I got something for my 1-car that will forestall the summer 100% humidity of July and August. A 3/4-ton mini-split, from the Miami distributor. Unfortunately they don't have any pin-up calendars. Gonna have to visit the Florida chapter thread...

That will be a nice addition. Yep the humidity not the temps is what gets me during summer. Having the portable room air in office allows me to cool down then get back at it.

'shortykorte,' I haven't been all through your thread, do you have a 442 in your stable like your avatar?

Years-ago (1980's), one of my friends on the fire dept bought a 1970 W-31 442, a low-miles car in good shape but a bit weathered, it had the red fenderwells. I think it had around 45K mi on it. He took it to a good shop for paint, they did a great job, and he had the interior done by a trim shop for whatever it needed. He kept it in the garage where it shared space w/a 1974 911T that had been built into a Turbo, the work was done by an IMSA GTP team's mechanics. It was gorgeous, steel flares, beautiful lacquer burgundy body, black leather interior, a 3 liter engine I believe. It had a 4-speed, and when the tach needle approached 5K, the thing would shriek as the needle just jumped towards redline in no-time at-all. Our other buddy owned it first, he sold it to our friend, and bought a Martini & Rossi 911 turbo.

He was offered about $13K for the 442, I told him, "you told me you're into it for $8K now, sell it!" Remember this was about 1987. He decided to hold-off as it was going to be worth more in a bit.

Well, the bottom fell-out of the collector car market, and he sold it for less-than the $13K he'd been offered. He also sold the 911 targa-turbo, he offered it to me but I was saving my $ to upgrade to a better home, which was a good move, when I bought the home, which has appreciated greatly.

He also had a new 31 ft. Oceanmaster open-fisherman I helped rig, it had two Yamahas on the transom. A co-worker of ours had a dealership for Yamaha marine, and they sold a lot of motors, ranking regularly in the top-5 nationally, but they got caught in the credit crunch, and had to liquidate to cover their expenses.

Isn’t 442 is room number at your local hospital. I know the undersecretary of safety for the Florida Chapter of the Garage Journal has some pull but didn’t know you had your own reserved a room. LOL

As they say, she's the one that got away. When I got out of the Air Force, I had a '67 (avatar) and a '85. When I moved back to Florida, the 85 was sold to help finance taking over my Dad's pawnshop. The 67 wasn't for sale but I guy was driving through town, saw it and was willing to pay (what I thought was high) $3000. The car was pretty much original and needed work. I sold it because I needed a decent reliable vehicle. At 33, trying to get women to ride in an old car without air wasn't working. Top picture is when I brought it. Later I found out it was kind of rare since it had hubcaps and a bench seat, options for this model. Bottom is the way it was when I sold it. Those are Z28 rims which I think looked better on it than the Camaro. Hopefully one day, I'll have another.

If your friend would have kept his W-30, it would be worth 30-40K now.

The wheels you had on your 442 look like 1980 Z-28 wheels, is that what they were? One of my all-time favorite stock rims, right up-there w/the early-1960's Pontiac 8-bolt aluminum wheels, w/the integral brake drums. Mickey Thompson used them on some of his builds.

Around 1985, I bought a decent daily-driver 1980 Z-28 from one of my friends at the fire dept. It needed a few things done, I got it pretty-cheap, and fixed the minor mechanical stuff. Then I re-painted it in the stock body color, eliminating the two-color stripes and the tape Z-28 emblem. I painted the hood scoop a bit darker, for contrast. It turned out beautifully, and I didn't have to spend a ton of $ because one of my fire dept. co-workers sons owned a body shop. At the same time, I had a Fox-body Mustang GT. I got that under the same circumstances, and did pretty-much the same thing to it.

I think the Z-28 looked prettier, and it ran well w/a 350 4 bbl & a shift kit in the auto ******, it had posi, and those wheels. But I found the Mustang GT was better handling, and w/a 5-speed, it was fun to drive.

