Shortys on the other hands..... making a path is a huge improvement. LOL.

Well, the second half of task one of the G plan is complete. I can probably consolidate 1/3 of the boxes and bins due to unneeded stuff. That's for another day (like winter).

As they say, a void creates a vacuum. This cleared space will soon be filled with things from the shop floor and the house.

Looking really good!

Kitchenette, futon, are we thinking temporary residence?

Bob: If it only gets from 79 to 82 it's not much difference. I'm afraid mine would rise higher and it would eat into my shop time.

Actually, maybe. When I brought the place, I was going to build a 1000 sq. ft. loft to live in. Now I want to set it up so if I want to hang out or work late on a project, I can spend the night.

Just short bursts of QST. Since we have our house up for sell we de-cluttered so extra furniture and totes were moved to shop and stored in the mezzanine space void. I did get around to finishing the stairs to the terrace. Yes, I believe in the WWSMDND (What Would Steve-Mike-Don NOT Do) style of project completion. :headscrat

I need to put down some sod or ground cover and work on the pavers.

Another project was to remove my mom's old AC unit. I told installers I would haul off. Before using by redneck hybrid boat/utility trailer, I had to air of the tires. I thought they had dry rotten but held air. Yay!

Also, the deck was moving around and my quickie brackets were bent and twisted (rusty bracket on right). For two of the corners, I was able to use some frame tabs to attach the deck to the trailer. The other two, I had to replace the **** brackets. Looking through the metal junk pile, I found a couple of mattress headboard brackets. These are bigger, heavier gauge than before and holes were pre-drilled

The benefits of hauling of the old unit was a like new squirrel cage, a pad I can use so things aren't on direct ground, a galvanized drip pan and scrap metal.

While trailer was moved, I decided to place the pieces of old concrete floor (from lift install) down as stepping stones.

This weekend will be getting the mezzanine organized again.:dunno:

Spent some time in the loft adjusting shelf heights to fit two different totes and milk crates. This was needed for more stuff to go upstairs. 88d8da2c98aa855791d6245120116076.jpg

One of those things is the standard unused exercise equipment. The crane sure comes in handy. c864c0d92b5f4a49cd0b13a2642d634e.jpg

Spending more and more time going up and down the ladder, I noticed my fancy engineering wasn't working out. 5d497ff7274cd70f104e381ff42e0741.jpg

I decided I'd better fixed it before I try carrying a battery pack or something else up the ladder. First stop, the wood scrap box for two short 2x4s. These were individually screwed to face of joist. Then to the metal scrap to find a bracket. Cut to length and a couple of lags, I'm in business. A wheel chalk adds to the safety. a568b1e4d1f09a63cd8cc904fccf85e5.jpgcccd28bfde850638c9dfaec89ad91bdb.jpg

Another quick project I completed was the drill press stand conversion. As stated earlier, my DP stand was originally my drafting cabinet from years ago.
37dd3d17064a2c3ddd57d036a0361981.jpg
This was replaced with the Lista cabinet I was setting up a month or two ago.
5c6f732b8e6a15fed2fb05d263e8028e.jpg
The cabinet gives me a lot more room on top, plenty of storage for bits, various types drill sets, various vises and my Drill Doctor. I didn't realize I had an unopened Drill Doctor. Benefits of getting organized, you find stuff and get set up with complementary tools.

The drafting cabinet was built and used in California. Over the years, our wonderful southern humidity caused the wood to swell. A little planing with my Jim Reed sharpened plane, drawers work better. The cabinet made its way upstairs and is back serving duty as a drafting/art cabinet. 8a4fc77b38bc5e5b0c8f8e72f5961505.jpga9a2d1e21d16862c9e405cd18a02e038.jpg

I like that! I need to scrounge up a couple of those size Lista cabinets as that would be a perfect storage solution in creating a sharpening station for my planes and chisels. I could store all of my sharpening stones and Tormek jigs and accessories .

Hey Shorty. I can't believe you've managed to get all that done with the heat and all. You are a trooper for sure. All I hear from the rest of the group is a lot of whining.:spit:

Looking great! Perfect place for that Lista. Everyone should have storage near their DP.

Who's whining? The only whining I hear is from those who aren't used to the heat and humidity. You know, the ones from up north.

Thanks Dan. It's tough but has to be done. Still dealing with the remnants of my mom's move in April and now I'm moving. Have to get organized even it means looking like a Mississippi chain gang digging ditches in August.

Just when it is too hot in N Florida to swat a fly, Shorty gets revved up and into action. :willy_nil

You still have your drafting cabinet and a drafting board..... I love this thread Shorty... always something cool.

I'm wanting to design and build a cad / drafting table.. I have a vintage parallel arm drafting machine set-up in the barn.

I've used this old vintage school desk as a CAD station for the past 5 years... still have my vintage Boston Ranger 55 pencil sharpener..

Lakeroadster, thank you for thinking some things are cool. I'm just trying to get my head above water.
The drafting table I got several years ago. I wish I had my table from the Air Force. It was a single post, fully adjustable table. It was sweet. I too try to use CAD now but some projects are still easier and quicker with pencil and paper. SketchUp is also used regularly. The plan is for this area to be more art, air brush work than drafting. We'll see.

It's a good time of year to get stuff done inside. I'm not having as much success organizing my shop as you are. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Bob. All you need is to invite Gerard down for a hour look see. He's the mastermind behind most of my reorg.

The mezzanine is looking good, I love the old drafting cabinet! The picture of the elliptical hanging over the side made me laugh, I think all of us can relate to having a piece of dust collecting, good for nothing exercise machine sitting around taking up valuable space
