My source was probably Wikipedia.... we know how reliable they are!

But seriously.... I cannot recall where I read whatever it was I read about them - probably one of any number of those sites that post histories of local businesses.

As an aside, the 1959 Shapleigh catalog is online but it has to downloaded in three separate volumes in *.pdf format: 631MB, 410MB, and 81MB. Everything you could possibly imagine - bigger than the Sears catalog!

Those boards are fabulous!

RagTopTA and Private Lugnutz:

Front cover from 1910 Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Co. catalog.

(* Lugnutz: the reason you didn't get any "Norvell" catalog pages is because all of those I have are for wood planes other than these three - the front cover of their 1910 catalog, a page showing "Crescent Tool Co." hammers (who knew?) and another showing the Richards "Wizard" wrench and the "Baxter's Adjustable". Note the "S-shaped" adjustable at center is stamped "Shapleigh". Still have not figured out who made the "Little Giant" brace sockets or the carriage wrenches at bottom. I'll forward these to you.
I read some stuff about Shapleigh way back but my memory is fuzzy, but I believe you've got the date range correct: RagTop has a seriously old wrench there. *)

Those boards are awesome! Nice job!

I agree. woodland_hank’s boards are works of art. My Barcalo board (gifted to me by the new King of the Proto tool boards, Tin Medic), is aesthetically less pleasing but I like it anyway. Here it is along with a DOE roll.

d42jeep that board looks like a manufacturers board. Possibly cut down at one point? I struggle with asymmetry so I can't get beyond 90 degree corners...

It took me a little bit to figure out what a DOE was.... think I got it figured. Here is an older (no clue how old) Williams. About 19 inches long. Pretty hefty.

18 piece Blue Point DOE metric set. Date range about 40-61. Sizes 6mm-32mm. Model numbers S67M - S3032M.
I think this is a complete set, a hodgepodge of years and condition. took several years to finish.

7 piece Blue Point RS ratcheting DOE set. from the late 40s. The late 40s were the only time these came in a set of 7, most years came in a set of 4

Well done, snapmom. Love the streamline shank on the Supremes. Hard enough to collect a complete set of vintage engineers wrenches in imperial sizes, let alone metric, and then ratcheters to boot!

This is the first time I have seen one of these, a "PACE WRENCH," picked up at my flea market this morning. Pressed steel, obviously. From a distance, and in its original rusty state (see Pic 5), it looked like an early Indestro "Auto Kit" type wrench without the tap hole for the screw to keep the wrenches together. Simple stamped markings. Looking very Ford-ish, applications-wise, to me. The diameter of the opening marked "FRONT RADIUS ROD" is 15/16" and the diameter of the opening marked "SPARK PLUG AND OUTSIDE GEAR BOX" is 1".

oooo... that is different..... the Indestro had a relatively straight-sided shank except for in the center, where it was rounded to accommodate the hole:

Indestro 112 119 Nut and Rethreader Wrench set - 1935 Indestro catalog pp 26.jpg

(their "Nut and Tap Wrench" has the same shape, but you can't see it in the catalog illustration.)

Wakefield was more like Mossberg - straight-side shanks:

J.E. Wakefield 5-pc SAE open-end wrench set 01.jpg

That one kind of evokes Ronson, although I've not seen anything made by Ronson that was that large:

Ronson Specialty Co. No. R 4-pc SAE wrench set (Ebay 233044533968 01).jpg

I see what you mean about the bump out on the Auto Kit and Nut and Tap wrenches.

This one reminds me of something - I just can't place it! EDIT: :shocking: It just hit me! The shape is exactly like Terry's Magneto Spanners, which are British, and much, much smaller!

same here... I know I've seen that shape, but I just can't place it.

(I didn't notice when I posted the Ronson photo that it had the longitudinal slot cut into it.)

I've never intentionally bought a DOE but they always seem to migrate their way into package deals. The only two I have of note are a couple of Moore Drop Forge era Whitworths.

Jaguar. Thin, almost like a tappet wrench. “Across Flats” fractional. Can’t read all of the other side. “Garrington” according to Lugz’ earlier post.
The other guy is copper-plated steel, which I had thought might be alloy. I’m thinking nonsparking for small gas lines.

I got a couple of yesterday’s estate sale finds out of the evaporust. The first one is an unmarked 723. The next two are offset mirror images of one another with the same markings. Somebody must know who made them.

I don't know what Leg means by "S" wrench when it's an engineers' wrench, but I agree that it looks like a Vlchek contract wrench based on the shape, the crisp "723" stamped font, and the forged-in "17" forge number.

I think the other wrenches are BHM Hy-Bars.

my first thought on the 723 was "Vlchek", and I don't even KNOW Vlchek.

I'm going to concur with Private Lugnutz on the others - they do look quite similar to Bridgeport:

Bridgeport Hy-Power 53 6-pc SAE metric open end wrench set 03.jpg

(* I only have "Hy-Power" - no "Hy-Bar" here.)

I meant the details, such as forged in text on both sides, standard industry numbers, and lack of maker ID, also used by Vlchek on their 'S' wrenches.

I don't seem to be able to attach a photo in this 'quote' reply, but AA has pictures of both styles.

Can anyone tell me the MFG on this wrench, just picked up today. Seems to me I had a set of these many years ago as a kid....left them at home with my parents, never saw them again..

Indestro “Select Steel” DOE wrench. Similar to these I just posted on the Duro/Indestro thread.

"Select Steel" and the copyrighted "Streamline" design of the panels on the shanks = Indestro.

That's a really nice specimen there Don. Those rack-type holders with intact sets aren't all that common.

Indestro Select Engineers Open-end SAE wrench - 1959 Indestro catalog pp 30.jpg Indestro 0930-5W 0930-6W 930-5W 930-6W Indestro wall bracket wrench sets - 1959 Indestro catalog.jpg

* 0720 = same as P720 (on size)
* "P" prefix on part number = plated/polished head

Here is an incomplete roll with mostly Armstrong DOE wrenches. The wrenches are only marked Armstrong on one side and the size markings on the other. No model or part numbers. I assume they are contract wrenches made for the maker marked on the roll.

Technically not vintage, but they have a vintage look. I like these Gedore DIN 895's for my German vehicles that are missing their original tool kits.

Those are nice Gedore wrenches kyrbz, and they are a very strong good quality wrench. Lots of them around here, they came in tool kits with farm machinery too so I have a mixture of 'oddball' combinations of sizes on the same wrench similar to the T Williams Superslims.
They are still available new from Gedore dealers i bought a 10mm/13mm DOE recently to replace a combine harvester kit one lost in a field.
If you have a list of what was originally in the tool kits for your vehicles it shouldn't be too difficult to make up a period correct replacement kit. (famous last words!)

Not really mine. Just spotted this “made in Germany” DOE today at an architectural salvage barn today. 65x70mm.

A coupe of new ones today:

A mini SO Ignition wrench in 1/4 and 9/32:

An the real oddball: A French made Peugeot "Flank Drive" in 8 & 10MM. These apparently came with a Peugeot 203 in the 50's; "surpans" apparently means "on the flank".

I tried it on a 10MM was was so impressed, I went looking on Eprey to see what they might go for and what sizes were available. On sketchy evidence they made larger DOEs in 12X14, 17X19, and 28X30.

I found a 12/14 that wasn't stupid $$ and bought it. The 10, 12, and 14 are the most common sizes on my rigs, so these two should do quite a lot for me. The will also be great for parts runs to the yards, where I like to go as light in tools as I can,
