How are you doing these? Boiling the handle in water until it's soft?

These custom ratchet's with the acetate handles are way too cool!

Is there anyone here that will make one for me or sell's them?

Thanks to everyone's posts here I got a lot of ideas! :willy_nil

I started with 1/2" and 3/8" drive Snap On soft handles, swapped for some hard handles...
snap_on_1.jpg

snap_on_2.jpg

I took the 1/2" soft handle and made a 3/8" driver extension.

Then I thought, why not do some custom SK hard handles. These might be my favorite.

1/2"Dr flex head, 3/8"Dr flex head, 3/8"Dr in 1/4" body flex head and a straight 3/8"Dr.

Stay tuned... when I can locate the right size bits I'm doing a SK 3/8 driver extension next.

Bob, the snap on soft handle extension is awesome. I'm about to swap a soft handle for a hard handle and think i'll end up doing the same.

You can buy a brand new Snap-on 3/8 drive hard handled 100 tooth roto ratchet. They only come in green but you can buy different color handles. I just did this same thing only with the 1/4 drive.

...Since the head of the ratchet wouldn't fit in the bore of my biggest lathe chuck, I had to devise another method of workholding. Being lazy, I didn't want to center the thing up in the 4-jaw. I grabbed a big 1/2" drive socket and chucked it with the drive end facing out.
eIj4iuX.jpg

I used the steady rest with a set of Delrin jaws to support the ratchet, and backed it up with a live center.

Just love the innovative way you got around that problem! Kudos!:rocker:

Re: Show off your "Custom Handled Ratchet"

Just finished this SK 45179 with Proto handle, don't know how I missed the fact that this ratchet is only like 10.5 inches long when I ordered it, but I fixed that real quick and I absolutely love this thing!!!

I couldn't find a good place to post a picture of these Craftsman driver handles that I found this weekend. Perhaps they'll help to revive this inspirational thread.

Show off your "Custom Handled Ratchet"

Had to try this. Add it to the list of “things I did because of Garage Journal”

1/4” pit pro with a Husky handle.
Definitely is an improved feel to me.
And it transformed an $8 ratchet into....

well, a $9 ratchet

Saw this an it was like a lightbulb went on. I like the Husky rotos a lot. Super cheap and feel good. But those awful stock handles....

Ten minutes later.

Next up is the 1/4”. Thought I’d do a green Robertson handle, you know, keep the colour to size relationship consistent :)

A while ago I had two cheap ratchets where the handle fell off (the glue was also cheap). Then I dug out some old file handles and drilled out and pushed them on.

A while later I bought a Bahco ratchet without a handle on a flea market. The idea was to put a screwdriver handle on it sometime (inspired by this thread). I never got round to it though...

But then I tried some wood turning, and though that I could make some handles that way. It was so fun I ended up tearing the handles of two more cheap ratchets just to make them new handles.

So from the top:
Bahco with a lilac handle
Used file handle
Oak handle with clear coat
Used file handle
Rowan handle

Tjo, those look cool. I especially like the Biltema.

Here’s one i did recently.
Its more about functionality than looks.
A bit ratchet mated with an old school Matco driver handle with bit storage.
Makes sense, right?!
I really like the ratchet but the handle was almost too small.
This is better for me:

Did you have to turn down the handle for this?

These are all pretty cool. I dont have the interest to make one myself but I do like all these ideas. I wonder what handle I would choose. Maybe a vessel ball type.

This resurrected thread made me realize my customized handle is worn out already. About 30 years I reckon9C320808-AF68-4FF8-903C-36FD10308D61.jpeg

Curiosity got the best of me. Removed the grip from my 1/2” Bahco Dual 80 and put on a Snap on instinct. Shank on the ratchet is rectangular and tapered. I was going to mill it square but just said he’ll with it and used a grinder. Drilled the grip to 13/32” on the lathe and hammered it home.
