I pulled these (see Pic 1, excuse the Plomb rat) out of a stuffed Craftsman socket set box this morning at the flea. It was a "Crowntop" box and everything else was chromed with "Crowntop" era 3/8-inch drive tools with =V= or =V- markings. The extension (which looks to have been used as a drift or drive pin, unfortunately) and the hinge handle are both Circle-H (see Pic 2), but the hinge handle is =CRAFTSMAN= and the extension is Long C (see Pic 3).

The hinge handle is from the end of the NB run for Sears Lugz. Not sure when exactly they went to the =CRAFTSMAN= script but I've never seen it on any BE tools. I've got a 1/2d set with a case that's all the same, later script but for 2 or 3 sockets which are Long C. I'd guess they kept throwing the Long C stuff in sets till they ran out.

OTG, you're correct that some of the very early stuff didn't have the Long C either. The very first BE stuff had regular CRAFTSMAN script on them, without the "=" on both sides.

That is an exceptional pre-war set, and very difficult to find complete in that condition. It took me 3 years to complete my own and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it right now for the asking price. It would easily bring in excess of $200 on eBay. If someone tried talking me down in price for that set, I'd be temperamental, too!

I offer a closer look now that I have this set home. interesting the set on Ebay last night seemed to have the sockets ascending R to L, rather than the L to R here. Also an unmentioned 8th socket. Did anyone here buy that set? I'd be curious to see if that extra socket is in fact also a Long C....

This set. Box exterior is a nice shade of "total surface rust brown" Set is used and needs cleaning on the inside of the sockets and a good polish on the chrome, and they should look like a million bucks.

Interesting little nugget found in the box, a 1930s? Bonney Plug ratchet 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor.

I was outbid, though I didn't want to bid too high since I only wanted a couple items to upgrade my existing set.

As for sockets, there were other sizes that didn't come in this set - which stops at 1-5/8". Sears sold sockets that went to 2" at this time, and I am missing 2 of them.

I saw the drive plug, BTW. Throw it on eBay for $20-$30 and it will sell

I bought this perfect handle Dunlap screwdriver off of an eBay seller recently. I thought that it might be in the ‘42 Sears catalog but no dice. If one of you guys with the catalog CDs gets a chance, could you check to see if you can find a listing for it between ‘38 and ‘42? Thanks in advance.

1940 Spring and Summer Don. The clip may be difficult to read so they were available in 4, 6, 8 and 10 inch. Nice find. Now you've got to find the rest of them!EDIT: 39 and 40 are the only years I see them.

Hey, the BM variant! Those aren't easy to come by! I'd say you did pretty well for that price point! Very cool!

For every 10 Circle K, I'm lucky to find 1 BM. -_-

One thing about being a Craftsman collector is that Sears deprived us of tool boards. I find that a lot of my collection languishes away inside tool boxes. I've been taking some time to get better at displaying some of this stuff so I can enjoy it when I walk into my shop. I just finished my first Craftsman tool board for my collection of pre-war vanadium wrenches. I experimented around with doing the tool outlines but I wasn't satisfied with the results so I pulled the red pillow on that idea. Still trying to come up with a way of marking sizes that doesn't look like a 3d grade art project. There are 3 non-vanadiums in here that need to be swapped out when I find the older wrenches and the 8 inch adjustable is a place holder from a newer era. Kudos to my wife for her excellent work on the stencils. Next up, a smaller board to hold a 6pc set of early 1930s DOEs.

Just wow. That board looks original and perfect.
Well done.
Not sure what sizes you are missing but I did pick up a big craftsman DBE Vandium 1-1/16" X 1-1/8" if you need it. There was also a few other vanadium DBEs.

Terrific work! You'd never have convinced me that those weren't some original issue displays. Was the misspelling down below an inside joke?

Thanks gents. Apparently not enough attention to detail as "Craftsman" is indeed mispelled at the bottom. Holy s#%t!!! That'll be corrected tonight. Thanks oob!

I chopped off peg board hooks for the wrench holders. Hit them with a wire wheel to remove what I presume was zinc plating then soaked them in vinegar to age them. Epoxied them into the holes.

r_olsen, thanks. I'd like to see a pic of what you've got when you have the time. No rush. Some of these offset DBEs are in pretty rough shape as I have my nice ones in a cased set.

Damn...back to the stencil machine!

I both admire your work and hate you all at the same time[emoji23] I thought I had my last bit of wall space planned out for a few more Proto empire took boards I need to make but now I really feel the need to make these. Very well done sir! Will you be selling these as well?

Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

Way too many man hours in this for me to sell them, I'd be in hole and shipping would ****.

Thanks OTG!

I totally understand that. I probably have 10 hours into each tool board I have made and I have made 9 so far[emoji15] I really like how you stripped and weathered the hardware! What are the dimensions on these boards ? Also in terms of size marking, maybe type the sizes on white paper with an old typewriter font? They wouldn’t have to be super big

Great job!!! If I saw that at an estate sale or flea market etc, I would have thought it to be a CM original from the day.

Thanks PF, Brian and Provincial.

Ben, this measures 34x48. In hindsight I would have broken them down to two smaller boards. I plan on making a two board set for the non-Vanadium stuff and using reverse colors.

Thanks for the dimensions! I was thinking if I make some for me that I would make them smaller so they could be moved around if I wanted

Sadly no prom queens at this auction. It was definitely a quantity vs quality style. Anywho here the 2. The 1-1/4" X 1-1/16" I bet is a hard find.IMG_20200831_203239468.jpegIMG_20200831_203241590.jpegIMG_20200831_203247866.jpg

Yes, I believe that big boy is not super easy to find?? I find it interesting how heavy duty the construction of it is when compared to just a few sizes down. I had the opportunity to view the full array laid out in a rare Metal carry box I found Riley on eBay! Now I want to find the full run of wrenches to display on my wall. Thanks a lot jocosawdust [emoji23][emoji23][emoji106]

Thanks Shelby. For the record, the misspelling has been corrected and I spelt it gooder this time.

r_olsen. Yup, that wrench was the largest available. I have a few of them, mostly later non-vanadiums but they show their heads less often than some of the smaller sizes. Thanks for the pics. Those have seen better days so I'll keep hunting but thanks for taking the time to show them.

Bottom line up front: When did New Britain start using the Circle H stamp?

Smokeshow recently posted that he was looking for a 1/2" speeder with the rotating forehand grip on it to replace one without the forehand grip in a post war 1/2d set. That got me thinking and rooting through my assorted 1/2d speeders.

I had to go back to the 1934 catalog to find an illustration of a 1/2d speeder without the rotating forehandle. I've got both with and without in both H and BE. I've always assumed that BE came first (and I think this is correct as the earliest NB drive tools and sockets are all marked BE) and that there was a period of time when NB was using both stamps. I also believe that at some point, BE went away and the dying breath of the NB Sears tools were all marked H. I've never seen a BE marked piece with the =CRAFTSMAN= logo on it. Only H.

I recall reading a post from Twertsey here in Vintage Tools detailing the demise of the Husky plant but I can't find it. As I remember it, Todd dispelled the myth that Circle H tools were made in the Kenosha plant as the plant was abandoned and all the tooling moved to CT when NB bought it out (1931-ish??). Am I dreaming that? If not can somebody point me in the right direction to find that conversation?

I might be overthinking this but my thoughts are that NB started using the Circle H stamp once they moved the Husky tooling from WI to CT and used it to designate tools made on the former Husky machinery. Forgive me if this horse has already been beaten.

Thanks Smokeshow! I just looked at 15 pre-war 1/2d speeders!!!!

Both of the pictured speeders are Circle H.
