Don't know much about this except that it is so heavy I could barely lift it. It is sitting on top of a 12" paver and I couldn't find any markings on it. It came from my inlaws from a farm in NC. Didn't see any markings on it.

Guys, I bought this old anvil at a garage sale a couple weeks ago. I paid $150 . It appears to be real old, at least rough...Having trouble with Photobucket/new computer. I have a bunch of pics but takes forever to load....Any info would be appreciated.

BJ42LX - that would be a "Hay Budden" anvil.
In general, Hay Buddens are know to be very nice quality anvils, that one look to be in fairly good condition, but look it over closely for cracks, ring, rebound, etc.
Not sure if you missed your auction or not but;
The value of anvils varies wildly depending on how savvy a seller is, how many buyers are interested or who attends an auction on that day, etc.
Pictures can be very deceptive, but I would guess that anvil could be in the 150 to 200lbs range.
Around here that anvil would probably sell in the $2-3 dollars per pound range.

Bronson - Not an expert on anvils by any means, but I have a few.
That shape looks more similar to a Trenton anvil I have and has numbers stamped in the same place on the base. Mine has a faint diamond shape on the right side of the anvil with the name Trenton stamped inside the triangle.
I was told I could look up one of the numbers on a Trenton and determine exactly when the anvil was made.
If you don't get the answers you are looking for here, there are lots of resources on the web, anvilfire has a large anvil gallery and lots of info that is an interesting read.

so i bought a what i beleive to be arm and hammer anvil has the logo stamped in but the weight markings are hard to read it weighed 172 on the bathroom scale it has a serial number on the foot edge that reads 5265 i only payed 175 for it but i still would like to know more about it

ironmutt - I am guessing you are describing a Vulcan Anvil with Arm and Hammer logo.
They were manufactured by Illinois Iron & Bolt Co., Carpentersville, IL AKA American Skein & Foundry Company.
The Vulcan anvil is a cheaper cousin of the Fisher Eagle Anvil. They were made from about 1875 until about 1969. It is a steel faced cast iron anvil welded in the mold by a proprietary process.
Doing a google search for "Vulcan Anvil" will give you more information about your anvil and what the numbers mean.

I don't think so. Thnk we know you got pretty darn good deal at $1 / lb for your anvil. Once you post up some more pics, I'm sure you'll earn a You ****. Last week I went to guys shop with lots of CL stuff, and he thought he could get $400 for beat up / chipped anvil that was only 100 lbs. I told him he's crazy and it's only worth $100 to $200 max.

Given the new pics, I would agree you have a Arm and Hammer anvil.
I believe they were made in Columbus Ohio by the Columbus Anvil and Forging Company, they are nice anvils.
Just an observation, but the pic you posted of the serial number looks like there could be a 1 in front of the 5265, making the serial number 15265? (or is that a letter)?
Somebody with the book, Anvils of America, will be able to tell you more.

yes your right is 15263 its a heck of alot easier to read in the pics then in person i tried using a paper and a piece of coal to rub it thats how i found the number to begin with unfortunately some one has beat the **** out of the sides of it so markings are hard to read
i i have tried finding a copy of anvils in america but new its 65 plus shipping and just spent this weeks lunch budget on this big honking hunk of metal . my library says they have it in their catalog but its past due for the last three years so no luck there and the rest of their ref for black smithing doesnt cover collecting anvils so no serial number help

If its not too late, I have no doubt thats a Hay Budden if you want a second on that, looks to be in very good shape. I would have no problems dropping $200+ pending on weight. Hay Buddens are high quality proud to own anvils.
It looks like a smaller one tho, I think thats a 6' table and that box behind it looks roughly same size a #10 can case.
hope you get it if you go for it.
