Matt,
You have done a really nice job with that drill press. Would you mind sharing a little bit about tour VFD over in this tread?

Thanks, I just shared it over there.Matt,

Show us your VFD conversions/installations
If you have the name/picture of the VFD, then some guidance could be provided as to programming. HY VFD's PD003 Main Frequency 60.00 PD004 Base Frequency 60.00 PD005 Max Operating Frequency 60.00 PD075 Higher Analog Frequency 60.00 The issue is a VFD is not a 3 phase power source to run...www.garagejournal.com
Thanks for replying. Now to figure out proper level. BillEverything i`ve read says oil.
I'd say probably is there a fill plug on the side probably like up to the bottom of the fill plug I think you would be safe.Probablys for replying. Now to figure out proper level. Bill
Looking here http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=3049&tab=0 it seems that you may have a rare machine there. I would agree that oil is the gearbox lube as well as all the other places. You should consider sending a set of pictures along to the above site for their database.Pickup this old drill press. Works great! 5 speed gear driven on spindle and 4 speed on feed. My question is should there be oil or grease in gear box? A little noisy there. Also looking for Manuel. Thanks Bill

I know this was an old post, but...Be aware there's a bearing in that front pulley that's proprietary (to my knowledge) to Walker Turners. I don't think you can find a replacement for it. I was lucky and had one decent bearing between my two donor machines so I just cleaned and repacked it.
If you plan on drilling steel, I'd recommend finding an intermediate pulley setup to get the speed down slower.Forgot about this thread. I was searching for some info on Atlas 1060 because I just picked one up! All I have to do is find a motor... the one I have just oscillates back and forth currently. It's pretty smooth otherwise. Chuck opens smooth and everything appears to function as it should. Going to do a basic cleanup and paint. (assuming I can find a can of hammered blue or green paint!)
Nah, probably 95% of what I'm using this for is wood or plastics. If I need to drill metal I can run to my fathers. His is set up for metal. If you plan on drilling steel, I'd recommend finding an intermediate pulley setup to get the speed down slower.
Actually you also can't run any big hole saws or Forstner bits at the high speeds either.Nah, probably 95% of what I'm using this for is wood or plastics. If I need to drill metal I can run to my fathers. His is set up for metal.
Those are good drill presses. Probably worth the effort to get it going again, and parts are available. This is what I picked up this weekend. Don't know if it's worth my time. Motor runs, spindle froze up. And ORANGE!

The Quill is locked up tighter than the hubs of hell. I'm now giving it the blaster treatment and waiting. I don't have the foggiest idea about what you're calling the extension thingy. I'm in the learning process with this little beast. But, I'm enjoying it.Spindle or quill seized?
What's that chuck/spindle extension about? Interesting.
Is that lever on the left side a quill lock, it looks like one? I'd loosen that all the way, then see if you can get a wedge in the split of the head casting and try to spread it just a little so penetrating oil can get in there. Also, clean the rust off the exposed part of the quill before trying to get it to move up. It's also possible the gear spline on the handle is jammed where it fits in the teeth on the back of the quill. You should be able to pull the handle & shaft out to make sure that isn't the problem. The Quill is locked up tighter than the hubs of hell. I'm now giving it the blaster treatment and waiting. What's your solution for the seized up quill?
