New to me.. Craftsman 1942ish Mohawk 103.0305 Drill Press.. works well-second owner!

Rare to see that model with no missing parts. I am curious about the dates of those models. The "Mohawk" was made by King-Seeley, and during that era CM also sold drill presses made by Atlas. Was there an overlap around 1941-1942 where Sears sold both the Atlas and K-S models? Mine is a 103.03622 from 1941.

Hello Doug
Yes there is a #2 taper for the church but also has 3/4 19 thread above taper, the quill does not have a knock out slot and has .0005 run out at arbor.
Mike
And for milling I'm end milling at a 1/8 pass.

Not sure if this qualifies as "old" but I still want to share. Finally got it running after it had some worn out bearings and bend spindle. 1980's Rockwell 15-350

Oh yeah! That qualifies. Not as old as some, but it's 30+ years old already. And it's definitely cool.

My fathers old 1908 Chas Allen drill press that I inherited. It was converted to a electric motor at one time.

1950's Atlas 1020 bench top in line for a few repairs and a new paint job.

If anyone has a suggestion on how to patch the missing piece of the belt guard, I'm all ears.

I'd watch Ebay for another guard. Lots of drill press parts listed there.

Yeah cr, But maybe it's working for him?
Guess the worst it could do is ruin the bearing(s) right? :dunno:
There was a Thread at OWWM (IIRC) about different bearings for a delta drill press, that were sufficient for light milling.

It's not necessarily the bearings, but the morse taper holding the chuck. A morse taper is designed for little or no side loading, only loading along it's axis, so that it can remain locked to the quill. Friction is all that holds in place. Really want a chuck with a multi-flute cutter coming loose and wandering or flying about at many hundreds of rpms?

Attached are some pics of my vintage post drills pre-restoration. Also attached are 2 pics of a Green River AA that I finished restoring a couple months ago. When I got it late last fall in southern Iowa (along with 19 others), nothing moves. Patience and a gallon of WD-40 got it back to perfect working condition. I currently have well over 100 so if you are looking for parts, I may be able to help.

So this Dunlap Sears 103.23621 arrived at my house today, pretty happy about it. Any way to tell if the motor is original? Most likely not?

I found this ID plate on the bottom of the motor, so that gave me a little more information, but still not sure if these were put there originally.

I don't think its an issue, but get on Frank Lee's Craftsman DP thread. (that is probably equivalent to the Craftsman 80 DP)

Yeah, no clue, but I'm still happy about this dp . is the pulley supposed to do this?

See if there are screws on the side of the head, that go in and tighten down on the bearings, (I think they contact the bearings) may be loose.

WOW!
Good to know that!

If I ever run across a post drill that may need some parts at a garage sale I'll probably pick it up. A post drill would make a nice addition to my basement shop that I work in during the winter, I mainly use hand tools in the basement shop.

Oh, OK thanks well that changes things I have a Power King Conehead drill press that uses the sleeve bearings but I never did anything with them. They were supposedly replaced by a machine shop when the previous owner had it I'll have to get a picture of it later it's pretty cool it's kind of a had to have sort of thing but then when I got there it was smaller than I thought but I brought it anyways but really I'm kind of running out of room I may sell it. Right now I have four drill presses

This is my old Walker Turner 900 series. It's a little dusty but love this old tank.

That's a sleeve-bearing motor & usually used in a horizontal mounting!
There's a cavity packed with felt/wicking material that needs to be soaked in oil.

With the motor mounted vertically, The wicking action is greatly reduced & the oil also leaks out of the cavities designed to hold the reserve oil.

got this recently, looks in decent shape, seems to run well, though I didn't want to run it much with bad wiring. I need to figure out a more elegant power switch location. I have the bookmarks already for these drill presses, so will be looking thru the threads here. I am hoping the motor (1/4 hp) is clean inside, just the power wiring needs to be replaced. I plan to disassemble and paint the press itself.

Great drill press!

Listen to what 454ragtop said: Drill presses are Not milling machines. It has been tried by a number of folks before. There are all sorts of things to consider, and that will go wrong.
Even if you get a MT2 end mill holder, you have no way to hold it in the taper. Side pressure from milling will work it loose and it Will fall out.
That drill press spindle won't run true enough for milling anyway.
I'd really like to find a deal on a smallish Mill, vertical bench-top.
Smaller Bridgeport one.
