I have a DOE that I inherited from my dad that I'm pretty sure he inherited from Grandpa. It's huge, I'm sure it was to work on a dump truck or a piece of farm equipment. Extremely rusty from laying around a farm shop for years so no visible markings but it's about 14" long 1/2" thick and is for1 1/2 and 1 1/4" fasteners.

A very intriguing DOE engineers wrench showed up on the General Discussion Board recently. All the features of a bulky 1930's wrench, with no brand, an Industry Standard Number (ISN) on the shank ("No. 723"), fractional inch size markings on the faces of the jaw on the same side, and millimeter size markings on the faces of the jaws on the flip side. The m/m markings made me think Bridgeport, but the earliest Bridgeport DOE engrs wrenches I knew of with SAE and m/m markings were the double-paneled wrenches from the 1950's. It just seems so anachronistic seeing the m/m size markings on a 1930's era wrench. But I went through my 723's and I was surprised to see I had the exact same wrench! Bridgeport kept nagging at me and I think I traced it to their 1940 catalog.

Link to thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=362508

that's interesting, i have a few heavy old wrenches that are marked like that, but with whitworth and mm sizes, and no manufacturers name, one of them i regularly use as its 28mm, (5/8w) a size that is used on one particular hydraulic hose on the machinery i work on.

Going by the style of the font on them and general look of the wrenches i estimated them to be twenties or thirty's, possibly of European origin which would explain the mm markings, as i have some 1920 Hazet wrenches that use a very similar font

Will get some pictures of them when I'm at work next week, along with my other double open end wrenches.

An unusual Williams DOE having both the "Williams" name AND the "TRW" name. Historically significant because this lone wrench proves that TRW had removed the markings "JH", "& CO", plus the "SUPER-" moniker from their wrenches, as well as having changed the lettering fonts from the earlier block lettering before divesting itself of Williams tools in the mid-1980s, and years before Snap-On bought up the rights to the name and trademarks in 1993.

DOEs are pretty common in Europe. I have a bunch of them from German brands.

Hazet and Stahlwille
My collection of Mercedes Benz and BMW wrenches from Dowidat, Heyco, Matador, and Walter
Gedore and other made in Germany ranging up to 30mm. Sorry for the poor quality pics.

all sorts here, inc Bluepoint, Barcello, Bonney, Par-X billings, Williams, Duro and Vcheck

Nice metric Proto 24/26mm wrench, just bought a few more of these, love the style and look of them

View media item 74438

some euro wrenches, from various countries, mostly Uk and Germany, inc Gordon, Tipco, Hazet, Acesa and Bacho (made in sweden)

View media item 74436

Oh and i although don't have a full set of 'normal' Doe's, but i have this complete set of Duro-Chrome E-series ignition wrenches (plus a couple of extras)

View media item 74437

lastly an interesting dual marked Vlchek, with metric and whitworth sizes, 11/16th - 19/32nd
and 5/16w-3/8w on the other side

(maybe this partially explains some of the oddball sizes that used to show up in SAE sets of wrenches and sockets?)

i do have some others that aren't in these pictures, including one metric 12/13mm Snap on from 1966 like those pictured earlier, that is possibly my favorite wrench, hope to collect a full set eventually...

Neat! Thanks for sharing. I love it when stuff like that happens. My great grandfather bought a coat made in Gloversville, NY in the teens. It was full length made from a brown bear pelt.

After a lot of searching I actually came across it in a catalog from 1911. I almost fell out of my chair!

Here are two metric DOE wrenches that I've had for a very long time. I now believe that they were made by Lectrolite.

Here's more. Top to bottom:

#1 My first metric find. I think it's C.A.B.G. made in Japan

#2 Select Steel

#3 & #4 Indestro

#5 Looks like a Billings

#6 No markings other than a giant G or Gr at the end. Posted a close up. Very faint.

#7 ChromeMolybonedum is the only mark.

#8 Penncraft which may also be the earlier mystery one with just Raft on it. Though the script looks different.

#9 Original-Stecoge Made in Germany.229a7bed5131d0bf57bd2adafa8eadd8.jpgf0d65f7a88309f3d8104312f2b3365b9.jpgcf56c0d3373427cfb85ee1fe2d88e1b7.jpg446ec3931f927417ff13da21db973b75.jpg