I sold both cars because people offered me more $ than I had in them. I had several KZ 1000's during that time and after, if I wanted to go fast. But the pony cars were fun.

Before either of those I had a couple of Trans Ams, one was a true Hurst t-Hatch 1977 Smokey & The Bandit car, which I bought from the original owner. That car got more-attention than any car I've ever-owned. Girls loved it. I kept it as a daily-driver for about ten years and sold it.

Well if it was not a great ride you would not be riding. I expected that would be your answer.

Very True

Not sure the year but yes it was probably 80-82 Z28

Well darn, I was hoping more motorcycle pictures have been posted but no luck.

Guess I'll get back to my cabinet caster Tetris. With the newly acquired cabinets, none of them lined up. Can't have that.

The first cabinet to get new casters was the DP cabinet. Going from 2" to 4" casters will be nice. You can also get a better look of the drawer Tetris that happened early. I'm liking this set up and having the labels makes life easier. Also, looking forward to getting the vintage Craftsman DP placed on here (motor needs rewire)

Something I ran across on one of the Vidmars was the use of nut plates. I liked the ideal so decided to make up some for my other cabinets thinking it would make caster installation easier. Easier yes, but talk about taking along time. I didn't think about it being two nuts per plate, two plates per caster, 4 casters per cabinet, and 3 cabinets. :dunno:

Pic 2-3. First step was to the scrap pipe. I found some bed frame brackets and an old table saw insert that matched the thickness of the original.

Pic 4-5, Slice and dice on the portable bandsaw/finger filer and sander, I have a bunch of plates.

Pic 6. Nut plate partially welded. :rocker: Nine hundred and fifty-nine more to go.

Here are the nut plates installed. The DP cabinet and this middle cabinet got the new casters and nut plates. Luckily the cabinet on the right came with the the same height casters. The cabinet on the left will have to wait since I like stringing projects out over months & years.

One other minor project was to straighten out one of the drawer runners. The slight downward bend made getting the drawer in and out harder. A little heat and a 24" adjustable wrench, mo' better.

The caster project was mostly pre-flu (minor) so it was nice to get back into the shop and get the other cabinets squared away.
First up was the tall Lista I brought from the house. Since the casters went to the short Listas, a new set up was needed. The Lista doesn't have a solid base like the Vidmars so I had to improvise. With the time spent on the nut plates I needed a quick solution so went with a 2x8 cut down and a 3/8 plywood shim instead of welding in steel plate. Having the outside bolts go through the frame keeps the wood in place.

This tall cabinet holds all my auto body related tools and consumables. I like the idea of using the old SS-topped bench as a mobile auto body cabinet but I'm not going to be doing a lot so mobile isn't as critical. The bench is for sale!!!

Yesterday was productive. I put some lights on my sweetie's make up table then went to shop to finish last cabinet swap.
First order of busy was to fix the bottom drawer's drawer face. I guess the PO had it loaded down and the small spot welds didn't hold.

Pic 2-Sanded the rust off from all the areas that needed to be joined. Used pipe clamps to pull the face back and had to hammer the tabs flat.

Pic 3-I welded more area than where the spot welds were. Don't want this happening again.

Pic-4-Drawer back in place, with a lot better fit.

p.s. All the cabinets will get some TLC after the SL gets painted. Yes the SL is still quietly waiting. :D

Last project of the day was to transfer everything out of two of the grey storage cabinets so I can use the grey cabinets in the house garage. Though not completely full, I was able to get everything in the grey cabinets into the tan cabinet, plus some other stuff and still have room for more. Space space, means more stuff, right!!! :rocker:

Pic 2-the Lista auto body cab and the tan cabinet are sitting where the two grey cabinets were. I'm getting organized and it is so nice to walk up to a cabinet, open a drawer and get what you need. It will also be nice to get all the stuff on the right out of the shop, remnants from my mom's move.

Since there's no good pictures to look at, I think it is time for a Shorty's Safety Short brought to you by the GJ Florida Chapter Assistant Undersecretary of Safety.

