From my experience brake parts cleaner seems to attach grease better than engine degreeser.

Yes, correct. If they are very dirty - I use the engine degreaser and then rinse it. Then I place the socket on an extension and hit it with the bench grinder. Then use the small brush inside the socket and then soak with brake cleaner. Then I wipe them down with a rag soaked in rust penetrant.

Looks good. I’ve wondered what is a good way to clean nasty sockets.

I degrease with paint thinner/mineral spirits (because I have it available). I find it will get the grime off with minimal effort, and by letting it settle, and pouring off the clearer top into a second container, it’s good for multiple soaks. I keep it in a wide-mouth jar (not glass) with a tight-sealing lid: the sockets pop right in there.
For rust, my weapons of choice are a regular screwdriver, then a $2 HF battery brush for the inside. If necessary, a dental pick can get into corners. The outside can involve a screwdriver and a wide HDX stainless utility brush from the paint aisle of Home Depot. I think Lowes and Walmart have similar brushes.

Evaporust has been my best friend, especially when it comes time to clean sockets. It’s saved me many hours of time and a lot of backache.

I used it for the first time ever the other day on super rusty metal box and was stunned by how well it did it’s job! This is the after. I failed to photo the before. It looked like wall to wall rust carpet. IMG_6561.jpg

picked up this dp vise recently, appears barely used. It has a heritage logo and the longC stamping.

Not a purchase; just a sighting. With my current shoulder pain, even if this heavy worm-driven works, I wouldn’t be the one running it.

A big (1-1/16x1-1/4) DBE today. Would have been more, but a younger quicker guy got to them before me.
Not sure about the logo on the pruners...?

These two Craftsman Vanadium combo wrenches came home to me today. They both have the letters "AF" stamped on them, just like some of the DBE wrenches I own from that era.

Has anyone identified the markings? Do they identify a manufacturer?

Brian

I might have a problem. I'm running out of room for long-c tools in my long-c cabinet! What? You thought I was going to say I have too many tools?!? Never!

I already posted this at the end of my Union-supplied Craftsman machinists chest thread, but I thought I would post it here, too. I didn't buy this (more than I wanted to spend...), but the badge is so cool, I just had to snap a photo and post it here.

One more combo for my box. All the rest are CI, but this one is AF.
Also, I wondered about the logo and grip pattern on these pliers -Heritage?

Picked up a miter for my 16" WT/Craftsman band saw today.

WT/Craftsman geared miter gauge.
17" x 7", nice heavy knurled knobs.3eb2a1062747ca71d371ec4d7e6dd3a0.jpg9809db1e503b0cd79c2318169476d4b1.jpg2e2a1f2a043b87f59b2232bdabe792a3.jpg

From 1935 catalog. Not sure what you use them for... probably why they are always missing.

Just to make all the Craftsman people sweat...

Has all the original parts, still attached with twist ties, the original instructions and extra blades, in a marked holder, are underneath the red cardboard.

I've had a bug in my ear about craftsman long C tools since I found out I owned two chests ( well, a chest and a half; someone beheaded the one). Ironically, I had a 1/2" ratchet and breaker bar for years until someone stole my tool box out of my truck.
I just finished cleaning the rust off of this 1/2" drive set.

30519317817_5b741e882f_c.jpg

It's fairly complete, having retained the T handle for the breaker bar ( which has gone missing), the non- reversing ratchet, speeder and two extensions,

44734500234_eee4fa9811_c.jpg

I'm quite pleased with it, but I'd be just a little happier if it matched; most of my long c items are BE ( the new set is circle H).

The rest of my collection resides in this 1/2" socket set case,
30519315757_9d4c7e6c16_c.jpg

I'm slowly exchanging my scattershot tool collection with as many long C tools as possible ( wrenches and deep sockets have proven difficult to find). I would dearly love to find a roller for the chests to sit on ( the one they are on now is, I think, a Duplex). It's funny- my grandfather loved Craftsman tools, and my grandmother bought him some every Christmas for nearly fifty years, but everything was sold after he died ( an act my grandmother regretted later when I became a mechanic). I can't help looking at the growing collection and reflecting on how many swing shifts at the Timken company the old man worked to have tools like this.

sorry to hear about that James. My family sold off all my grandfathers tools and 1950's craftsman vise after he passed away... finding this place, has made me search high and low for the same vise he had... after 2-1/2 years of looking I finally found one that was affordable....

Here is something unique.... I grew up in wooster and work for a contractor company in Akron (tallmadge). in my quest for vise collecting/searching/buying/selling I ran across this monster from the Timken Roller Bearing Plant. the Vise is dated 4/67'. its very possible your dad used or laid hands on this...

Small world, You're the second NE Ohioan I've talked to today On GJ. I have machines and tools from the Hoover company, Babcock-Wilcox, and others, but I don't think I've ever run across a Timken badged machine.I do have the official certificate Timken gave my grandfather when he retired hanging in my shop, along with a photo of him at the cut off machine he operated for forty-one years.
On the subject of long C tools, I just realized I have another,

45431095232_1dfbd58a4e_z.jpg

I love these diagonal cutters; they're comfortable, sharp and still snug at the joint.
I guess I need to find them some friends...

Rileysan, could you post the instructions that came with the Craftsman Roto-Saw? I actually have one. I just didn’t know what it was called.

When I spotted these today under a layer of teal green paint and rust, for $2, I had to have them. No model# on them, but the distinctive grip pattern jumped out at me. Cleaned up real good. Not sure of the era, though?

Very nice, LS. Classic nested diamond pattern grips. That marking, with the "=U.S.A.=" under the non-geometric "CRAFTSMAN" (but reminiscent of the "=CRAFTSMAN=" marking itself in the same Heritage era), is identical to a marking on a drawing of a pair of generic pliers on page 20 of the 1952 catalog used to describe features common to all Craftsman pliers on the page. The reason I know this is because I have a pair of battery pliers with the same marking. It may be earlier, but it's not shown in the 1948 catalog, and it's not earlier than that, backing into Long C then.
