Also a couple extra photos of the 1935 ignition set. Underneath the cardboard is about the cleanest 1930s era Craftsman toolbox paint you'll ever see, which I was surprised to see is actually pretty glossy. The cardboard is locked in fairly solid so it remained protected behind the insert for all these years.

^ who do you suppose stamped out those pliers and wrenches for Sears?
I believe the consensus is vlcheck ?
think aa has a vlchek ignition wrench that matches them
Here's what AA has. I'd say that's a pretty close match. Vlcheck was doing a bit more with Craftsman in the mid 30s as well, so the era fits too.
They're definitely Vlchek. I have posted mine before.

The 39 tool cart disassembled for cleaning. All I wanted to do was pull the drawer out (no drawer slides) but by design, you've got to remove the top of the cart to get the drawer out. I figured I may as well go all in to do a deep clean. There's some fantastic samples of unmolested prewar paint on this thing. I'm convinced the "crystalline finish" is not a result of a chemical reaction but rather some sort of media added to the paint to provide the texture. I plan on coating the pieces with BLO prior to reassembly. tempImageVS6pRE.png
When this is completed, curious minds would love to see this cart reassemlbed and posted :) It's too uncommon to not show it off.

I can see why you suspect wilde. Here is one of the longer ones with a wilde

Yup, the resemblance is unmistakable! We know that wilde was making tools for them at this time so it’s not much of a jump to say that based on physical characteristics that Wilde is a safe bet 👍. Nice wrenches

It honestly doesn't look much different than before I tore it down but hopefully the rust is abated and the thing will last another 84 years. I put two coats of "Sweet Patina", a BLO-based product recommended to me by Smokes. The top (which I already had, the top that came with the cart is sitting empty looking for a job) houses the '39 Master Service Set while the cart itself houses Vanadium and C-series sets. I'm really happy to add this to the collection. IMG_5431.jpegIMG_5435.jpeg

Wow, remnants of the original blue - enough for a color match shift?
When I did my color match, they put something the size of a small toolbox, with a 2x2 viewing window in the front center, onto my pieces. I wanted a shot of the bottom of a 1/4” box, and they could not do it.

That inside corner of the vise would be very hard for them.

I have mostly decided on the blue you see in the color square here. I show it next to the vise as it is today and also next to some of the same Craftsman (or Reedsman 😎) vises I found on the internet. The series of vises shown here sideways belong to another GJ member.
It is obviously not critical that I exactly match the original factory color. Even if somebody could, how do we know that the color seen here hasn’t changed since it left the factory maybe 80 years ago?

This is what I'm currently using as my pre-war blue go-to. The gals at Sherwin Williams scanned the pulley cover of a little Dunlap-branded Mohawk drill press. That pulley cover is plastic with a molded in color.

One thing to keep in mind is that the various OEMs manufacturing items for Sears used different shades of blue. The blue Walker Turner used was much darker than the blue Atlas used. Parker used a really bright blue.

JoCo:
Thanks for the color reference. I loaded Dignity Blue from SW and put it on the screen with those vises and my 5128. I can’t debate on color too much or it will make me crazy.

Sorry if you took offense, lcooley. I was joking about the fact that it seems they hired blind people with vertigo to apply their decals, as they never seem to be straight during this era.

Edit: Glad to hear you took it in the spirit I meant. Sometimes tone is hard to tell on the internet.

Those "straight label" issues were endemic with multiple companies and multiple MFG verticals. Most older Coleman lanterns also have crooked labels from the factory, and we make the same jokes about the Coleman workers!
