What year is your SO set? It doesn't appear to be from the same generation so not really a fair comparison.

Brian

It’s wartime but I have a much earlier Ferret extension and it basically looks the same as the ‘40s one. I’ll see if I can find a picture. None of the design details of my CF series extension look Snap-on to me but who knows?

I made a trade with Mr X yesterday for a Craftsman X30 deep offset shorty DBE wrench made by Hinsdale, ca. 1933-34. Now I just need an X20 to complete the shorty set!

Is the excitement about CF because these are the first Craftsman forged sockets, had short production run, and are thus rare?
Who was the manufacturer? Billings & Spencer? Herbrand? New Britain?

The "C-Series" or "C-**" series were the first time the Craftsman brand offered a comprehensive tool set.

The ratchets in this family were absolutely made by Snap On. The relationship between Snap On and Sears got ugly almost out of the gate.

I thought Twersty had a good thread about the other tools in the set being made by another tool company...

Here is my Snap-on 3/8” drive extension from 1932. It doesn’t look to me like they were the manufacturer of my Craftsman CF extension pictured.

I agree Don. The extension looks more Plomb empire to me. The way the shape tapers down the length. Maybe we should do a study on it. If you want to grab the major dimensions with a caliper I can do the same on some of my extensions.

Roy,
Sorry, but I won’t be where those extensions are for a few months. I found the Snap-on pictures in with my shots from 2018.

I picked up this Long C set the other day, complete with Craftsman marked parts except one tap has been replaced.

bmw, how does the die stock work? I see the insert dies on the right hand side, but only pairs. Usually, there are four cutters per size. Do you flip the die stock over to use the square (Reed type) dies? The label lists five sizes, and there are only four slots for each type of die.

Those aren't Reed-type dies. They are just screw plates. They don't cut. You slip the two cutting dies in to the stock from the back side, and you screw that plate into the die stock behind them to seat them firmly in place. The set screws on the sides of the stock then secure them.

As for the case not having enough slots, one set of dies and one screw plate (not visible in the photo) stays in the die stock.

I have a similar set (No. 5498) with a second die stock. (The strange thing about these sets are that the inside label and the pieces have plain humdrum markings. The only Long C is on the outside lid decal.)

Took some pics for you, Jock.

EDIT: The slots for the dies in the stock are beveled, as are the dies. If you're wondering why they don't just pass right through.

I knew about leaving one set in the stock, but I didn't know that the square "dies" were guide plates. Interesting design. Who do you think was the supplier?

Thanks to Saturday’s visit to the Tool Barn in Hulls Cove, Maine, I finally filled the empty 3/4” slot in my combo box. While I was at it, I swapped out a 11/16” Cman Vanadium for a plain underline. (So now, I’ll have to hunt for a plain 5/8” to replace the Vanadium that’s still in there!)
Sunday, at the related Liberty Tool Co in Liberty ME, spotted this small jointer.

My 4oz ball peen hammer with copper neck protection.

macgee: I have hammer envy...

Dug this out for pictures. Drill press hold-down box is appropriate, but the hold-down itself is not marked at all. Am I wrong in thinking the gold would have been a later color?

Picked up the saw a couple weeks ago at an estate sale. Looks to be in ok shape, and is sharper than any other hand saw I own (time to break out the files for a sharpening session :Twitch:).

Mac, did you do that copper wrap, or find it like that? I kind of like that...

Worth a re-post in the hammer thread!

50 years of what? Sears started in 1886, and Craftsman in the 30's? (30 or 31? some debate on exactly when...)

Smokes...57 would be the 30 year anniversary of the 27 name purchase. I've heard a lot of lore about the power bronze color but I've never seen anything in print from Sears. I did a cursory look through the catalogs (skimming) and can't really find anything. Do you know of any literature saying what the power bronze was all about?

Even assuming they actually started in '27 (I've seen nothing documented that early)

57-27 = 30 (Three Zero, Not fifty...) :see:

I found quite a few long C tools at the flea on Saturday. All of the sockets are BE, I believe. The 3/8” drive circle H flex handle cleaned up pretty well.

Re: The 1927 start date. These are clips from the 1927 Hardware and Cutlery catalog. The name "Craftsman" always appears in quotation marks and looks to be primarily limited to cutting tools (axes, taps and dies, hand planes) and hammers. Socket sets are still Hinsdale. The brand Craftsman stays in quotation marks until 1929, almost as if they were trying it on for size. In 1930 they drop the quotation marks.

Nice ratchet Leviton and welcome to GJ!

Lightning struck twice in two days. I was lucky enough to snag two Long C top chests, one from 39-40 and the other from 41-44. I always thought they were the same box with different logos but there's actually quite a few differences, most notably that the newer one has drawer slides and the other does not. I now recall someone mentioning that in here before but it had slipped my mind. Both boxes in good shape with original locks. The older one has both original keys.

I recently acquired this Craftsman C-97 1/2" drive ratchet from D42jeep to go along with the rest of my Craftsman C-series tools.

Also of interest is the two styles of C-93 breaker bars. The top one came with the socket set and the one below it came from Smokeshow a couple years ago. Do I guess correctly when I say those are the result of a patent lawsuit between Snap-on and Plomb?

The ratchet makes the rest of the set look like ****. Now I need to upgrade ...
