It is factory, has it's on model number. not sure what it is.

No female square in the handle like I thought. I wonder if it was a prototype for a stubby or a hard handle, or custom order.

Awesome job on your snaptco!.

Thanks! The tx72 below was from the days when they only made the locking flex in teardrop so I turned that one down and fit the handle as well.

I love that Matco ratchet I'll be making another one for home I'm sure.

Like the snap on grip so much better than the square one that came on it.

Its not bent ,it was drilled out at an angle.it has happened to me too.

It isn't bent..... I use it every day for the most part. I'll try and take some pics against a straight edge from all sides this week. If it didn't look and feel right I'd do away with it. My OCD assures you of that lol.

My newest addition required some machining, so I had gj67stang (Garth) make this one up for me. It is a SK 45170 3/8" ratchet that I picked up at an estate sale for $5 with a 1/4" Cushion Grip screwdriver handle. It looks and feels fantastic- I highly recommend Garth's services. I can't wait to put it to use!

Here's a custom Craftsman "franken" flex. The original pivot pin was worn out, despite attempts to re-peen it. Gear was in perfect condition. So, why take it back to Sears for a Chicom replacement? why not make it better?

I used a CM 44202 long breaker handle. The longer bar uses a 3/8 OD pivot pin, so I had to enlarge the 5/16" hole in the original flex head to make it work. It passes the strength test, I tested to 400 ft lbs. :rocker:

That's a pretty impressive review. The only ratchet I'd be nervous about is the 1/4" drive. That small of a ratchet with 160 teeth is hard to believe.

Tell ya what. I bought that entire set and wish I hadn't. What your boy there fails to address is all the reasons as to why mine go completely unused. First off they weigh a ton, not the end of the world but you certainly know it's in your hand. What does kill it is the back drag is EXCESSIVE beyond belief. I have yet to have myself in a situation where the swing arch was advantageous because of this. The other major problem I have is the rotation selector rotates with the head, so there's nothing intuitive to changing direction while on the bolt. You literally need to remove it and figure out which way to rotate it. Not that it's a mentally challenging obstacle, but it's not something that happens without intentional thought. Maybe one of these days a situation will arise that the strength attributes will come in handy, I've just haven't run into that yet.

My vote is save your money.

Ya I noticed that about the direction selector. Not a fan. I would never buy them either way, but how is the 1/4" ratchet?

Still brand new. The back drag is so bad it's worthless. And yes, I lubed all of them. And the selector protrusion is so small it's very difficult to switch. My go too's are my GW units.

Is the bent breaker bar handy? I could see it being good for certain places. But then again seems a little short too.

The use is limited which is the reason why I converted. I may try to straighten it out but not sure if it is really worth my time. The Snap On Bent ratchet, before the conversion, was okay for spark plug job but it was not necessary. I do prefer the Matco's long handle which provides the torque and leverage required for certain jobs. I doubt I will use the bent breaker bar but the Matco handle and Snap On ratchet will see a lot of action.

I put a blue hard handle (THD72-12B) on to a THNF72.

Did you have to modify either to install the hard handle? I am planning to do this as well but was going to buy a THNFD72 which is currently available but only in green. I had assumed the standard soft grip ratchet you used would not take a hard handle.....

I have that Matco breaker bar. I really like it. I have a SK one that's the same length. Comes in handy too.

I bought that Matco breaker bar to do serpentine belt jobs but Mac Tools 17MM/19MM combination extra long wrench was a better fit. I did not want to spend $100 for a long handle 3/8 ratchet when I could convert these for so much less.

Yes, I had to drill out the hard handle (1/4-inch bit) and shorten the metal ratchet handle by about 1/2-inch. I stuck the ratchet in the freezer for an hour and then banged the hard-handle on with a dead-blow hammer.

I did it a few weeks ago to my 80 tooth snap on that I bought on ebay with a narfed up soft grip.

I'm super happy with the result. I used some walnut a co-worker gave me and superglue for the finish (used it before on knives- very durable). Been using it on a dirtbike teardown/rebuild and it's a real pleasure to use a tool that is both functionally and aesthetically beautiful.

Tapping the brass

IMG_20150327_091209139_HDR_zpshzjp03ur.jpg

Turing down the brass and wood- I should have made more taper but I ddin't want the wood to get too thin. The black spacers are rubber cut from an inner tube. Idea is to allow for expansion/contraction.

IMG_20150327_142825833_HDR_zpsntvjpjr1.jpg

Finished product

I finished it with 600 grit paper and it is really smooth- almost looks/feels like fake wood.

StanleyOutdoors, that is just beautiful. Nicely done. I am assuming that the use of the rubber washers also keeps the handle from turning on the shaft when used?

My idea was to allow for expansion and contraction, but it hasn't turned at all. It's held up very well but I'm a hobbyist not a professional

After looking through this thread, I had to try it out. Just used a cheap 99 cent screwdriver from Lowes on one of my 1/4 Gearwrench ratchets. I really like it!
