just a story about a find. about 3 weeks ago we had to go on a person welfare check to a house. turns out the guy had left about 2 months prior, but he was a hoarder.

there was at least 30 cats and the garbage was chest high, but in all that in a back room looking brand new was I believe a craftsman block grinder, everything else, including the house is garbage or condemnable. sadly I am unable to contact the owner about buying it.

Here's a couple of Crown Top goods from the weekend.
The carry box is straight and probably needs a repaint, The power bronze drill box is in great shape, but the drill doesn't work. I'll have to get into that sometime to figure it out.

Got this at an estate sale last Friday found in an old workshop. It was advertised that the out building would be American picker search, so brought my flashlight and stumbled across this old two piece with crown logo. Tried to determine year, this website has lots of good information, understand 1958 was start of crown logo but found catalog from 1957 that has the box listed?

Its possible. I have a couple Crown top power tools dated 12/57. The switchover was right around then.

.........I've never seen that set in its original pouch.

Hey Rick,

Like I said earlier, I've never seen a =V= metric set in the original pouch, but seeing it now makes some sense. About a month ago, I bought an entire Craftsman whitworth set of wrenches (4 DBE and 4 DOE) from an older guy who was big into British motorcycles. He said he bought the wrenches in 1964. When I went to pick up the wrenches, I asked him if he still had the original "green" pouches. He said no, and insisted that the pouches were "black." I showed him a picture of the green pouches, but again, he insisted that the pouches were black. After seeing your set, I'm now thinking that he must have bought the metric sets too. Once again, "NICE FIND!!" Thanks for posting the photos. Now I know what I'm looking for.

The 1957 catalog toolboxes has the oval Heritage badge centered above the drawer pull, the larger Crown logo required it to move to the right hand side of the drawer.

Look INSIDE the drawer behind the badge and there should be a date, 58 or 59 or maybe 60. That is the year of the toolbox. I have one of those top boxes with crown logo and a 58 date.

As an addendum to this, your boxes were made by the same manufacturer, it was the Craftsman logo that changed.

Here's a pic of the stamped date of manufacture of one of my Heritage era boxes.

I took a look as suggested and they are 1958 couldn't find a catalog for that year maybe craftsman didn't put a new one out. Afraid to say what I paid for the pair. I like the patina on them so far just spent 1-2 hours removing contents and cleaning off the saw dust/spider webs/spiders off. Inside paint is original color instead of the red I assume?

Same year as mine! I personally like the Heritage logo better, but wouldn't balk at your box either. You seemed concerned about what you paid. I think these boxes are worth much more than their modern equivalent that would set you back $300-$400 for an inferior set. With thain mind, you almost certainly did not over-pay

Rileysan definately didn't over pay (thought I'd get some you ****) only $5.00  am I correct to think original color grey? Doubt I'll restore it probably just hit the surface rust with steel wool and WD-40. It did have one wheel lock rusted in locked position but after a few soaks it's broken free.

Jack stands were inside(no pins not complaining)
Other miscellaneous tools as well

This Crowntop scroll saw and pedestal stand followed me home today. I already have a slightly older model of the saw but wanted this pedestal.

Is there a color that matches that tint of Craftsman Gray? The Rustoleum Charcoal Gray is darker and kind of matches some newer stuff, but that gray is lighter. I have a box that someone repainted the outside basically silver, the inside is original and looks great, would be nice to get the outside to match.

Most use Rustolium Hammered Grey, but I'm not sure how close it will match the aged paint you have.

I *might* actually have a little left in a can I will have to try. He painted the outside silver and it just looks horrible... But like I said the inside is original and in really good shape. I'll have to take a pic of it later.

I found this at the local Goodwill. Craftsman branded hair clippers. I never knew they sold such a thing. I didn't buy it, just took a picture.

My new to me Craftsman belt / disc sander. Picture is from CL ad. Cleaned up very nicely by blowing off the sawdust with an air gun. Paint is in great shape. Bought it from the estate of the original owner.

Rick, that's awesome! Someone found and posted one in one of the past years garage sale threads. May have been last year but could have been prior to that.

This ^^^ is a round top CM Block style grinder.

Sears made them in 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 3/4-HP versions. AFAIK, no 1-HP has been posted in the round top style.

My guess is the best would have been the 3/4-HP. In fact, there are flat top 1-HP Blocks with Sears Best labels.
