Picked this up yesterday. My choices for carrying estate sale loot out of the basement was this one with a working set of latches but no tray, or a similarly sized hip-lidded one with a tray but absolutely no working latches. I chose this one. Fortunately, I picked up a matching tool box tray at my last sale, so serendipity...

I found a nice early-mid 60's Craftsman Carpenter's box this morning.
The middle hasp is locked, but the clasp is in the open position so it doesn't matter. The knockout for the square is still intact, and has the remnants of the sticker on it. The tray still has a sticker in it labeling one of the bins for a level. There's some rust, and a few dings, but overall it's in great shape for it's age.

Is this a crown top. I can't tell. Too bad the lid is missing.

I have more questions than answers.
I didn't know how many treasures I had until coming here.

BAGGED I have a twin to your compressor. Can you or anyone else tell me what the small line from the head does??? The PO cut and crimped the ends on mine. It's a back up to a back up so it hasn't seen any use in years and be nice to get it up and running correctly.

Love seeing these old tools.

Anybody else remember when you either tapped on the wall to find studs or hoped one of these would find a nail to at least tell you there might be a stud there?

Not a Crowntop tool, but I picked up a 1958 Craftsman electric motor in this box at a yard sale today. Packaging is cool too!

I didn't know Craftsman electric motors were made by the Packard Electric Company! That's the same name of motor that's on my Dunlap scroll saw. Too cool.

I'd save that box, cut it up and stick the big side in a frame and hang it on the wall!

I was cleaning up the shop last night and decided to consolidate and photograph a few things. Here's a few more of my Craftsman crown top items:

Pix 1 & 2 - Hack saw. Not sure if this actually qualifies or not. It looks like the proper Crown top logo, but this saw came in my Craftsman master tool kit I purchased new back in the late 80s. Odd

Pix 3 & 4 - Really beat-up Craftsman 1/2 drive torque wrench. I got this for $1 at ReStore this past summer.
Pic 5 - NOS Craftsman 6" grinding wheel.

I picked up this toolbox at an estate sale this morning. It's a #65141 Commercial crowntop ! :bounce:
It was in a flood, so the bottom is in rough shape and the paint is peeling. The side handles are missing, but I'm pretty sure I know the style that was used so I'll be keeping an eye out if the bottom can be rescued. But it still has it's tray. It weighs in at 18lbs empty.

I added two more Crowntops today. :D
The first is a 27" machinists box w/key (the original color is wrinkle brown, the red is spray bomb on the front, top, and drawer faces)

The second is a set of -V- ignition combo wrenches

(the iTablet will only let me post 1 pic at a time)

Very recently bought this tool chest. I'm in Canada and I understand that these may have been made by Beach for Craftsman. Also that these were not available in the US.

Does the crown top still indicate (with the Canadian product) that it was made somewhere around 1965 to 1978?

It is missing an aluminium handle on one drawer and also the top tool tray. I had posted this in another thread hoping to get some more information.

The red "intermediate" box in one I was given some time ago - I have no idea of the make.

Thanks,
John.

I have only recently begun reading about Craftsman tool history, but if I recall correctly, "crown top" tools date from 1962-1974. Can someone here verify or correct my comments?

Here are a few of mine - first is a knife that was in a cigar box of small tools from an estate sale.

Next are two sets of hollow screw wrenches - I bought the yellow set new in 1964 when working on F-102 Avionics Systems in the USAF. I needed long shanks and these were the only ones I could find - USAF supply didn't have any in inventory.

A drill box from an estate sale.

A tap & drill set from the box above.

Since joining GJ it's hard to pass up crown top stuff... This is my latest and by far biggest addition. :lol_hitti
I also have that same protractor in the post above. Kinda bummed, when I bought the lathe it was supposed to come with a crown top caliper and mic but I forgot them when I was loading accessories and it's too far to drive back for them.

1958 is the first year I believe. Most Crown labeled items were changed by the late 70's but a few were still around in the early 1980's.

^ ^ ^ +1 . . . I wouldn't miss out on Crowntop stuff I'd already paid for !! ;)

Have them ship in padded envelope at USPS. Can't be that much money.

Believe me guys, I thought about it a LOT. The guy I bought from was... Well... Quite possibly a meth-head. He was nice but it was clear that this was a business transaction and we weren't friends. I don't believe he'd answer if I called and if I did get him on the phone I just don't see him doing anything for me. He has some vises for sale and I was hoping to get someone interested in the vises and then maybe get that person to snag the stuff for me... I just can't find anyone I know well enough near Mobile, AL... I haven't given up completely yet though... ;)

That's pretty awesome, what are the dimensions and is it single or double sided?
