these are out of my field maintenance box the red snap on drivers will probably end up in my home box. The koken drivers are the remains of six piece set (these two are unused) they are quite strong in the shanks but the handles rotted away from oil and diesel hense why i got the caterpillar hard handles and the red ones are getting a early retirement.

If you have enough green, you can have "burgerkong" on those screwdrivers as well. :D

IIRC, I think John Deere had some screwdrivers as well.

@Bulldozer Lackey,

With the exception of the Ko-ken handles dillapidating, any positive comments on the level of grip they offer? I have a few and find that they offer excellent grip.

I've never come across any CAT tools, where exactly are you guys getting them?

Or are they only offered by CAT to CAT technicians?

yes the cat screwdrivers and most other cat tools are made buy snap on and williams.

the koken stuff has good grip if dry but the rubber goes to goo in oil and they have striking caps on them for hitting on stubbern screws

cat tools are sold through their dealers anybody can walk in and purchase them its best if you have the part numbers for them (eg 8h-8578 is 3/8" drift punch) but you have to go through a parts interpreter any way to make the order so its not a big deal

Hello, Dennis,
I'm new here and have a couple of questions about the large, all-black-handled screwdrivers in your post:

Are they entirely hard-handled, or are they made up of a composite of hard plastic and softer rubber material like the yellow and black handled drivers?

If they are hard-handled drivers, do they come in other sizes than just the very large ones pictured?

Where did you find them? After seeing your post, I searched but could not find them anywhere I looked.

Congrats on getting the nice new tools. I thank you for posting the pic.

Thanks,

--Bill

Hello, Dennis,
I'm new here and have a couple of questions about the large, all-black-handled screwdrivers in your post:

No problem. Welcome to the board!

Are they entirely hard-handled, or are they made up of a composite of hard plastic and softer rubber material like the yellow and black handled drivers?

The all black chiseldrivres pictured (PH4 and S12mm) are all hard-handle drivers. Only the yellow parts on the other drivers are the soft grip material.

If they are hard-handled drivers, do they come in other sizes than just the very large ones pictured?

I have all sizes in Phillips (1-4) pictured. The black Slotted driver pictured is the 12mm and Wera makes a 14mm. I don't need that one so I didn't buy it. One large 12mm is big enough and this one is BIG enough!

If Wera make an all hard-handle line of drivers, I don't know. But, *click* on the 'Wera' link in my signature.

Where did you find them?

I didn't find them; I purchased them. :lol_hitti

Seriously, I bought them at Amazon. The idiots didn't pack them correctly and they all got scrached and dinged up. They'll end up that way anyway, but still I wanted to do it!

After seeing your post, I searched but could not find them anywhere I looked.
If you can't find them, the only place that I know that has them on a regular basis is Chad's but they're a lousy seller. Be careful.

Congrats on getting the nice new tools. I thank you for posting the pic.

Thanks,

Did you order ESD micro drivers just for the color to match? :lol_hitti
I love Wera drivers

Yes, and because I work on computers and video game consoles and the ESD precision drivers I use most are 00 and 1.2mm so I got one of each to have outside my tool box.

I have Wiha sets in Phillips and Slotted in my tool box. It's handy having these two outside my box since I use these two sizes the most.

Plus, I wanted to compare the Wiha ESD precision drivers to the Wera. I like both a lot and can't decide which one I like the best. Both are awesome!

senslow,

I figure with everybody out collecting the Snap-on hard handles, you and I should have it easy finding these old school Protos. I've got about 8 of them now with no duplicates. I even found a matching P&C in this same style.

Do you have any feel for the date range when these driver were sold? I can tell you that Plomb did not have this style driver. And the Proto brand was just getting started about 1950. But, I have no Proto catalogs to use as a reference source. They look 1960's to early 1970's to me, but that is just a guess on my part. What are your thoughts? Got catalogs? Got any other reference materials?

I'm pretty excited about this one. Just found a box of these sitting behind something on a shelf. They're made by Reed and Prince but are a regular #3 Phillips. Anyone know when these are from?

I didn't know anything about the cancellation of hard-handle by SO until I tried to order some replacements last week. Come to discover these ridiculous asking prices for the plain jane plastic orange handle drivers I've used for years. So, I figure, no problem, I'll just get replacements from SK. Basically the same tool, but with a dark green handle. Turns out it's the same problem, they only list offbeat sizes on the SK website and retailers are 'out' of the mainstream sizes. Is this a case of 'New Coke' where the customers are revolting or are we a tiny majority that misses the old ones?

there is a hardware store near my work with brand new ones on a giant Vintage Proto tool board that is still in use. I should see how much they are.