There has been debate about putting casters on the Vidmar/Lista cabinets so I decided to conduct another test. I did a test awhile back which showed the tipping point was pretty far. For this test I decided to evaluate what happens when you load up a couple hundred pounds of stuff, while leaving, all but the empty bottom drawer, pulled out. Just as the manufacture stated, the cabinet will fall over. :wtf:

Hooking the crane up to the cabinet stabilized it. The drawers are easy to remove so within 15 minutes the cabinet was upright with all drawers back in place. They're heavy but boy I like these cabs.

Note: no live animals were injured while preforming this test (except for the spider that got a shot of Raid).

Stay tune for next months Safety Short. Can you say 1/2 ton battery pack? Sure you can. ;)

Man, when you said nut plate, I thought something had happened and it was a medical device you was talking about.:lol_hitti

Looking good. I'm also drooling at the thought of all of my cabs being used.

Shorty, you have done well..:rocker:

Plus you have well and truly tested the manufactures warning..

Thanks 1/2. Glad it didn't drop on me. :lol_hitti

Cabinet Tetris make me dizzy. You are one tough dude.

Thanks for the safety topic. We could use more of them. Are those drawers so easy to slide that if you are rolling the cabinet and it hits an obstacle like an extension cord all the drawers could come out and help the cabinet get over the cord?

Shorty, I found a must have for you, it's Part No. 047488. I think there's a discount when you buy 10 or more.

If you look at the graphic above, it does resemble yours with the drawers hanging out!

"I'm getting organized and it is so nice to walk up to a cabinet, open a drawer and get what you need."

So very true! I finally have started to realize this myself and am moving in a similar fashion to you by using cabinets on wheels and getting rid of individual piles or boxes of just stuff that seems to accumulate.

Thanks for the safety tip. I have two multi drawer cabinets like this now and keep training myself to only have one drawer open at a time.

Andy you have done your whole shop, that’s tough.
Drawers can roll out when cabinets hits something. Tip #247: wrap a strap around cab when moving over cracks, expansion joints, etc.

Thanks for stopping in. Normally I don’t have more than one drawer open. This new cabinet is wide and I had some heavy stuff in there. Not a safe combination.

Well it looks like you dodged a bullet on that one, Shorty. Good thing you are quick on your feet.

I am glad to see that you are recovered and back in the shop. We need to enjoy this brief spell while we can. My grass is growing and we are now having 80 degree days. Pretty soon I will be playing the role of yard ape and missing out on that quality shop time.

That is a really nice collection of Lista / Vidmar cabinets, great for organizing & keeping clean. I'd love to have even one of those, but I just don't seem to have the knack for finding the used and abused ones. Looks like you've just about got them all set up the way you want, enjoy!

What's the next project?

Yes, dodged a bullet. Definitely nice getting some QST even if it includes sweating in February.
Don’t even mention yard work. I’ve been use to condo living the last 7 yrs but now time get back outside.

Thanks for stopping in. I originally was only going to have a tall one to replace my HF 44 and a short one for hardware. At auction I had to buy three. After getting them home and using a couple, I fell in love with this style tool cabinet. Except for one in near new condition, the ones that followed have been inexpensive restro candidates. Being close to a military surplus depot doesn’t hurt either.
Past-present-next project is primer on this852babef61b6ef3dd045e0e22fe7f118.jpg

The last one looks like a tall order. Are the top, hood, deck lid sun faded, or did you start sanding them?

Everything has been sanded except roof. I think roof paint is still factory so no issues like the cheap repair on the rest of car.

Shorty, that is one challenge..

The biggest challenge is me getting in the mindset to finish what I started. My ADD keeps me jumping to quick, fun or new projects.

Thanks so much for testing this for us Shorty. I was in the middle of planning out the procedure for my very own tip test when I took a break to peruse through the latest happenings in the Garage Journal. And there was the answer to my question!

Thanks for sharing (and keeping a humorous side to all this!)
