I see there's a "show me your toolbox" thread, I'd like to start one for the Harbor Freight US General toolboxes. They seem to be pretty popular and well made from what I've read. I've seen a lot of pictures of the outside but not much in the way of what's inside. I'd also like to hear about how they're holding up from some of you who've had the box for a while. I need a box for home use and the 13 drawer HF unit is looking like the one to get. So let's see the pictures.

/\ - I eyeball that red General box every time I go into HF, it's a lot of storage for the money.

A buddy of mine told me they use lead paint on those boxes. Can anybody confirm that?

Really? Dont eat it and you'll be fine...:headscrat

For your Enjoyment.

LEAD GETS IN THE BODY IN MANY WAYS
One out of every eleven children in the United States has dangerous levels of lead in their bloodstream. Even children who appear healthy can have dangerous levels of lead. People can get lead in their body if they: put their hands or other objects covered with lead dust in their mouths, eat paint chips or soil that contain lead, or breathe in lead dust (especially during renovations that disturb painted surfaces).
Lead is even more dangerous to children than adults because children's growing bodies absorb more lead and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their bodies can suffer from: damage to the brain and nervous system, behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems and headaches.
Lead is also harmful to adults. Adults can suffer from difficulties during pregnancy and other reproductive problems (in both men and women). Other effects are high blood pressure, digestive problems, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problems, and muscle and joint pain. Lead can affect the body in many ways.

Thank you kind sir.

Again, don't eat it and you'll be fine. Probably isn't a good idea to snort the dust off of it either...

I hear all kinds of toxins get into the body by "drinking the Kool-Aid"; especially the brain...

Is this what we are gonna do? By all means im not saying that the HF boxes are covered in Lead paint, I Have never personally had one swabbed. You dont have to Eat or Snort the Dust to ingest it into your system or your children's. Any kind of scratch, paint ding that is "TOUCHED" by you or your Child will enter the system. (Its up there in that Quoted section if you missed it a couple posts ago) Not trying to Argue, I only wanted to shed some light on the Dangers of Lead paint. If Lead paint is Cool with you and your Family, Who am i to Argue. Enjoy..

Um, in the case of the HF-13, wouldn't that be "lead" powdercoat? ;)

I'm pretty sure that box is powdercoated.

LOL.. I have No freaking Clue.

To the OP: I have 2 of the Black 4 Drawer Roll Carts, I purchased 1 New for like $75 bucks and the other was a Used Aquisition. I use both carts for stationary storage and they have Provided me with Cheap sq inches for around a Year. I really dont have any Complaints other than now i need to swab them for Lead paint.. Lol.. My internet is the **** in the Hotel and i cant even load Photobucket for pics. Ill update when i get Home.

My brother used to bite the clamp type lead fishing weights to open them and close them with his teeth when we were younger and went fishing, but that was before they found out lead was toxic, so far he has no ill effects

First of all, I'm pretty sure the lead paint accusation was a jab at "made in China", in the wake of a recall from Chinese-made toys that contained lead paint. I have not seen a single cited source for this rumor.

Seriously? Ever handled ammunition? How about fishing weights? I've handled both quite a bit, I suppose I should have been dead years ago :shocking:

I'm not sure I have pics, but I got a US General Stainless chest / roller combo a few years ago for $580. Day after Thanksgiving sales pay off sometimes. I haven't had a single issue with it other than keeping it clean and organized.

Try to steer this back in the right direction........

DSCF3195.JPG_1000.jpg

That is my current home set up, I've had one box and side cabinet for over 3 years and used that with the top box in a shop for at least two an a half of that. Only failure was the lock on the top box. I picked up the other bottom off of Craigslist used from a guy that basically couldn't handle being a tech.

No pics of the inside but I may still have pics of the old set up in the normal tool box thread if you want to search. Only real complaint I had with my set up was the lack of room for long objects; breaker bars, torque wrench, extensions, etc. Bottom line I would love to have a wall of snap on at home but for the investment in these I can't complain.

From what I've seen there's a lot of them out there. I wana see more. I'd like to see some inside pictures and also would like to get some feedback from anyone who's had one of these boxes for a while. How are they holding up, any slide or lock issues, anything coming apart, stuff like that.

I'll get some pics soon. I've had mine for about three years now. Had it in heavy usage for two of those years. It still gets pretty good use now. My complaints: The main chest (13 drawer 40") never really sat level. One of the wheels was kind of off the ground. It has a small crinkle in the top front corner on this side. Was like that out of the box. I put the 7 drawer side box on that side and filled it. Now it sits perfectly level. I had to move this box into my shed at home. When the temp dropped well below 30 the drawers are very hard to open (sometimes I have to pull with both hands) and the slides are a little rough. Not many things function too well in the cold though. I wish the box was a little deeper. Hell I just need a bigger box now.
But for anyone looking for a good cheap box, this is it. Comparable Craftsman boxes are either $600-$1200 or built like a FN' pop can. I've been very happy with this box, and with the money I saved on it, I've been able to fill it quite nicely.

Pics coming soon.........

There already is a "show us your toolbox" thread.

Have you seen how out of control that thread has gotten. Its cover 210 pages and a whole lot of people reposting the same pictures over and over again. Don't get me wrong it has some awesome pictures in there but people quote them and repost them over and over and over again. And if you aren't keeping up with the thread and you view it for the first time its quite alot of pages to sort through.

Join in and Be Heard,
Mike
